Researcher in Nuclear Safeguards
Would you like to work with applied nuclear physics, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Would you like an employer that invests in sustainable employee relations and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a position as a researcher at Uppsala University. At the Department of Applied Nuclear Physics, research is conducted in technical nuclear safeguards, with a focus on developing technical means to ensure that sensitive materials are not used in unauthorized ways. The department conducts research on, for example, improvement and development of instrumentation, measurement techniques and analysis techniques for verification of spent nuclear fuel, but also to strengthen nuclear safeguards for future nuclear power systems. The research is motivated by both needs and requests from national and international regulatory authorities and national and international collaborations. The research work will be carried out within a research group that conducts several different projects related to nuclear energy systems. In all of them, monitoring and verification of nuclear material for safeguards purposes is in focus. Part of the activities is linked to verification of spent nuclear fuel from today's nuclear power, and we especially see that verification of non-regular fuels will be in focus in the coming years. Furthermore, we see connections to verification of fuel from light water cooled small modular reactors (SMRs) within the framework of the nuclear competence center ANItA, an academic-industrial nuclear technology initiative aimed at achieving future sustainable energy supply with the help of small modular reactors. Another part of the activities includes interdisciplinary research where nuclear safeguards and nuclear security around transportable nuclear power systems at sea are in focus. Plans exist to expand this activity, especially within selected Generation IV systems such as molten salt reactors, and in such a constellation the researcher will have a given place. Research on land-based such systems will also be included in the position. It is desirable that the researcher has own ideas and sees opportunities to develop the activities in a complementary manner. Duties The duties aim to develop and strengthen methods for monitoring and verification of nuclear material in both land-based and maritime systems. The duties include modeling of source terms, radiation transport and detection; fuel characterization and fuel analysis; and analysis of proliferation risks and verification of nuclear material in existing and future nuclear energy systems. Analysis of gamma and neutron radiation from nuclear fuel will be included, as well as modeling of radiation detection. It is also part of the duties to apply for funds, and contribute to the group's other applications for funding, to conduct research in the field. Practical work in the form of measurements and analysis of measurement data may also be included. The teaching duties include teaching at various levels (undergraduate, advanced level and commissioned education). Course responsibility may be included, as well as supervision of both undergraduate students and doctoral students. The department-wide tasks may, depending on interest, include responsibility for local infrastructure such as computing clusters, educational matters, third mission activities, etc. Qualification Requirements Requirements for employment are: Doctoral degree in physics, with a focus on nuclear physics or nuclear technology Excellent ability to communicate research results both orally and in writing in English Excellent ability to collaborate in and contribute to both small and large groups Desirable/Merits Desirable qualities are: Documented good knowledge and experience in the research field of nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation for both existing and future nuclear power systems on land and at sea (light water reactor systems, SMRs, Generation IV systems, etc.) Good experience with modeling and simulation of nuclear material, such as irradiated nuclear fuel, for example using Serpent and MCNP Experience with data analysis, preferably with Python Experience working with equipment and detectors for measurement and quantification of ionizing radiation Experience with programming in Python, Matlab, C/C++ and SCALE Experience with national and international collaborations About the Position The employment is fixed-term, 12 months. Postdoctoral Researcher in Chromatin Dynamics at Extreme Desiccation Tolerance
Department of Plant Biology About the Position We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our research group at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala to investigate how plant cells reorganize their cell nuclei and gene regulatory systems to survive extreme environmental conditions. Certain organisms can survive the loss of nearly all cellular water by entering a state of suspended animation, known as anhydrobiosis. Orthodox plant seeds and so-called resurrection plants—plants with extreme desiccation tolerance—are remarkable examples: differentiated vegetative cells can tolerate severe drying and subsequently resume normal growth after rehydration. How a differentiated cell can undergo such an extreme physiological transition while preserving genome integrity, cellular identity, and the ability to reactivate gene expression remains not fully understood. The project will investigate changes in chromatin and transcription in connection with the transition to the desiccated state and recovery from it, using plants with extreme desiccation tolerance and possibly complementary plant systems. We are particularly interested in understanding whether desiccation is accompanied by the establishment of a specialized