PhD Student in Chemistry, with specialization in Biophysical Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry is seeking a PhD student in chemistry with a specialization in biophysical chemistry. The PhD student's project will explore protein motions, reactions, and functions. The position is for four years of doctoral research, which includes independent research and participation in courses at the doctoral level. Application deadline is October 15, 2026. Project Description and Responsibilities Thesis Topic: Studies of conformational dynamics in membrane proteins using time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (TR-XSS) Would you like to explore how proteins move, react, and function? You will join a research team at Umeå University in Sweden and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France, spending three years in France followed by one year in Sweden. During this time, you will receive training in molecular biological techniques to produce medically important membrane proteins, and you will explore new sample handling techniques that enable capturing structural dynamics using time-resolved X-ray solution scattering. You will be stationed at ID09, a state-of-the-art experimental beamline for following molecular processes as they occur. In this PhD project, you will study two biologically and medically important membrane proteins: the zinc-transporting ATPase SsZntA and the dopamine D2 receptor. Using laser-activated photolabile protecting groups (caged compounds), you will initiate ATP- and ligand-driven reactions and follow the resulting structural changes from milliseconds to seconds. This will provide insight into how these proteins function at the molecular level and reveal mechanisms central to membrane protein function. An important part of the project will also involve developing and applying improved TR-XSS workflows that extend the available time window and reduce sample consumption. These methodological developments will contribute to enabling time-resolved structural studies of challenging membrane proteins that are slow, complex, or difficult to produce in large quantities. The project offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge methods, advanced synchrotron experiments, and biologically highly relevant systems. By combining ambitious scientific questions with advanced experimental and analytical methods, you will develop strong interdisciplinary expertise and gain excellent prospects for future opportunities in academia, research infrastructure, and the life science sector. Eligibility and Qualifications Basic eligibility is held by someone who has completed a degree at the advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or who has otherwise, within or outside the country, acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. To meet the requirement of special eligibility for admission to doctoral education in chemistry, the applicant must have basic university education of at least 90 higher education credits in chemistry or other subjects assessed as directly relevant to the current specialization. Of the 90 higher education credits, at least 15 higher education credits at the advanced level within the specialization, or equivalent, must be included. Prerequisites as stated above are considered met even by those who have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. Eligibility requirements must be fulfilled at the time of admission, but need not be fulfilled when you submit your application. Other requirements are: Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required, as well as a strong interest in biophysics, biochemistry, and/or structural biology. The Department of Physics conducts strong and expanding research with several different focus areas, such as organic electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, space physics, and theoretical physics. The department is part of KBC, the Chemical-Biological Center at Umeå University. We have a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and excellent access to modern instrumentation and analytical infrastructure. The Department of Physics is recruiting a Staff Scientist for a project focused on developing biosensors based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence-based methods. The position is a full-time appointment (100%) with a start date of October 16, 2026, or by agreement. Main Responsibilities The project involves developing sensors for detecting biological and chemical markers using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence-based methods. The work tasks primarily include synthesis, characterization, and analysis of materials and sensor components using methods within optics, photonics, and materials science. An important part of the work also involves simulations using commercial software, such as COMSOL. Synthesis work includes coating techniques, thin-film methods, sol-gel methods, spray techniques, and nanoimprinting, several of which are performed in a cleanroom environment. Characterization includes advanced optical measurements of, for example, transmittance, reflectance, absorbance, and other optical properties, as well as analysis using XPS, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and surface physics characterization with atomic force microscopy. The fabricated components will be applied in the biosensor field. The responsibilities also include contributing to the research group's other activities. Qualification Requirements We are seeking an engaged and responsible person with strong motivation to develop both as an independent researcher and as a member of a research group. A PhD in physics, materials science, or a closely related field is required. Documented experience with synthesis methods for alloys, metallic films, and nanomaterials is mandatory. This includes experience with thin-film techniques, sol-gel methods, spray techniques, and nanoimprinting. Experience with advanced optical characterization, including measurement of transmittance, reflectance, absorbance, and other optical properties, is highly desirable. Experience with XPS, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and surface physics characterization is also desirable. Experience with computer simulation in the field of optics, particularly with COMSOL, is desirable. Experience with biosensors and work in cleanroom environments is also desirable. The applicant must have demonstrated strong ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with others in a research environment. Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is required. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities, particularly collaboration skills, communication skills, analytical ability, initiative, and the ability to work independently. Your assignment as a road worker We are expanding our team with a road worker! If you are interested in maintaining and caring for roads, this is the position for you. The work consists mainly of operations and maintenance-related tasks connected to Umeå's operational area. As a road worker, no two days are the same, but you are responsible for, among other things, inspecting the road network in the area, reporting any deficiencies and subsequently addressing them - all to create safe and secure roads for our citizens. The tasks are linked to ground maintenance and winter road maintenance as well as minor construction projects. Common assignments include work with clearing saws, sign work, pothole repairs, traffic arrangements, and TMA assignments. The position includes summer and winter on-call duty with responsibility for calling out salt trucks and plow units. During on-call duty, you as a road worker take on a supervisory responsibility and direct work and communication with Svevia's subcontractors. In the position you are supported by close supervision and engaged colleagues. The position is full-time and working hours are normally between 7 AM - 4 PM. During on-call duty, work occurs during all hours of the day, 365 days a year. Who are you?
