Project Description Research Subject: Physics The PhD student will conduct research in X-ray astronomy, focusing on studies of radiation from supernovae and supernova remnants. The project will include analysis of observational data, including searching and analyzing large datasets, to investigate scientific questions such as the properties of compact objects formed in supernovae. The PhD student will work with observations from major X-ray telescopes (e.g., XMM-Newton and Chandra), complemented with multi-wavelength data from other instruments and observatories. The PhD student will be part of Professor Josefin Larsson's research group, providing opportunities for collaboration within related projects, such as studies of supernova remnants at infrared and optical wavelengths. Astrophysics research at KTH also includes development of instrumentation for X-ray astronomy and studies of gamma-ray bursts (https://www.physics.kth.se/particle-physics-as). These activities are part of the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics (OKC) at AlbaNova University Centre (https://www.okc.albanova.se), which offers an international research environment with a large group of researchers working on supernovae. The Centre offers a wide range of activities, seminars, and collaborations that contribute to a dynamic research environment. Supervision: Professor Josefin Larsson is proposed to supervise the PhD student. Final decision will be made upon admission. Admission Requirements To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), applicants must have general eligibility: completed a degree at an advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at an advanced level, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. General eligibility must be achieved in one of the subjects of physics or astronomy. In addition to the above, there is a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6. Selection To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to: independently drive your work forward, collaborate with others, maintain a professional approach, and analyze and work with complex issues. The following experience and knowledge are particularly meritorious: Master's thesis in astronomy, experience with analysis of astronomical observations, excellent ability to communicate in writing and orally in English. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral level education for four years. An employed PhD student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, teaching and administration. A new PhD student employment is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
