Responsibilities As a registered nurse with us, you will work with a unique range of patients - from newborn infants to people at the end of life. You will work in a team with physicians and nursing assistants in assessing, prioritizing, and caring for critically ill patients. Your Introduction You will receive training one clinic at a time, and once you feel confident in one clinic, you move to the next. When you start, you begin at one of our Surgery/Internal Medicine/Orthopedic clinics and stay there for approximately 2-4 months. Once you are familiar with all three clinics, you are trained to receive patients at 36B (infection entrance) and to work in triage with an initial assessment. After that, you progress to the ambulance dispatch position. Before ambulance placement, there is both ambulance training and TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) to prepare you for the role. We also have a position we call Front Nurse, which is located at reception and performs an initial assessment to determine where a patient should seek care. This involves both directing patients to the various clinics of the emergency department and referring them onward to, for example, primary care or other facilities. About the Workplace Working in the Emergency Department provides broad competency development as you meet patients across many different specialties. Last year, we received approximately 58,000 patients for physician visits, of which 2,500 arrived by ambulance. Our largest patient groups are in internal medicine/infection, surgery, and orthopedics. During on-call hours, we also see patients from smaller clinics such as ophthalmology, otolaryngology, gynecology, and oral surgery.
