Postdoctoral Researcher in Physical Geography with Focus on the Future of the Greenland Ice Sheet
Postdoctoral Researcher in Physical Geography with Focus on the Future of the Greenland Ice Sheet Would you like to work studying mass changes of Greenland's ice sheet, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employee relationships and offers secure, attractive working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University. The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. Here you will find broad expertise that contributes to solutions for important societal challenges. Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas: rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind energy and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development. Our research combines natural sciences and engineering with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. The department employs over 300 people from more than 30 countries, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. Our six research divisions: Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Paleobiology • Wind Energy For more information, see: https://www.uu.se/institution/geovetenskaper The advertised position is within the research program Air, Water and Landscape Science (LUVAL), which brings together research and education in hydrology, meteorology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. Research in physical geography has a main focus on cold environments, with a primary emphasis on glaciological topics, but also other aspects of the cryosphere. Duties The postdoctoral researcher will work on a project funded by the Swedish Space Agency, with the primary aims of creating a new mapping of bedrock topography and ice thickness for the Greenland ice sheet, and simulating the ice sheet's development through 2300. To achieve this, a new inverse modeling-based method will be used that reconstructs the bedrock topography beneath the ice, while also providing a starting point for predictive modeling. Following recent applications on plateaus and valley glaciers in the Arctic and subarctic (see, for example, Frank and Van Pelt, 2024; Van Pelt and Frank, 2025), and an application to all valley glaciers on Earth (Frank et al. 2026), the method will be optimized in this project for use on the Greenland ice sheet, while utilizing the latest high-resolution satellite data products. Ice flow modeling will be conducted using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM), though machine learning alternatives such as the Instructed Glacier Model (IGM) will also be considered. The project will involve close collaboration with a doctoral student in the same research group at Uppsala University as well as collaboration with international colleagues at Oslo University, Mid Sweden University, the Danish Meteorological Institute, University of Liège, University of Fairbanks, and University of Lausanne. The position includes 20% teaching at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, in earth science (physical geography/hydrology) at undergraduate and advanced levels. Researcher
Department of Animal Biosciences We are seeking a researcher who wants to work on developing new and innovative detection methods for identifying chemical and infectious substances, as well as various types of biomarkers for pathogen detection. The long-term goal is to develop detection methods that can be used in research but above all provide practical benefits through routine use outside academia—for improved food safety, enhanced animal and public health, and optimized pharmaceutical treatment. This position provides excellent conditions to establish your own research line, and it is expected that the recruited researcher will actively seek external funding to ensure long-term financing of the research direction. About the Job At the Department of Food Safety, Infection Biology, Pharmacology and Toxicology (LIFT), we work across a broad range of subjects: food safety, bacteriology, parasitology, virology, One Health, pharmacology, and toxicology. What unites all these fields is an interest and need to develop new innovative detection methods for biological molecules as well as chemical and infectious substances. In many cases, it would be desirable for these detection methods to be designed so they can be used in field conditions. LIFT is now recruiting a researcher in the field of developing innovative detection methods to intensify our work on these issues and to increase collaboration between the different subjects at our department. The researcher position is fully funded for four years, and the recruited researcher is expected during this time to work actively on seeking external research grants to ensure long-term financing of this research direction. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with existing researchers at LIFT, and therefore the person we seek must have excellent collaborative skills. Duties include planning and conducting research initiatives, presenting research results and writing scientific articles, supervising students and doctoral candidates, conference participation, actively working to obtain external research funding, and some administrative work. We are looking for someone who wants to work on developing new innovative detection methods with the long-term goal of improved food safety, enhanced animal and public health, and optimized pharmaceutical treatment. The focus is on identifying biomarkers for detection of pathogens, as well as chemical and infectious substances and other biological molecules. Your Background We seek someone with a scientific background and a doctoral degree in one of the scientific areas we work with at LIFT (food safety, bacteriology, parasitology, virology, One Health, pharmacology, and toxicology). It is a requirement that you have your own experience with independent, practical laboratory work in advanced method development within one of these scientific areas. The experience should include development, optimization, and validation of molecular, enzymatic, or cell-based analytical methods. Since it is a stated ambition that the developed methods should also be able to provide practical benefits outside academia, we would like to see that you have documented experience working with innovation and commercialization, as well as research-related work in regulatory environments where the quality, documentation, usability, and acceptance of new analytical methods outside academia have been in focus. We are looking for someone with strong personal motivation for research work and a long-term ambition to build your own academic research line. Furthermore, you need to have good ability to collaborate with many people, as we have the ambition for this to be an interdisciplinary effort that includes all subjects at LIFT. It is a merit if you have scientific experience (e.g., your own research work, grant applications, teaching) from several (at least two) of the subjects we work with at LIFT. Furthermore, it is a merit if you have documented experience working with innovation and commercialization. For this position, it is required that you speak and write Swedish fluently and have good knowledge of English. The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is considered to have the best conditions to carry out and develop the current work tasks and contribute to positive development of the operation. About Us The Department of Animal Biosciences (HBIO) is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for education, research, and postgraduate studies in several basic and applied scientific areas.
