Read more about us here Project Description Studies and exploration of two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), have received significant attention over the past decades for their applications in optoelectronics. Despite this interest, the photophysical properties of these materials and the physics of defects in these materials, introduced via various exfoliation methods, are not well understood. The overall goal of this project is to deepen fundamental understanding of defect-related physics and provide new insights into the hotly debated topic of 2D material defect passivation, by for the first time utilizing advanced vibrational spectroscopies, time-resolved optical spectroscopy, and microscopy. Responsibilities Being a doctoral student means independently driving projects within a specific doctoral research subject. You collaborate continuously with other doctoral students and researchers to jointly produce results within various projects and have one or more supervisors to support you during your doctoral studies. However, you work largely independently, for example, through work in a laboratory environment and writing articles for journals and results for your doctoral thesis. This question has important implications for our ability to predict genetic responses to changing environments. This project aims to integrate mechanistic insights about phenotypic adaptation with genomic data to understand how species develop adaptations to changes in their living environment. The project will utilize data from a large-scale Evolve-and-Resequence experiment on a widespread pest insect, the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus. This unique system enables studies of the role of determinism and chance in local adaptation and the evolution of a species' ecological niche. Phenotypic data, RNA-seq, and DNA pool-seq data are available from multiple time points in the ongoing experiment. The Berger group also maintains several other geographic populations of C. maculatus as well as closely related seed beetle species. This provides opportunities for comparative genomics and additional experiments and data collection. Main Duties: The PhD project will involve a combination of experimental laboratory work and bioinformatic analysis, with emphasis on the latter. The exact distribution between tasks may depend on the candidate's interests and project development. The PhD student will be employed by the Department of Law and admitted to doctoral studies leading to a Doctor of Laws degree. Research Topic The goal of achieving a climate-neutral society has sparked renewed interest in nuclear power throughout Europe, making the legal regulation of licensing processes for new nuclear power a highly relevant research area. As the European Union implements the objectives of the European Green Deal and strengthens its climate and energy policy instruments, nuclear power emerges as an important component of the transition to a low-carbon energy system. Under certain conditions, nuclear power-related activities have also been recognized in the EU's taxonomy for sustainable finance as contributing to the transition toward a climate-neutral economy. This development has intensified discussions about how licensing processes can facilitate investments in new nuclear power while maintaining high levels of environmental protection, radiation safety, public participation, and legal certainty. Against this background, licensing for new nuclear power remains one of the legally most complex regulatory processes in Sweden, as in many comparable jurisdictions. Multiple authorities have overlapping competencies under environmental, nuclear safety, radiation protection, and planning legislation, while international and EU law impose additional procedural and substantive requirements. The interplay between these legal frameworks creates significant challenges regarding coordination, predictability, and legitimacy. The doctoral project will examine how Swedish, EU, and international law shape the legal framework for licensing new nuclear power. The aim is to develop a comprehensive legal understanding of how complex licensing processes are designed and coordinated, and how regulation of institutional responsibility, procedural order, and decision-making affect efficiency, legal certainty, and legitimacy. A comparative perspective will be central to the research. The project is expected to analyze selected jurisdictions that are currently reviewing or reforming their nuclear power licensing processes. Responsibilities We are seeking a motivated and ambitious PhD student for theoretical studies of ion transport in solid battery materials. The project aims to deepen the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms governing ion transport in solid polymer electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries. The research will focus on developing new and computationally efficient multiscale modeling strategies, enabling systematic studies of ion conductivity in complex battery materials at large scales. Model-generated data will be used to identify important relationships between material structure and ion conductivity using advanced data analysis and machine learning methods. The expected scientific outcome is to provide guidelines for identifying and optimizing promising electrolyte materials and to contribute to the development of future battery technologies. Duties Assisted reproduction (IVF) is associated with an increased risk of blood clots during early pregnancy, but the mechanisms behind this remain unclear and there are no laboratory methods to assess risk in individual patients. Extracellular vesicles (EV) are nano-sized particles released from body cells, carry procoagulant properties, and participate in reproductive signaling. They may therefore be the missing link between reproduction and hemostasis in current understanding. The project examines how EVs change during IVF treatment, their relationship to hemostatic activation and clinical outcomes, and whether they can be used as biomarkers. Analyses are performed using existing longitudinal biobank material and in a