Department of Urban and Rural Development Doctoral Subject: Agrarian History Description of the PhD Project: A key question in historical research is how people in pre-industrial societies gained access to food. During the early modern period, the majority of all food in Europe consisted of grain, transformed into bread, beer, and porridge. This was the most important human energy source, and the vast majority of Europe's population therefore worked to produce, transport, and process grain. Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning
At the Department of Systems and Control, we develop both theory and concrete tools for designing systems that learn, reason, and act in the real world based on a seamless combination of data, mathematical models, and algorithms. Our research integrates expertise from machine learning, optimization, control theory, and applied mathematics, spanning diverse application areas such as medicine, energy systems, biomedical systems, neuroscience, and security. The department maintains a broad network of long-standing international collaborators worldwide, including University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London, University of Sydney, University of Newcastle, and Aalto University. Responsibilities This project focuses on developing, analyzing, and applying new methods in reinforcement learning and model predictive control (MPC), both stochastic and deterministic formulations. The emphasis will be on developing methods for robust reinforcement learning and/or MPC formulations. We are particularly interested in environments where the cost or reward function is non-ergodic. In these situations, expected costs/rewards do not capture the behavior of individual rollouts, requiring new designs. We will develop and analyze generally applicable algorithms and models together with our collaborators. The postdoctoral researcher will be jointly supervised by Assistant Professor Dominik Baumann (Aalto University) and, regarding MPC aspects, we will collaborate with Assistant Professor Johannes Köhler at Imperial College London. Technical components may include reinforcement learning, state models, MPC, deep learning, and probabilistic modeling in general. The position may include teaching up to 20% depending on availability and interest. You are expected to be able to teach in Swedish or English. The Internal Audit function is to independently review whether management's internal control and governance are designed so that the university achieves its goals and meets the requirements of the authority regulations regarding efficiency, regulatory compliance, and proper stewardship of state funds. The work is conducted in accordance with internal audit regulations and international professional standards. Work Tasks As an internal auditor, you will review the university's internal control and governance in various areas. You plan, conduct, and report on your audits independently or together with your colleagues. The work includes actively participating in internal audit's environmental monitoring, risk analysis, and contributing to the department's development. You report to the Internal Audit Manager and present your audits, both in writing and verbally, to the audit committee. Work within internal audit takes place in close collaboration and dialogue. You have contact with different parts and levels within the university, which requires that you establish good cooperation with the parts of the organization being audited while maintaining your independence and integrity. Qualifications We are looking for you who have: An academic degree in economics, social sciences, law, or equivalent education that the employer considers equivalent. Several years of experience in internal and/or external audit, or other professional experience that we consider equivalent. A very good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in Swedish and good ability to understand complex information in English. Your Assignment As a resident physician, you will work across all areas of the section during the 5-year specialist training period. Work is scheduled for daytime, evening, and weekends. As a university hospital, we have a strong interest in education and research. The clinic holds resident teaching one afternoon every other week. In addition, there is continuing education at morning meetings with case reviews and lectures one hour each week for all clinic physicians. On-call duty is included; you will begin on-call shifts after approximately six months. As a university hospital, considerable teaching takes place within our operations. Mentoring of future colleagues will be part of your assignment. Your Qualifications Medical degree. Experience from locum positions and/or scientific specialization within the field is meritorious.
