With us, you will work with engaged colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and excellent opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. Luleå University of Technology is one of Europe's leading universities in mining and rock engineering. The university offers a unique opportunity to develop knowledge and research skills across the entire mining value chain - from exploration, mining operations, metal production, to land reclamation after mining activities have ended. Subject Description Mining and rock engineering encompasses mining technology, rock technology, and rock mechanics, including rock mass properties, tunnel construction technology, design and dimensioning of mines and rock structures, as well as planning and production processes related to both mining operations and infrastructure development. Project Description It is very important that you, as an applicant for this position, have strong interest and knowledge in data analysis, filtering, and modeling based on large amounts of data. It is important that you have a solid understanding of mining operations and mining systems to also understand the end user's requirements and needs when implementing developed technologies in an industrial environment. It is advantageous if your degree was completed no more than three years before the final application deadline for this position. If there are special circumstances, a doctorate completed earlier may be considered, for example, due to various types of statutory leave. In addition to a doctoral degree in a relevant field, the following selection criteria will be used: - Documented knowledge of mining technology and production optimization. - Documented mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills. - Good knowledge in statistics, AI/ML, as well as mathematical modeling and programming. - Good knowledge in academic writing and review of scientific publications. - Excellent communication and social skills. - Practical mining experience is advantageous. - Interest in and ability to work in an interdisciplinary and multilingual environment. - Good English language skills, spoken and written. Postdoctoral Position in Urban Water Engineering

For the full version of the advertisement, see Environmentally Safe Maintenance Operations of Urban Drainage Infrastructures Do you want to develop your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is a natural part of the work? With us, you will collaborate with dedicated colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy strong opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. The Urban Water Engineering research group seeks a driven and committed postdoc with a focus on how sustainable management of stormwater sediments can contribute to improved water quality. Take the opportunity to join one of the leading stormwater research groups in the world with an international, creative and dynamic environment and close cooperation with the industry and universities worldwide. The group consists of about 50 members including senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and about 20 doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. Subject Description Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (storm drains, drinking water supply and wastewater) with respect to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. The research aims to encourage a strong economy, clean environment and the wise use of resources, while preserving the public's health and safety. Project Description Stormwater carries a variety of pollutants from urban environments, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters. Urban drainage infrastructures such as gully pots and stormwater ponds are critical to mitigate these challenges. Over time, the accumulation of sediments and associated contaminants in these infrastructures lead to an impaired performance and thus requiring routine and environmentally safe maintenance operations. As the use of urban drainage infrastructures expands, the mass of sediments and associated contaminants retained in such infrastructure will continue to grow, amplifying both management challenges and potential environmental risks. Fully characterising these challenges within a wider technical and socio-economic context is essential to ensure that the accumulation of sediments prevents–rather than simply defers– their discharge to coastal environments. Addressing this need is the central aim of this project, responding directly to the needs of municipalities, authorities and practitioners for evidence-based tools, clear governance and legal guidance, environmentally responsible maintenance methods and sustainable financial models, and contributes to reducing land-based pressures on coastal and marine environments through system-level transformation. The work within the project includes the evaluation and development of technical solutions for operation and maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures as well as detailed characterisation of the waste streams generated from maintenance operations. Within this project, the postdoc will be involved in collaboration with stakeholders in the water and wastewater industry and will communicate results both with the industry and international researchers through well-established competence network. Duties As a Postdoc you independently plan and carry out your research work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the participation in Swedish and international conferences. You may also have the opportunity to teach in undergraduate courses and administrative tasks may be included (up to 20% of fulltime). You will have two supervisors who will support you. The research work for this project will specifically include experimental work. Qualifications In order to be eligible for employment as postdoc you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in the field of water and environment, natural resources engineering, civil engineering or environmental chemistry. A doctoral degree awarded no more than three years before the application deadline provides a useful qualification. Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds, for example, different types of statutory leave of absence. The applicant should have the ability to work independently and take own initiative as well as being able to independently address new research areas. Good oral and written skills in English are essential to facilitate presentation of research outcomes in international conferences and scientific papers. It is advantageous if you have knowledge and experience of: - stormwater management, urban pollution sources and environmental behaviour of pollutants - experience of sampling, analytical chemistry, laboratory work and statistics as well as working with large environmental measurement data sets Swedish/Scandinavian language skills are beneficial, as they will facilitate communication with stakeholders and participation in teaching activities. Having a driver's license is meritorious, as it will facilitate research work. Applicants should provide contact details to minimum two reference persons upon request. Further Information Full-time fixed term employment for two years with placement in Urban Water Engineering. Placement: Luleå. Starting: Autumn 2026. Postdoctoral Researcher in Water and Sanitation Engineering

Postdoctoral Researcher in Water and Sanitation Engineering – Environmentally Safe Maintenance Operations of Urban Stormwater Infrastructure Do you want to develop your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is a given? With us, you'll work with engaged colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and excellent opportunities to attract external funding. You'll have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. The research subject Water and Sanitation Engineering at the Department of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, is seeking a driven and engaged postdoctoral researcher focused on how sustainable sediment management from stormwater can contribute to improved water quality. Take the opportunity to join one of the world's leading stormwater research groups with an international, creative, and dynamic environment in close collaboration with the industry and universities worldwide. The Water and Sanitation Engineering research group has a strong position in research and education within urban water systems, primarily in the areas of stormwater and wastewater systems. The group includes approximately 50 people consisting of several senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors, and approximately 20 doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. The group's overall goal is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems. For more information, see http://www.ltu.se/vatten Research Area Description Water and Sanitation Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (stormwater, drinking water, and wastewater) with respect to collection, transport, and treatment as well as organization/planning. The research aims at good economic and environmental outcomes, wise resource utilization, and citizen safety and health. Project Description Stormwater transports a variety of pollutants from urban environments, which presents major challenges for the protection of surface waters. Urban stormwater facilities such as stormwater inlets and ponds are important for addressing these challenges. Over time, the accumulation of sediment and associated contaminants in these facilities leads to impaired function, creating the need for regular and environmentally safe maintenance operations. As the use of urban stormwater facilities increases, the amount of sediment and associated contaminants retained in these systems will continue to grow, which reinforces both management challenges and potential environmental risks. Fully characterizing these challenges within a broader technical and socioeconomic context is crucial to ensure that sediment accumulation prevents—rather than merely delays—discharges to coastal environments. Meeting this need is the project's central objective and directly addresses municipalities', authorities', and practitioners' needs for evidence-based tools, clear governance and legal guidance, environmentally sustainable maintenance methods, and long-term sustainable financing models. The project thus contributes to reducing land-based impacts on coastal and marine environments through a system-wide transformation. Work within the project includes evaluation and development of technical solutions for operation and maintenance of urban stormwater facilities as well as detailed characterization of waste streams generated by maintenance operations. Within the project, the postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with municipalities and international research partners and communicate results to both industry and international researchers through LTU's well-established competence networks. Duties The duties of a postdoctoral researcher are varied. You work independently planning and conducting your studies as well as writing scientific articles, in collaboration with industry and other project partners. In between, you participate in seminars and conferences both in Sweden and internationally. Qualifications To be eligible for employment, a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign qualification in Water and Sanitation Engineering, Water Resources, Civil Engineering, or something deemed equivalent is required. It is meritorious if your degree was completed no more than three years before the final application deadline for this position. If there are special reasons, a doctoral degree completed earlier may be considered, for example due to various types of statutory leave. The applicant needs to have the ability to work independently, take initiative, and independently initiate new research areas. Knowledge of English is necessary to present research results at international conferences and in scientific publications. It is meritorious if you have knowledge and experience in: Stormwater management, urban pollution sources, and contaminants' environmental behavior Experience with sampling, analytical chemistry, laboratory work, and statistics as well as working with large environmentally related measurement datasets Knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language is meritorious, as it facilitates communication with stakeholders and participation in teaching activities. Postdoctoral Researcher in Water and Wastewater Engineering

