Researcher in Climatology

Strong research and attractive education programs attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future. The Department of Earth Sciences conducts research and education in earth sciences and geography. The research is organized around three main themes: climate and climate change, Earth surface processes, and the geosphere. Research on climate and climate change encompasses climate modeling, regional climate dynamics, paleoclimate reconstruction, dendrochronology, and analysis of instrumental and proxy-based climate data. For more information about the department, see https://www.gu.se/geovetenskaper The Department of Earth Sciences is now seeking a researcher for a limited-term position focusing on temperature variability during the warm season in northern Fennoscandia in a long-term climate perspective. Field description: climatology, with focus on comparisons between paleoclimate models and proxy data, and extreme temperatures during the warm season Instrumental climate observations cover only a small part of the time scales needed to assess how unusual regional climate extremes are. Year-resolved paleoclimate reconstructions can extend this perspective over centuries to millennia and serve as independent references for evaluating climate model simulations. The project uses a quantitative tree-ring anatomical reconstruction of May–August temperature from northern Sweden and Finland for the period 850–2019. The reconstruction will be compared with simulations from the past millennium, historical simulations, and future simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project and Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project. The purpose of the position is to finalize and further develop the model–proxy analysis, quantify uncertainties in projected occurrences of record-warm seasons, and contribute to completion and submission of a scientific manuscript. Duties The researcher will work with existing paleoclimate reconstruction data, instrumental data or reanalysis data for temperature, and climate model simulations. The main duties include: using observations from 2020 onwards as an independent evaluation of the model projections; conducting sensitivity analyses with available past1000, historical, and SSP simulations from PMIP4/CMIP6; contributing substantially to interpretation of results and writing, submission, and revision of a scientific article for peer review; and collaborating with researchers at University of Gothenburg and national and international partner institutions. Qualifications The applicant must have: completed a doctoral degree, or have an equivalent foreign degree assessed as comparable to a Swedish doctoral degree, in physical geography, climatology, atmospheric science, paleoclimatology, environmental science, or another subject relevant to the position; documented research experience in climatology, climate variability, climate extremes, evaluation of climate models, or a related area; experience processing and analyzing gridded climate model, observational, or reanalysis data; strong knowledge of scientific programming in Python, MATLAB, R, or equivalent software; very good ability to communicate in speech and writing in English. The following qualifications are advantageous: experience comparing climate model simulations with paleoclimate proxy reconstructions; knowledge of dendroclimatology, quantitative wood anatomy, tree-ring proxy data, or proxy system modeling; experience with both CMIP5/PMIP3 and CMIP6/PMIP4 simulations; a strong publication record in climatology, paleoclimatology, climate modeling, or climate extremes; and experience working in international and interdisciplinary research collaborations. The position requires a researcher who can work independently, take responsibility for a clearly defined research task, and deliver results within a short employment period. See the full announcement under Vacant Positions at www.gu.se. Employment The position is a limited-term position as a researcher for three months. Scope: 100%, full-time Location: Department of Earth Sciences, University of Gothenburg Employment period: October 1, 2026–December 31, 2026 Contact Information Jesper Björklund Department of Earth Sciences, University of Gothenburg Email: [email protected] Application Applications are made through University of Gothenburg's digital recruitment system. The application must include: a personal letter describing the applicant's relevant scientific background and explaining how the applicant's qualifications correspond to the position's duties; a curriculum vitae, including the date of the doctoral degree and a complete publication list; a copy of the doctoral degree certificate. The application must be received no later than August 23, 2026.