prospective cohort. The PhD student will be part of the national research school BioLabX (Biomedical Analysts for Excellence), which educates future teachers and researchers in healthcare and medical science. The work is primarily laboratory-based and builds on immunological methods and high-sensitivity flow cytometry for characterization of extracellular vesicles at the individual vesicle level. The work includes handling of clinical samples from biobank and prospective collection, setup and validation of antibody panels, analytical quality assurance, and integration of EV data with hemostasis measurements and clinical outcome data. Department of Energy and Technology Doctoral Research Subject: Technology Description of the Doctoral Project: We are seeking a motivated PhD student to develop knowledge about how production systems for fast-growing hardwood trees should be modified to better adapt to a future where both the risk of and effects of unexpected events – as well as their negative consequences – increase. The work focuses on the climate impact of these unexpected events. The project is part of the activities at the competence center Trees for Me. Changes in the external environment linked to the consequences of climate change and political instability have become increasingly clear and evident in recent years. For example, the extent of forest fires, storms, and insect attacks has increased, and the consequences for forests have in some cases been catastrophic. However, there are measures that can reduce the risk of, and/or the effects of, most of these events; examples of such measures include changes in tree species selection and forest management strategies. Measures to reduce the occurrence and effects of unexpected, undesired events typically involve increased costs and/or reduced revenues in the short term. They also affect the system's overall climate impact. Converting forest management to completely eliminate the effects of all conceivable disturbances is not feasible; measures must instead be weighed against the risk of a disturbance occurring and the potential damage such an event could cause. Trees for Me is a competence center focused on fast-growing hardwood trees – such as poplar, aspen, hybrid aspen, and birch – for sustainable forests, materials, and energy. Around 20 partner organizations from academia, research institutes, industry, and the public sector collaborate within the center. The goal is to develop scientifically grounded, innovative solutions for – and build future competence in – a new and resilient system for supplying forest biomass, intended for processing into high-value material and energy products. In the second phase of Trees for Me, approximately ten new PhD students and postdoctoral researchers are now to be recruited. Department of Plant Production Ecology Doctoral Field: Biology with specialization in Ecology. Description of the PhD Project: Crop production faces increasingly significant challenges due to multiple interacting stress factors, including drought, heat, limited nutrient availability, weeds, pests, and diseases. Genetic diversity in crops can strengthen resilience under such conditions, but how this resilience is expressed depends heavily on environment, cultivation techniques, and management. Cultivation methods using cover crops or undersown intercropping can contribute to sustainability by providing valuable ecosystem services such as regulation of weeds, pests, and diseases, nitrogen fixation, and preservation of soil health and fertility. However, there is still limited knowledge about how genetic diversity in crops and cover crops or undersown intercropping interact to reduce the effects of multiple stress factors, which represents an important knowledge gap that this project aims to fill. The project will investigate how different cultivation methods affect the resilience of main crops, particularly wheat and peas, against multiple stress factors. You will study how different cultivation methods affect the response of various varieties or genotypes under varying growing conditions, with particular focus on the interaction between variety/genotype, environment, and cultivation method. The goal is to increase understanding of how cultivation methods affect different crop genotypes' resilience to multiple stress factors and to identify promising combinations of varieties/genotypes and cultivation methods that can contribute to stable yields and good productivity under low-input growing conditions. Field experiments will be conducted comparing different cultivation methods. Field measurements will include crop development, phenology, yield, and quality characteristics, as well as documentation of a broad spectrum of abiotic and biotic stress factors such as drought, heat stress, nutrient deficiency, and occurrence of weeds, pests, and plant diseases. Service crops, used as an agroecological management practice, can provide valuable ecosystem services, such as the regulation of weeds, pests, and diseases, as well as nitrogen fixation and the maintenance of soil health and fertility. However, there is still limited understanding of how crop genetic diversity and service crops interact to alleviate multiple stresses - an important knowledge gap that this project will address. The project will investigate how agroecological management practices influence resilience to multiple stresses in wheat and pea. You will examine how management practices modify genotype responses across growing conditions, with a particular focus on interactions between genotype, environment, and management. The aim is to understand how management practices shape resilience to multiple stresses in different crop genotypes and to identify promising variety–management combinations that support stable performance under low-input conditions. Experiments will be conducted under field conditions, comparing different agroecological management practices. Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) Third-cycle subject area Biology Assessing and Prioritization of Coastal Marine Restoration Measures There is an urgent need for restoration in coastal and marine areas. The restoration challenge is complex, as many areas are affected by widescale pressures acting in concert with local impacts. To tackle this challenge, we need to understand how to combine ecological understanding with societal interactions at both local and larger spatial scales. The PhD position is in a project which will support effective strategic planning for coastal marine restoration by developing key performance indicators to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of coastal restoration measures in relation to ecological, social and economic sustainability aspects. The project team is transdisciplinary including scientists from the fields of ecology, sociology and economics. The results from the project will inform restoration measures at local and national scales. PhD Student in Biology, Environmental Science Focus
