PhD Student in Condensed Matter Theory

Project Description Doctoral Field: Physics Egor Babaev's group at the Department of Physics at KTH has an opening for a PhD student in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics. The group conducts a broad spectrum of research using analytical and numerical methods, ranging from effective field theory, topological systems, topological solitons, and statistical mechanical descriptions of phase transitions to modern microscopic quantum many-body techniques. One of our research areas is the emerging field of new types of order: In recent years, experimental discoveries have been made that have revised half-century-old paradigms: the discovery of electron quartet condensates and topological defects that carry an arbitrary fraction of magnetic flux quantum. The discovery has opened up many fundamental questions about the nature of this new state of matter and its possible applications. Other areas of study include new symmetry-breaking quantum states and topological ordered states, unconventional phase transitions, and the use of newly developed techniques such as diagrammatic Monte Carlo to understand other unsolved problems. Collaboration with international theoretical and experimental research groups involved in the project is encouraged. Supervision: Professor Egor Babaev is proposed to supervise the PhD student. The decision will be made at admission. Eligibility for Admission To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility: completed a degree at advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at advanced level, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. PhD Student in Computer Vision for Measuring Breathing and Heart Rate from Video

PhD Student in Remote Fault Attacks on Cryptographic Algorithms

Project Description Research Education Subject: Information and Communication Technology Currently, there are no effective methods to protect implementations of cryptographic algorithms against fault attacks, where an attacker intentionally injects faults into cryptographic computations to extract sensitive information. This project aims to address this important open problem, with particular focus on remote attacks. We intend to study how fault attacks affect the security of cryptographic implementations from both an offensive and defensive perspective. By considering mathematical and electrical engineering problems in a unified context, the project is expected to contribute to the development of cryptographic implementations where resilience to fault attacks is built in at the design stage, rather than handled retroactively when a vulnerability is discovered. Selected candidates are expected to investigate how advanced machine learning techniques can be used to improve both the analysis and mitigation of fault attacks. The insights obtained will be used to develop new methods for vulnerability assessment and design countermeasures against fault attacks, together with supporting tools. The work will be carried out in the Hardware Security Group at KTH, which currently includes five PhD students. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council. Supervision: Prof. Elena Dubrova and Prof. Carl-Mikael Zetterling Eligibility for Admission To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), basic eligibility is required: - a degree at advanced level, or - completion of course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or - acquisition in some other way within or outside the country of essentially equivalent knowledge. Special eligibility requirements include knowledge of cryptographic algorithms, expertise in fault attacks and side-channel attacks, experience with embedded systems, and practical skills in machine learning, including knowledge of fundamental tools and platforms such as TensorFlow and others. In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement of English equivalent to English B/6. Selection To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. The selection assesses the ability to: - independently advance your work, - collaborate with others, - maintain a professional approach, - analyze and work with complex issues, and - communicate research results effectively in writing and through presentations. Applicants who have completed a course in hardware security as part of their academic curriculum will be prioritized. Applicants whose bachelor's/master's thesis was conducted in the field of hardware security will be prioritized. Applicants with published articles in top-ranked hardware security journals, conferences, or workshops will be prioritized. After the eligibility requirements, considerable weight will be placed on personal qualities. Target Degree: Doctor's Degree Information on Admission and Employment Only those admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD students. PhD Student in Quantum Information Theory

Project Description Graduate Research Subject: Electrical and Systems Engineering The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) and addresses fundamental questions in quantum information science, with applications in quantum communication, quantum computing, and other forms of quantum information processing. The overarching goal is to establish the ultimate limits on what resources are required and what performance can be achieved in such tasks, as well as to develop explicit protocols that achieve or approach these limits. A central challenge is to express these limits in mathematically tractable and computationally accessible forms. Ideas and methods from quantum Shannon theory will be particularly useful, together with tools from entanglement theory and the broader mathematical foundations of quantum information. The project will investigate fundamental information-theoretic quantities, including entropy, mutual information, channel capacities, and various measures of entanglement, as well as how these behave when quantum systems or information processing resources are combined. Questions about additivity and non-additivity form an important part of this broader research program. PhD Student in Characterization of Electrochemical Interfaces

Project Description Doctoral Field: Chemistry This PhD project investigates the behavior of electrolytes in nanoporous electrodes, with particular emphasis on how pore size, morphology, and surface chemistry govern ion trapping and charge storage. A central goal is to distinguish and quantify the contributions from ions inside the pores versus ions outside the pores, to provide molecular insight into ion–electrode interactions. The project focuses on ionic liquid electrolytes as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems. You will study ion transport during charging and discharging in batteries and supercapacitors using advanced NMR methods, complemented by targeted computational modeling. This integrated approach enables identification of the dominant ion transport mechanisms in carbon-based electrodes and supports the development of robust structure–property relationships for high-performance electrochemical components. PhD Student in Experimental Fluid Mechanics and Complex Films

Project Description Research Education Subject: Engineering Mechanics FLOW is a strong research environment with researchers conducting both basic and applied research in fluid mechanics at the Department of Engineering Mechanics. We are seeking a PhD student with an experimental focus in fluid mechanics for the Fluids and Surfaces group within FLOW. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated candidate to contribute to a cutting-edge research project, funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The project aims to increase understanding of how complex films, including biological and living films, interact with surrounding fluid flows. Such films occur extensively both in nature and in technical applications, from mucus in the lungs to biofilms on medical devices and ship hulls. When exposed to shear and potentially time-varying flows, the films can deform into complex shapes, exhibit unusual material properties, and evolve over time. Thus, they constitute a dynamic and continuously changing boundary for the flow. Simultaneously, the films affect the overlying flow and can alter both friction drag and transport and exchange of various substances. Despite their significance, the coupled interaction between complex films and fluid flows remains poorly understood. This limits our ability to predict and control these systems and presents significant challenges in medical, industrial, and geophysical applications. In this project, the PhD student will work with and further develop a unique experimental platform for studying complex films under controlled yet complex flow conditions. The experimental work will be complemented with continuum modeling of complex materials, data-driven methods, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Supervisor: Shervin Bagheri is proposed to supervise the PhD student. A decision will be made upon admission. Eligibility for Admission To be admitted to doctoral studies (chapter 7, section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility: completed a degree at an advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at an advanced level, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country.
