This is a fixed-term position for 5 months. Description of the Unit The County Administrative Board's Protected Nature unit works to preserve Västernorrland's most valuable natural areas. This includes both establishing new nature reserves and managing several of the county's more than 240 existing nature reserves. The unit also works with outdoor recreation issues, wetland restoration, LONA support, and water protection efforts. You will be part of the working group that handles reserve establishment. Your Tasks You will work on revising existing decisions and management plans for nature reserves in the county. Decisions and management plans are revised from time to time as new knowledge emerges and new needs arise. The work involves describing and understanding different habitats and nature, as well as assessing what measures are needed to maintain and develop the natural values that exist in the areas. The decisions are based on the Environmental Code and align with what is then expressed in the plans for managing the areas. The process also includes producing digital maps for decisions and management measures. You work independently but in close collaboration with a group of experienced handlers within administration and reserve establishment. You work according to described processes, but each area is unique and problem-solving is part of the work. The position includes field trips to relevant areas. Experienced Species Protection Specialist
Do you want to work with species protection issues in some of Sweden's most extensive development and construction projects? We are seeking an experienced species protection expert who wants to contribute their expertise to assignments related to infrastructure, energy, mining, and infrastructure development in northern Sweden. In this role, you will be responsible for inventories, analysis, and advisory services within species protection, with a particular focus on species groups such as birds, amphibians, and bats. You will work throughout the entire process – from planning and conducting field surveys to analysis, report writing, and preparation of documentation for permitting and consultation processes. The work also includes dialogue with authorities, clients, and other stakeholders as well as support to project managers and technical specialists in complex project environments. We are looking for someone with relevant higher education or university education in fields such as biology, ecology, or nature conservation, and at least three years of experience working with species protection issues. You have solid knowledge of Swedish environmental legislation and experience conducting inventories, assessments, and investigations related to species protection. Postdoctoral Researcher in Chromatin Dynamics at Extreme Desiccation Tolerance
Department of Plant Biology About the Position We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our research group at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala to investigate how plant cells reorganize their cell nuclei and gene regulatory systems to survive extreme environmental conditions. Certain organisms can survive the loss of nearly all cellular water by entering a state of suspended animation, known as anhydrobiosis. Orthodox plant seeds and so-called resurrection plants—plants with extreme desiccation tolerance—are remarkable examples: differentiated vegetative cells can tolerate severe drying and subsequently resume normal growth after rehydration. How a differentiated cell can undergo such an extreme physiological transition while preserving genome integrity, cellular identity, and the ability to reactivate gene expression remains not fully understood. The project will investigate changes in chromatin and transcription in connection with the transition to the desiccated state and recovery from it, using plants with extreme desiccation tolerance and possibly complementary plant systems. We are particularly interested in understanding whether desiccation is accompanied by the establishment of a specialized and reversible chromatin state, how this state contributes to protecting the genome and halting transcription, and how normal organization of the cell nucleus and normal gene expression are restored after rehydration. This position is affiliated with the research group led by Dr Stefanie Rosa at the Department of Plant Biology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala. Our group studies how the organization and dynamics of chromatin affect the regulation and stability of plant genomes (https://www.slu.se/en/profilepages/r/stefanie-rosa/). The project offers great freedom to develop a new research direction at the intersection of chromatin biology, transcription, cell biology, and extreme stress tolerance. The successful candidate will have access to advanced microscopy infrastructure at Uppsala BioCenter and work in a collaborative research environment encompassing plant cell biology, genetics, genomics, and developmental biology. Your Background We are seeking a creative and highly motivated researcher with a PhD in plant biology, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, genomics, or a related field. Previous experience with molecular biological methods, cell biology, and plant developmental biology is advantageous. Strong ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is required. Responsibilities The position is linked to the EU Horizon Europe project SEADOTs and the Biodiversa+ project UrbanOcean and will involve the following tasks: Contribute to the continued development and documentation of an agent-based model (ABM) for Baltic Sea fisheries, including fishing fleet behavior and fish population dynamics under various policy scenarios. Analyze relevant environmental, fisheries (e.g., AIS vessel tracking data, logbooks, ICES stock assessments, and HELCOM spatial data), and socioeconomic data for the Baltic Sea, and ensure that FAIR data standards are followed for integration into the agent-based model and the EDITO platform. Analyze and visualize model results and empirical data for project outputs, scientific publications, and science communication. Support collaboration with experts and other stakeholders to validate model assumptions and results. Contribute to writing scientific reports and research articles. Qualifications We are seeking a candidate with previous experience working with Baltic Sea fisheries and agent-based modeling, as well as the following qualifications: A master's degree in a relevant field such as sustainability science, marine/fisheries science, environmental science, or a related discipline. Documented experience with agent-based modeling, preferably using NetLogo. Experience working with spatial data and GIS tools (QGIS or similar GIS software). Proficiency in R for statistical analysis and data visualization. You must have the ability to write scientific texts in English as well as strong communication and collaboration skills.