and reversible chromatin state, how this state contributes to protecting the genome and halting transcription, and how normal organization of the cell nucleus and normal gene expression are restored after rehydration. This position is affiliated with the research group led by Dr Stefanie Rosa at the Department of Plant Biology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala. Our group studies how the organization and dynamics of chromatin affect the regulation and stability of plant genomes (https://www.slu.se/en/profilepages/r/stefanie-rosa/). The project offers great freedom to develop a new research direction at the intersection of chromatin biology, transcription, cell biology, and extreme stress tolerance. The successful candidate will have access to advanced microscopy infrastructure at Uppsala BioCenter and work in a collaborative research environment encompassing plant cell biology, genetics, genomics, and developmental biology. Your Background We are seeking a creative and highly motivated researcher with a PhD in plant biology, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, genomics, or a related field. Previous experience with molecular biological methods, cell biology, and plant developmental biology is advantageous. Strong ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is required. You should also have the ability to conduct independent research, take initiative, formulate relevant scientific questions, and collaborate with other researchers. The position is intended for a junior researcher, and we are primarily seeking individuals who completed their PhD no more than three years ago. If there are special circumstances, the PhD may have been completed earlier. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, military service, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or practice/positions relevant to the field. About Us The Department's research is primarily focused on plants, but other organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, insects, yeast cells, and even human cells are also studied. Our main research areas include interactions between plants and microorganisms and other forms of stress; biotechnology and metabolic engineering; plant growth and development; regulation of gene expression; population genetics, genome analysis, and development of plant breeding systems. The organisms used include model organisms such as Arabidopsis thaliana, Physcomitrella, tobacco, and yeast, as well as crops such as rapeseed, short-rotation willow (Salix), potato, barley, rye, wheat, and cassava. The Department is responsible for basic and advanced courses in general and molecular genetics, genetic engineering, cell biology, plant physiology, gene expression, plant breeding, plant biochemistry, and biotechnology, as well as molecular interactions between plants and pathogens. Additionally, the Department participates in several other biology courses together with other departments. The courses are part of master's programs in biotechnology and natural resources and in educational programs for students in agronomy and landscape architecture, but most courses are also open to external students. You work independently as a speech-language pathologist but also become part of a skilled group of speech-language pathologists who support and help each other in daily work. We strive for care, security, and job satisfaction to characterize our days both in patient meetings and among colleagues. Your Assignment You will work as a speech-language pathologist at the Speech-Language Pathology Clinic, Akademiska sjukhuset. The position is placed within outpatient/clinic work but consultative work may also be included. As a clinic speech-language pathologist, you see patients in outpatient care, while as a consultant speech-language pathologist you see hospitalized patients throughout the hospital. If you have FUS competency, this will be valuable in the operation! The introduction will be adapted to your circumstances. Akademiska sjukhuset is a university hospital with the mission to conduct healthcare and research. You have the opportunity to be part of developing care for our patients, for example by participating in development projects. An individual competency plan is created annually where both individual knowledge development and the direction of the operation are in focus. Knowledge development also occurs through professional meetings, networks, and interprofessional meetings. Participating in and sharing knowledge, experience, and discussions among colleagues is an important part of our daily work. We collaborate with the Speech-Language Pathology Program at Uppsala University and speech-language pathology students conduct their practice-based education with us on an annual basis. Your Qualifications We are looking for you who are a licensed speech-language pathologist. We would appreciate it if you have experience in neurospeech pathology, but we also welcome you who are newly graduated or new to the neuro field. You believe that professional and friendly conduct, perhaps with a touch of humor, is a valuable tool for creating good relationships with patients and colleagues. You are an engaged and positive colleague who wants to be involved in and develop the operation and who easily collaborates. We believe you thrive when the work pace is occasionally high and that you have the ability to work independently, prioritize, and create structure among your various tasks. Since Akademiska sjukhuset has close collaboration with the university, we would appreciate it if you are interested in following, developing, and participating in the latest research. Experience with instrumental swallowing assessment and mentor experience are merits. We Offer We offer a fixed-term position at 100% until 2027-08-29.
