Senior Backend Engineer

About the role Brickanta is built by an AI-veteran team. We've been shipping AI systems since 2018 and have built technical products inside some of the world's biggest brands. Now we're pointing that at a $15 trillion industry that software mostly forgot. We build for a domain where reliability matters: high-stakes decisions, messy inputs, real money on the line. We're 20 people and moving fast. At our size you own big parts of the backend that the whole product stands on. You'll get fuzzy problems like "document ingestion needs to be fast and reliable," along with the room to decide what to build and the mandate to ship it. We don't optimize for credentials. We optimize for builders who ship. What you'll build and own The core services behind bid analysis, estimation, and procurement: APIs, data pipelines, background jobs, and the plumbing that turns messy construction inputs (documents, specs, standards, drawings) into structured data our AI can reason over and our customers can trust The data layer itself. Schema design, query performance, and the indexing and batching decisions that keep things fast as records pile up The architecture that outlives any single feature. You make the calls on data model, service boundaries, when to add a queue, and what breaks at 10x, and the rest of the team builds on them for years Reliability and evaluation infrastructure: the systems that measure quality, catch regressions, and make AI output repeatable and measurable Performance and observability that hold up as usage scales, so the product stays fast and debuggable under real load Integrations and forward-deployed problem-solving that make it work in the customer's reality The systems live in production, which means you run them. You're on call for what you build, and you write code that's debuggable when something goes wrong at 3am You're probably a fit if you Have shipped and operated backend systems in production. You've been on call, debugged the thing at 2am, and learned from it Have real fluency with SQL and relational data. You anticipate bottlenecks and can read the metrics after you ship to confirm it's working Have the judgment to know when to build something properly versus ship a rough version and revisit, which corners are safe to cut, and when "clever" is a liability. You've felt the consequences of getting this wrong Reason from user pain → solution → measurable outcome Care about correctness in messy, real-world data, including the edge cases that only appear in production Move fast and care about craft at the same time Raise the people around you through code review, patterns others follow, and mentoring, without slowing your own shipping Work with little management. You surface risks early, push back on shaky requirements, and translate between technical reality and business need, including talking to construction customers directly Have opinions about AI and LLM systems in production (evals, reliability, latency, cost) or are hungry to develop them How we work AI is core to how we build, not a bolt-on. We work AI-first day to day, encode our conventions and hard-won lessons into skill files, and expect everyone here to sharpen that craft as agentic engineering matures. If you've been pushing the edge of how AI fits into real engineering work, you'll fit right in. What success looks like In your first month you've shipped something real to production, you understand our stack and the shape of construction data, and you're already flagging what's fragile By your first quarter you own a core backend surface end to end. When it breaks, people look to you, and it breaks less because of decisions you've made By your first year the architecture you drove is load-bearing across the product, new engineers ramp faster on the patterns you set, and the systems you own are ones the team trusts without thinking about them Tech stack Something like: language and framework (e.g. Python/FastAPI, TypeScript/Node), primary database (e.g. Postgres), queue and cache (e.g. Redis), infra and deployment (e.g. AWS, Docker), plus the LLM tooling you use. List what a hire will actually touch. You can add the standard Brickanta line: prior experience with our exact stack is a nice-to-have, not a requirement. How we evaluate Show us what you've built: repos, demos, shipped products, systems you've owned end to end What you've made work counts for more than where you worked Note: Sweden is Brickanta's first and most important market. Working comfort in English is required; Swedish is a plus but not required. Keen on doing your life's work, bringing one of the world's largest and most impactful industries, the $15 trillion construction industry, into the AI era?

