Admission to doctoral studies in the subject of Technical Physics with a focus on solid state physics. at the Department of Solid State Physics, Department of Materials Science, Uppsala University Read more about us here About the Department The Department of Solid State Physics is part of the Department of Materials Science at Ångström Laboratory. At the department, we conduct both fundamental and applied research. Read more about us here Project Description Studies and exploration of two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), have received significant attention over the past decades for their applications in optoelectronics. Despite this interest, the photophysical properties of these materials and the physics of defects in these materials, introduced via various exfoliation methods, are not well understood. The overall goal of this project is to deepen fundamental understanding of defect-related physics and provide new insights into the hotly debated topic of 2D material defect passivation, by for the first time utilizing advanced vibrational spectroscopies, time-resolved optical spectroscopy, and microscopy. Responsibilities Being a doctoral student means independently driving projects within a specific doctoral research subject. You collaborate continuously with other doctoral students and researchers to jointly produce results within various projects and have one or more supervisors to support you during your doctoral studies. However, you work largely independently, for example, through work in a laboratory environment and writing articles for journals and results for your doctoral thesis. Typically, some form of mid-term seminar is included after approximately half of the study period. When you are admitted to doctoral studies, you are offered employment as a doctoral student. Employment as a doctoral student at Uppsala University corresponds to full-time education at the doctoral level for four years. Read more about doctoral studies here You will be responsible for conducting advanced spectroscopic investigations of 2D quantum materials, such as Raman, photoluminescence (PL), transient absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray-based spectroscopies. You will design, perform, and analyze experiments aimed at understanding exciton dynamics and defect passivation mechanisms in 2D materials from various exfoliation methods. Additional responsibilities include writing scientific manuscripts, presenting research results at internal meetings and international conferences, and active participation in collaborative discussions within the research group. Eligibility Requirements Regulations for doctoral students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) Chapter 5, §§ 1-7, and in the university's rules and guidelines. Qualification Requirements Master's degree or Diploma in Engineering in Physics, Chemistry, or a related field, alternatively other education deemed equivalent to these qualifications. Completed relevant courses in solid state physics or physical chemistry. Good oral and written proficiency in English. Desirable/Meriting Qualifications Basic knowledge and skills in 2D material characterization are meriting. Experience with transient absorption spectroscopy is particularly meriting. Likewise, experience with programming in MATLAB, Python, or similar for data analysis is highly meriting. Great weight is placed on personal qualities such as the ability to independently plan and perform work. You have a good ability to work towards set goals and you work focused to achieve them. In this, you have an ability to focus, even during periods of high workload. You are communicative, and through this quality you work well with others. You also have a good ability to write academic text. Furthermore, you need to be organized and able to work efficiently both individually and in groups. Your application should contain: A brief letter (max 2 pages) in which you describe yourself, why you want to pursue a doctorate, and why you are particularly suited for this position. CV (max 2 pages) A certified copy of your master's degree/engineering diploma and your course grades. Copies (or drafts) of your advanced level thesis work and other documents, such as publications, that you wish to reference. Names and contact details of at least two contact persons who have agreed to serve as references for you, with any additional letters of recommendation. It should also be clear what relationship you have had with each referee. Applications should be written in English. We will review application materials on an ongoing basis and call for interviews. About the Position The position is fixed-term, according to HF Chapter 5, § 7. The position is full-time. Start date February 1, 2027, or by agreement.