Data-driven understanding and predictive modeling of sediment accumulation in urban stormwater infrastructures Would you like to develop your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is self-evident? With us, you will work with engaged colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and excellent opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. The Water and Wastewater Engineering research group at the Department of Civil Engineering and Natural Resources at Luleå University of Technology is seeking a driven and engaged postdoctoral researcher focused on data-driven monitoring and predictive modeling of sediment accumulation in urban stormwater infrastructures to support evidence-based maintenance that contributes to improved water quality and enhanced urban resilience during heavy rainfall events. Take the opportunity to be part of one of the world's leading stormwater research groups with an international, creative, and dynamic environment in close collaboration with industry and universities worldwide. The Water and Wastewater Engineering research group holds a strong position in research and education within urban water systems, primarily in the areas of stormwater and wastewater systems. The group comprises approximately 50 people including senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors, and around 20 doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. The group's overall goal is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems. For more information see http://www.ltu.se/vatten Research Area Description Water and Wastewater Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (stormwater, drinking water, and wastewater) with regard to collection, transport and treatment as well as organization/planning. The research aims at good societal economy and environment, wise resource utilization, and public safety and health. Project Description Stormwater transports a broad spectrum of pollutants from urban environments to receiving waters, presenting major challenges for the protection of surface water and coastal ecosystems. Urban stormwater facilities, such as stormwater catch basins and detention ponds, play an important role by retaining sediment and associated pollutants. However, their function depends on effective operation and maintenance, which in practice is often reactive or based on fixed intervals, despite large spatial and temporal variations in sediment accumulation. This project is part of a larger interdisciplinary research initiative aimed at enabling a transition toward more data-driven and environmentally sustainable maintenance of urban stormwater facilities. The overarching goal is to reduce pollutant loads to coastal and marine environments and to support sustainable urban water management. The research project will focus on developing a data-driven understanding of sediment accumulation processes in urban stormwater facilities. This includes long-term monitoring using high-resolution sensors to capture sediment dynamics during rainfall events and across different seasons. Based on these data, predictive models will be developed to estimate sediment accumulation and the remaining functionality of the facilities. The results will support more efficient maintenance strategies by identifying when and where maintenance efforts are needed to maximize environmental performance and operational efficiency. Within the project, the postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with municipalities and international research partners and communicate results to both industry and international researchers through LTU's well-established competence networks. Job Responsibilities The postdoctoral researcher's duties are varied. You will work independently to plan and conduct your research and write scientific articles in collaboration with industry and other project partners. Between these activities, you will participate in seminars and conferences both in Sweden and internationally. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to try your hand at teaching and administrative duties may also occur (up to 20% of full-time). You will have two supervisors to support you. Qualifications To be eligible for employment, a PhD degree or equivalent foreign degree in Water and Wastewater Engineering, Water Resources, Civil Engineering, or other field deemed equivalent is required. It is meritorious if your degree was obtained no more than three years before the final application deadline for this position. If there are special circumstances, a PhD degree obtained earlier may be considered, for example due to various types of statutory leave. The applicant needs to have the ability to work independently, take initiative, and independently begin new research areas. Knowledge of English is necessary to present research results at international conferences and in scientific publications. It is meritorious if you have knowledge and experience in: Stormwater management, Bayesian statistics, sediment transport processes, hydraulics/hydrology, and thermodynamics (e.g., heat transfer processes) Sensor-based monitoring, field sampling, machine learning, programming, and working with large environmental measurement datasets Knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language is meritorious, as it facilitates communication with stakeholders and participation in teaching activities. Possession of a driver's license is also meritorious, as it facilitates research work. You must be able to provide contact information for two references upon request. Information This is a full-time position for two years. Place of work is Luleå. Expected start date: Fall 2026. For further information, please contact postdoctoral researcher Haoyu Wei 0920-491728, mailto:[email protected] Union Representatives SACO-S Diana Chroneer, 0920-49 2037 mailto:[email protected] OFR-S Marika Vesterberg, 0920-49 1721 mailto:[email protected] Application We prefer that you apply for the position using the application button below, attaching a cover letter as well as a CV/list of qualifications and copies of verified diplomas.
