Are you passionate about research and model development? Do you want to be part of developing a European "foundation model" for the earth and atmosphere? Are you interested in geoscience and handling and extracting information from large and complex datasets? Then this could be the job for you. At SMHI, you can work in a highly skilled and international environment, where your expertise contributes to solutions for a more sustainable society. About the Meteorological Research Unit We are now seeking reinforcement for our meteorological research unit, which conducts research and development work in air environment, weather forecasts, climate analysis, and atmospheric processes. Daily work includes working with observation data, meteorological analyses, and developing models for regional weather forecasts in the Nordic region, as well as remote sensing, climate analysis, and air quality at urban to global scales. You can read more about the unit here: https://www.smhi.se/forskning/forskningsenheter/meteorologi About the Position We are seeking up to two postdoctoral researchers to strengthen our research activities in machine learning, with particular focus on generative AI and large-scale foundation models for the atmosphere and geosciences. The main work involves starting from a large-scale, pre-trained AI foundation model and adapting, expanding, and fine-tuning it for specific weather and climate-related applications. This includes integration of new, complex data sources (e.g., satellite and radar data) as well as development of dedicated models for specific forecasting purposes. Work is carried out in Unix/Linux environments on HPC clusters and in close collaboration with SMHI's other machine learning, remote sensing, and meteorology experts. The roles offer good opportunities for international collaboration, scientific publication, and specialization within a rapidly growing research field. Requirements: Very strong programming skills in Python and solid documented experience with PyTorch for deep learning. Good experience with development in Linux/Unix environments, including handling computations on HPC clusters. Meritorious: Experience collaborating in shared codebases via GitHub. Ability to write efficient, testable, and maintainable code ("clean code"). We would like you to have experience or a strong interest in one or more of the following areas: Advanced machine learning, such as generative modeling (diffusion, flow, or transport models) or representation learning. Applied ML (deep learning) within geoscientific domains, meteorology, or atmospheric modeling. Handling and processing of large, multidimensional datasets (e.g., satellite data or radar). Mathematical statistics (e.g., Bayesian inference, stochastic dynamical systems, or uncertainty quantification/ensembles). Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration or work in international research projects. As a person, you are challenged by problem-solving and have good analytical abilities. Curiosity and a willingness to continuously develop your expertise within a rapidly changing research field are prerequisites. You are self-driven and take responsibility for your work, which you carry out in a structured way to deliver requested results on time. You are goal-oriented and set and maintain timelines. Your communication skills are important and you are accustomed to presenting/communicating results in internal and external contexts. You have good knowledge of English in speech and writing.
