Postdoctoral Researcher in Solid-State Batteries - Micromechanical Modeling of Cells

Job Responsibilities The next major leap in battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSB). This concept makes it possible to replace the highly flammable organic electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries with a safer and more compact solid electrolyte. As part of the Swedish state battery initiative COMPEL, which aims to support competence and excellence in battery research and education for the transportation sector, KTH is launching a coordinated initiative on composite-SSB with seven postdoctoral positions across multiple disciplines, focusing on different aspects along the battery value chain, from synthesis and cell manufacturing to characterization, modeling, and scaled production. The two-year postdoctoral project on Micromechanical Modeling and Mechanical Characterization of Contact, Interfaces, and Fracture in Solid-State Battery Cells is located at the Department of Engineering Mechanics (Division of Materials and Structural Mechanics) at the School of Engineering Science (SCI). In a solid-state cell, mechanics determines whether the cell functions: unlike a liquid electrolyte, a solid cell must build up and maintain every solid-solid contact under load, while ion insertion and extraction cause swelling and shrinkage, and interfaces between the active material, electrolyte, and current collector must maintain both adhesion and conductivity at the low stack pressures typical in real applications. The project develops a micromechanical modeling framework that resolves the cell at the particle and interface level and couples its mechanical state to its electrochemical performance, where interface delamination, fracture, and particle fragmentation are represented as the mechanisms that reshape the network of conductive contacts. The framework is validated against experimental data from COMPEL collaborations and delivers a design and operation map, including the cell's safe low-pressure window. The postdoctoral researcher will also contribute mechanical and structural characterization of materials and cells developed in the other projects. Qualifications Required A doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree in solid mechanics, engineering mechanics, computational mechanics, materials science, engineering physics, or a related field, with some experience in batteries or battery materials. This qualification requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made. Good knowledge of written and spoken English, as required in daily work. Good skills in computation and numerical modeling, including finite element methods or multiphysics simulation and scientific programming. Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with special focus on gender equality. Meriting At the time of the application deadline, no more than three years since the doctoral degree or foreign equivalent degree was awarded. Experience with solid-state or lithium-ion batteries and familiarity with the mechanics and characterization of battery materials and cells. Practical experience with coupled electro-chemo-mechanical modeling or phase-field modeling of fracture, contact and micromechanics for particle or composite materials, mechanical testing and X-ray tomography, and programming (e.g., Python, C++, or Fortran). Demonstrate an innovative mindset, creativity, and ability to work independently. Good ability to collaborate and ability and interest in working in a team. A brief account of why you want to conduct research, your academic interests, and how they relate to your previous studies and future goals. Maximum 1 page. You will be part of a project team of HPC software researchers at KCSC that collaborates closely with and creates tangible impact for three of Sweden's leading HPC codes: GROMACS (one of the world's most widely used software packages for molecular dynamics), Neko (a highly scalable framework for computational fluid mechanics that was nominated for the ACM Gordon Bell Prize in 2023), and VeloxChem (a versatile open-source software for quantum chemical calculations). As a postdoctoral researcher, your focus will be on developing innovative, technology-aware algorithmic methods directed toward these strategic software projects. Our goal is to go beyond traditional performance optimization; through an interdisciplinary approach, we further develop or redesign core algorithms for modern HPC architectures, with energy efficiency as a central design criterion. Key research objectives include: Mixed-precision algorithms: Design and implement formulations for core domain-specific computational kernels to leverage low-precision hardware without compromising simulation accuracy. Data-centric optimization: Design and implement communication schemes and data access strategies tailored for systems beyond exascale, for example via GPU-centric communication techniques. Collaboration and impact: We encourage you to publish your research and participate in leading international conferences. This gives you the opportunity to contribute directly to the core codebases and reach a global user community. Qualifications Requirements Completed doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirement must be met by the time the employment decision is made. Very good practical experience with software development in modern C++ and/or Fortran. Experience with parallel programming for multi-core processors (CPUs), GPUs, and distributed systems using programming models such as OpenMP, CUDA, SYCL, MPI, and OpenSHMEM. Practical experience optimizing software for large-scale HPC systems, including advanced tracing and performance profiling on modern HPC platforms. Excellent communication skills in English and documented ability to communicate research results as required in daily work. Ability to independently work with technical solutions and research questions while contributing constructively as part of a team. We are seeking a candidate with solid experience in software development for scientific applications and high-performance computing, as well as deep expertise in performance optimization. Merits At the time of the application deadline, no more than three years since the doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree was awarded. Experience with performance modeling, performance analysis, and optimization for heterogeneous architectures. Experience with software development in any of the following areas: molecular dynamics, computational fluid mechanics, or quantum chemistry. Experience working with large-scale scientific software projects and research collaborations. Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with particular emphasis on gender equality. We will place great emphasis on personal qualities. Become Part of KTH KTH shapes the future through education, research, and innovation. As a leading international technical university, we play an active role in driving and contributing to the transition to a sustainable society. Here you have the opportunity to grow and develop at a creative and dynamic workplace with good working conditions and benefits. Gender equality, diversity, and equal opportunities are a quality issue and a natural part of KTH's values as a university and state agency. Application You apply via KTH's recruitment system. As an applicant, you have primary responsibility for ensuring that your application is complete when submitted. Your application should contain: CV including relevant professional experience and knowledge. Copy of diploma and transcripts from your previous university studies. Translations into English or Swedish if the original documents are not issued in one of these languages. A brief statement of why you wish to conduct research, your academic interests, and how they relate to your previous studies and future goals. Maximum 2 pages. Your application must be received by KTH no later than the application deadline at midnight, CET/CEST (Central European Time/Central European Summer Time). About the Employment The employment is permanent, but for a maximum of two years. A postdoctoral position is a time-limited merit-based employment focused primarily on research, intended as a first career step after earning your doctorate. Other For information about the processing of personal data in connection with recruitment. It is possible that an employment at KTH is classified as security-sensitive. If so for this position, a security clearance of the applicant will be conducted in accordance with the Security Protection Act (2018:585) after consent. In these cases, approval following a security clearance is a prerequisite for employment. We decline direct contact from staffing and recruitment firms and vendors of job advertisements.
