Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences
Department of Molecular Sciences
SLU is a world-class university in biosciences and environmental sciences, with a vision to play a key role in developing a sustainable future based on science and education. SLU offers an attractive research environment with uniquely broad and world-leading research and excellent opportunities for multi- and interdisciplinary collaborations with research groups in social sciences, economics, engineering and other natural sciences.
The Department of Molecular Sciences, SLU Uppsala, is seeking a University Lecturer (Senior Lecturer) in Food Biotechnology. The Department currently has approximately 90 employees and, together with three other departments, forms an inspiring research environment at the Biocentrum on Ultuna Campus, Uppsala. The Department encompasses several collaborative areas including food science, biotechnology, microbiology, inorganic, physical and organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular structural biology, and natural products chemistry. Research focuses on applied and fundamental biological and chemical processes. The Department also collaborates with industrial partners on the development of innovations important for the transition toward a sustainable society. The Food Biotechnology research area conducts research and education in sustainable food and feed production, circular economy, and fundamental physiology and genetics of microorganisms, as a basis for establishing new biotechnological processes for food and other biochemicals. The Department's research in this field encompasses both traditional fermented foods and the introduction of novel raw materials into the food chain. Methods used include applied microbiology, advanced microbial physiology, fermentation technology, and downstream processing of microbial biomass, with a focus (though not exclusively) on yeast, other microorganisms and microbial consortia.
The Department has advanced infrastructure, including modern fermentation equipment, food-approved laboratories, -omics platforms, plant cultivation facilities, advanced microscopy and molecular biology facilities, as well as spectroscopy, including NMR spectroscopy. The Department also participates in the national SwedNMR initiative.
The Department offers teaching in chemistry, food science, and microbiology at both undergraduate and advanced levels in educational programs leading to, among others, agronomist, bachelor's, and master's degrees.
The environment at the Department encourages research collaborations with other departments at SLU, nationally and internationally.
