Project Description Research Education Subject: Electrical and Systems Engineering This project addresses information and coding-theoretic methods for analyzing and improving the robustness and efficiency of federated machine learning methods in scenarios with limited communication bandwidth and unreliable nodes. The project is funded by KTH as part of a joint initiative to strengthen relations between KTH and certain partner universities. The project is conducted in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Lyngby, Denmark. The doctoral candidate will be supervised by two advisors at KTH and two advisors at DTU. Mobility is a requirement for the doctoral candidate; the candidate must spend a total of at least one year at our partner university DTU. However, this period does not need to be continuous and will be planned in consultation between the candidate and the advisors. Admission Requirements To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), applicants must meet basic eligibility requirements: have completed an advanced-level degree, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at an advanced level, or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. Applicants should have a strong background in theoretical analysis of stochastic phenomena, as well as general skills in and demonstrated talent for mathematical analysis of technical systems. In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6. Selection Process To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. When selecting applicants, the following abilities are assessed: to independently advance your work, to collaborate with others, to maintain a professional approach, and to analyze and work with complex issues. Previous knowledge in information and coding theory is meritorious. After the eligibility requirements are verified, significant weight will be placed on personal qualities. Degree Objective: Doctoral Degree Information on Admission and Employment Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as a doctoral candidate. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral-level education for four years. An employed doctoral candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks in, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral candidate is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies to be concluded with a Licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral-level education for two years.
