JOB

Postdoctoral Fellow in Structural Studies of Mitochondrial DNA Replication

This postdoctoral position is part of a research project funded by a Wallenberg Scholar grant. The postdoctoral researcher will work in an interdisciplinary team with expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry and structural biology. The project aims to understand the molecular mechanisms that govern mitochondrial DNA replication and gene expression, and how defects in these processes contribute to human disease. Subject area Structural studies of mitochondrial DNA replication Subject area description Mitochondrial DNA replication is essential for maintaining mtDNA integrity and stability and thereby for normal mitochondrial function and cellular energy production. Defects in the replication process can lead to mtDNA depletion or deletions and cause mitochondrial disease. Our research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms that govern replication of human mtDNA. We combine structural biology, in vitro biochemistry and cell biology to investigate how the mitochondrial DNA replication machinery is organized and regulated. A particular focus is on structural and functional studies of the protein complexes involved in mtDNA replication and on understanding how disease-associated mutations affect these processes. Job assignments In this project, the postdoctoral researcher will carry out structural and functional studies of protein and protein-DNA complexes involved in mitochondrial DNA replication. A central aim will be to determine structures of replication complexes using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and use these structures to understand how the proteins interact and regulate mtDNA replication at the molecular level. The work will include preparation and biochemical characterization of protein complexes, cryo-EM sample preparation and grid optimization, as well as processing and structural analysis of cryo-EM data. Structural findings will be combined with in vitro biochemical analyses to test mechanistic models and investigate how disease-associated mutations affect the function of the replication machinery. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to drive the project independently while working closely with other members of the research group and our collaborators. Eligibility The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made. In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area. Assessment criteria We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with a doctoral degree in structural biology, biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field. Documented experience in structural studies of proteins or macromolecular complexes using cryo-electron microscopy is required. Experience in protein purification and protein biochemistry is also required. Experience in single-particle cryo-EM, including sample preparation, grid optimization, data processing and structural analysis, is particularly meritorious. Experience in structural studies of protein-DNA complexes is a strong advantage. Knowledge of mitochondrial systems and experience in cloning, mutagenesis, protein expression, cell culture and in vitro biochemical analyses are considered merits. Great emphasis will be placed on scientific skills and the ability to independently plan, carry out and analyse research. The work involves close collaboration both within and outside the research group, making good teamwork and communication skills important. The candidate is expected to have strong scientific curiosity and the ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. Excellent spoken and written English is required, as the research group operates in an international environment. Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Employment The employment is full time and temporary, two years with the possibility of one year's extension, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed. Systems Developer with Focus on AI and Data Analytics

Description We are looking for an experienced systems developer who wants to build the administration's data platform and our AI-driven services. You work hands-on in Python and SQL, you model data so it can be trusted, and you take services all the way to deployment in containers and the cloud. Right now we're building both the platform and the working methods around it. You come with experience from environments where development and operations are connected. Do you want to be part of building one of Sweden's most curious and responsible AI and data functions in the public sector with your hands on the code—join us! About the Development and Transformation Unit We are a cross-functional team where development leaders, analysts, communicators, and technology specialists work together. Our mission is to establish modern working methods, build capabilities, and deliver solutions that work in everyday practice from strategy to execution. You'll thrive here if you want to create something new, test, learn, and scale what works. Responsibilities As a systems developer in our team, you will: Develop applications and APIs in Python, primarily FastAPI, against our own data repositories and the city's systems. Build and further develop the data platform's analytics layer and semantic layer: modeling, metrics and dimensions defined in one place, data contracts and tests, version-controlled as code. Build and maintain ETL and ELT flows against both existing SQL Server environments and Intraservices lakehouse, with scheduling and error handling that can be debugged. Containerize and deploy services in OpenShift, with automated flows via CI/CD and GitOps, logging, and alerts. Take AI support from prototype to manageable service: integrations with language models, RAG against the administration's own material, quality evaluation, cost control, and traceability. Document architectural decisions, operational instructions, and runbooks as part of the work, and participate in code review and pair programming. Translate the organization's needs into technical requirements together with stakeholders. Work closely with CTO and architecture, analysts, and Intraservice as platform providers. A typical day might involve modeling a metric with an analyst in the morning, then debugging a pipeline in the afternoon, reviewing a colleague's code, and rolling out a new version of a service. The role shifts between the architectural and the practical, and between building new things and making existing services more stable. You don't train your own models and you don't work with image recognition; the focus is on data, integration, and operations. Qualifications Requirements: University education relevant to the position, or education and experience that we collectively consider equivalent. Several years of professional-level systems development experience in Python, in code that a team will maintain further. Strong knowledge of SQL and data modeling: you can explain why a model looks the way it does and take full responsibility for it. Experience with containerization using Docker and practical experience with Kubernetes or OpenShift. Experience building automated flows for testing and deployment yourself, in GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or equivalent, with relevant version control. Experience working in a team around a shared codebase, where multiple people develop, review, and deploy the same services. Good technical understanding of AI and generative AI and how it's applied in an organization. Good Swedish in speech and writing. Merits: Experience with semantic layers and metrics layers, for example Cube, dbt SQLMesh, Semantic Layer, or Lightdash. Practical experience with LLM integration: RAG, embeddings, response evaluation, and cost management. Experience with lakehouse and analytics environments, for example Databricks, Delta Lake, DuckDB, or Iceberg. Experience with Argo CD and Kustomize or Helm. Experience with AI and digitalization in the public sector, and with legal aspects related to data and AI (GDPR, the AI Regulation, and public access and confidentiality). Experience with data-driven solutions, BI, and decision support, for example Metabase or Power BI. Personal Competencies: Self-directed and responsible: you take a task from design to operations and are comfortable even if things are unclear at the edges. Educational and communicative: you get business, technology, and legal perspectives to understand each other and adapt your message to the audience. Analytical and judicious: you weigh possibilities against risks and strive to understand technical positions even when information is incomplete. Structured and results-oriented: you take an idea all the way to real, sustainable benefit and leave behind solutions that can be managed. Relationship-building and unpretentious: you build trust broadly, share what you know, and thrive in a cross-functional, self-organizing environment. Before employment, background checks will be conducted according to the City of Gothenburg's recruitment rules, including verification of identity and citizenship. We welcome your application! Other Information The City of Gothenburg applies individual and differentiated salary setting. Here you can find more information about, among other things, salary statistics: Salary, compensation and benefits – City of Gothenburg As an employee in our administration, you are offered, among other things, wellness allowance, bike benefits, and employee support. According to the Education Act, excerpts from the police's criminal record register must be presented by persons before they are employed in preschool activities, school, and school childcare. You can order this on the Police's website. The work is characterized by low-affect care and individualized methods where predictability, stability, and continuity are central elements. Through a clear holistic perspective, housing, support, activities, and social contexts are integrated into daily life, while environmental transitions are limited to reduce stress and create safety.