Department of Aquatic Resources Doctoral Field: Biology. Assessment and prioritization of marine and coastal restoration measures. There is an acute need for restoration in coastal and marine areas. The restoration challenge is complex, as many areas are affected by large-scale pressures that interact with local effects. To meet this challenge, we need to understand how ecological knowledge can be combined with societal processes, both at local and larger spatial scales. The doctoral position is part of a project that will support effective strategic planning for marine coastal restoration by developing key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of coastal restoration measures based on ecological, social, and economic sustainability aspects. The project group is interdisciplinary and includes researchers in ecology, sociology, and national economics. The project's results will form the basis for restoration measures at both local and national levels. Duties: The main task is to conduct doctoral research under supervision, which includes developing the doctoral student's methodological, theoretical, analytical, written, and oral presentation skills. The doctoral student will use a range of different methods, including stakeholder dialogues, geographic data analysis, and validation and testing of indicators in case studies. You will develop maps of natural values that contribute important knowledge for sustainable coastal planning and identify hotspots where restoration measures would provide the greatest cost-effectiveness in relation to ecological, social, and economic goals. Your work will contribute to increased knowledge about how spatially targeted measures and spatial optimization can affect the effectiveness of restoration efforts, as well as processes for integrating knowledge from multiple sources in management work. You will have close contact with officials from municipalities, regional authorities, and the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management. PhD Candidate in Core Optimization with Machine Learning

As a PhD candidate, you will be part of a research group working on reactor physics, fuel cycle analysis, and computational methods for core and fuel optimization. The group combines physics-based computational models with modern optimization and data analysis methods. The work environment is international and multidisciplinary, with close links between fundamental method development and technically relevant applications. The project is a continuation of an ongoing PhD project on core and fuel optimization for small modular reactors (SMR) within the competence center ANItA (Academic-industrial Nuclear technology Initiative to Achieve a sustainable energy future). The competence center brings together academia and industry to strengthen Swedish nuclear technology expertise and contribute to a sustainable energy transition. The previous PhD project has developed methods for optimizing equilibrium cycles, where the goal is to find recurring fuel management strategies that provide good fuel economy while meeting reactor physics safety margins. Special focus has been on combining advanced optimization algorithms with machine learning-based surrogate models, including graph-based representations of core loading patterns. You will further develop this research direction. The project may include cycle-to-cycle optimization, development of new machine learning models, improved optimization strategies, uncertainty quantification, more efficient handling of physical constraints, and expanded analysis of fuel design, loading patterns, and safety-related quantities. The goal is to develop methods that enable faster and more reliable exploration of large design spaces in core and fuel optimization. Duties The duties consist mainly of doctoral studies, where you conduct research within the project and complete courses as part of your doctoral education. The work involves developing, implementing, and evaluating computational methods for core and fuel optimization using machine learning and optimization algorithms. Your duties include: - Develop and apply machine learning-based surrogate models for reactor physics calculations, - Develop and evaluate optimization methods for fuel loading patterns and fuel composition, - Analyze safety-related parameters such as reactivity, power distributions, fuel utilization, and margins to technical limits, - Work with large datasets from reactor physics simulations, - Implement and document computational tools, for example in Python, - Compile and publish research results in scientific articles, - Present results at national and international conferences, - Participate in research group seminars, project meetings, and other scientific activities. Teaching and other institutional service may be included with a maximum of 20 percent of full-time work. Qualifications To be eligible for doctoral studies, you must have: - Completed an advanced degree in engineering physics, nuclear engineering, energy engineering, machine learning, computer science, applied mathematics, or another field relevant to the project, or - Completed at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level including an independent thesis of at least 15 credits, or - Acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.
