Responsibilities
Oxygenated organic radicals are important drivers of chemistry in many systems, such as metabolism in living organisms, polymerization, combustion systems, and the natural environment (Earth's atmosphere). However, few techniques can detect them today. We are seeking a motivated researcher to develop and apply a mass spectrometric technique (proton transfer mass spectrometry, PTr-MS) for detection of individual oxygenated organic radicals in air, within the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced project EPHEMERAL. The work will encompass characterization and optimization of a state-of-the-art Time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTr-MS) and use of other instruments to detect these radicals in laboratory and in air. This position will be within the Nozière group at the Department of Chemistry at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm.
Qualifications
Requirements
Completed doctoral degree or foreign degree in chemistry, physics, or appropriate field deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirement must be met at the time the employment decision is made.
Documented experimental experience with gas flow systems
Background or experience with standalone mass spectrometer (not connected to a chromatograph)
Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, as required in daily work
Strong problem-solving skills
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and goal-focused
Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a team
Meritorious
At the application deadline, no more than three years since the doctoral degree or foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree was awarded.
Experience in instrument development
Background or experience in Chemical Ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS), Proton Transfer Mass Spectrometers (PTr-MS), or Time-Of-Flight (TOF) mass spectrometry
Knowledge of atmospheric chemistry or gas-phase kinetics
Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with particular focus on gender equality
We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