Platform Engineering Lead and Game Changer

St1 is a company driving the energy transition and operates in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and the United Kingdom. St1's energy portfolio includes oil products, biogas, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel (HVO), and solar energy. St1 also manages several major energy transition projects. We are looking for a Platform Engineering Lead who wants to be part of St1's Cloud & Infrastructure team. The team is responsible for developing critical business platforms, including cloud infrastructure, identity management, ITSM, and security tools. Your primary focus will be cloud infrastructure and DevOps, but your impact extends beyond technology: you will drive automation, improve processes, and help create self-service cloud platforms that enable developers to deliver faster with less friction. To succeed in this role, you think like a developer. You understand CI/CD, software delivery, and what it takes to build and operate reliable systems. You lead by example while being hands-on and supporting your team through coaching, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. You don't need to be an AI expert today, but you should be curious about how AI is changing platform engineering and willing to explore its possibilities. How You Contribute to Change As a Platform Engineering Lead, you will: • Lead and develop the platform engineering team by setting technical direction, supporting engineers, and fostering continuous improvement. • Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure, automation pipelines, and platform tools. • Build scalable cloud services using Infrastructure-as-Code, especially Terraform. • Own platform services throughout their lifecycle—from design and development to operations and evolution. • Champion DevSecOps principles where security, reliability, and observability are built in from the start. • Better support developers in cloud and hybrid environments through improved tools and processes. • Optimize cloud costs and support FinOps practices. • Identify automation opportunities and reduce manual platform work. • Troubleshoot issues, improve operational reliability, and document decisions and practices. What You Bring We are looking for someone who combines technical depth with a passion for enabling others. You likely have: • Experience leading by example, coaching others, and collaborating to solve complex technical challenges. • A strong background in software development combined with practical infrastructure experience. • Experience building and delivering software through the entire delivery pipeline. • Practical experience with cloud platforms such as GCP and/or Azure. • Strong knowledge of cloud architecture, governance, networking, IAM, security, and cost management. • Hands-on experience with Terraform, CI/CD, automation, and DevSecOps. • Curiosity and practical interest in AI, demonstrated through experiments, tools, or personal projects. • A pragmatic approach to problem-solving and the ability to make decisions in uncertain situations. • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Who We're Looking For We are looking for someone who lives the St1 spirit: curious, business-minded, engaged, and thoughtful. You help teams surface challenges early, follow through even when situations get difficult, think beyond organizational silos, and continuously work to improve how we collaborate. Why Join St1? • Lead a platform team with real influence over St1's technical direction. • Stay technically active while developing a high-performing team. • Shape how AI transforms platform engineering and operations. • Develop your expertise in cloud architecture, AI, and platform leadership. • Work in a Nordic tech organization built on high trust, accountability, and collaboration. How We Support Your Development At St1, we value safety, well-being, inclusion, and trust. You will work in a practical and engaging culture where you can explore ideas, take ownership, and grow alongside teams across different countries. You will have genuine leadership responsibility for a platform team and the services it owns, supported by competitive compensation, bonus programs, and opportunities to develop your career. St1's energy portfolio includes oil products, biogas, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel (HVO), and solar energy. St1 also runs several major energy transition projects. Forward Deployed Engineer (AI & Software) About St1 St1 is an energy transition company with the vision to become the leading producer and seller of CO₂-conscious energy. We operate in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and the United Kingdom. Our portfolio includes oil products, biogas, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel (HVO), and solar energy. With 1,150 service stations in Finland, Sweden, and Norway, we are a team of over 1,000 curious, engaged, and thoughtful employees working together to change the game. About the Role As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will work at the intersection of St1's operations and technology. You will collaborate directly with business teams to transform real operational challenges into practical AI and software solutions. This is a role focused on hands-on execution – not a traditional engineering role behind the scenes. You will work closely with teams in retail, energy trading, and refinery operations to identify opportunities, build solutions, and take ideas from prototype stage to measurable business results. The role suits an engineer with a few years of experience who thrives working quickly, solving ambiguous problems, and collaborating closely with end users. You will work with senior engineers, architects, and platform teams who will support you in building scalable solutions. Your mission: to help take prioritized use cases from idea to value in weeks – not quarters. How You Create Impact You will: • Work closely with business units and corporate functions to identify, prototype, and deliver solutions from St1's list of use cases. • Build rapid prototypes and proof-of-concept solutions, validate them with stakeholders, and support informed decisions about further development. • Drive daily technical delivery while making pragmatic technical choices. • Use AI-assisted development methods and agent-based approaches to accelerate delivery while maintaining quality, security, and compliance. • Translate business needs into technical solutions and feed learnings back into St1's technical roadmap. • Work closely with end users, AI and data teams, software developers, architects, and platform teams. • Help transform successful pilots into production-ready solutions. • Ensure solutions comply with St1's requirements for AI governance, data management, security, and compliance. What You Bring We're looking for someone who is curious, collaboration-focused, and driven by creating real impact. You likely have: • A solid technical background with a few years of experience building and delivering software or AI solutions. • Practical experience in at least one area such as applied AI, cloud platforms, data engineering, or machine learning. • A strong focus on delivery and the ability to prototype and iterate with non-technical users. • The ability to translate operational challenges into practical technical solutions. • Experience with modern development practices: APIs, integrations, version control, testing, deployment, and AI-assisted development tools. • Fluent English; knowledge of Finnish, Swedish, or Norwegian is a plus. • Willingness to occasionally travel to St1's facilities in the Nordic region and the United Kingdom. Who We're Looking For At St1, we value people who challenge, collaborate, and grow. We call this the St1 Spirit: being curious, business-minded, engaged, and thoughtful. It means creating an environment where people dare to speak their minds, take responsibility when things become challenging, think beyond their own team boundaries, and continuously keep learning. Bring your knowledge, your ambition, and your curiosity – and help us challenge the ordinary. Why Join St1? • Create visible business results through technology and AI. • Work directly with real operational challenges. • Learn from experienced engineers and architects while developing your career. • Build modern AI-driven solutions as part of a Nordic tech organization. • Contribute to St1's energy transition in retail, energy trading, and refinery operations. • Work from Helsinki, Turku, or Stockholm with excellent benefits. How We Support Your Development At St1, safety, well-being, and trust always come first. We offer an inclusive culture where you can take responsibility, explore new ideas, and grow. You'll have the opportunity to collaborate across borders, develop your skills, and contribute to meaningful work with real impact.
