PhD Student in Medical Science

Would you like to work with clinical research, supported by competent and pleasant colleagues in an international environment? Would you like an employer that invests in sustainable employee partnerships and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a position as a PhD student in Medical Science at Uppsala University. The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical department with approximately 250 employees and over 900 individuals affiliated through Akademiska Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in various areas. Research is conducted in close connection with clinical operations at Akademiska Hospital and includes both basic studies on disease causes as well as development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More about the department's activities can be found at https://www.uu.se/institution/medicinska-vetenskaper/ The position is placed in the Clinical Chemistry research group, which consists of several independent researchers with projects in laboratory diagnostics and related areas. Within the group, extracellular vesicles as biomarkers constitute a separate research line, with studies in hemostasis, vascular disease, and inflammation. The current project is conducted in collaboration with clinical and preclinical researchers at the Karolinska Institute, Danderyd Hospital, and Livio Fertility Center. Duties Assisted reproduction (IVF) is associated with an increased risk of blood clots during early pregnancy, but the mechanisms behind this remain unclear and there are no laboratory methods to assess risk in individual patients. Extracellular vesicles (EV) are nano-sized particles released from body cells, carry procoagulant properties, and participate in reproductive signaling. They may therefore be the missing link between reproduction and hemostasis in current understanding. The project examines how EVs change during IVF treatment, their relationship to hemostatic activation and clinical outcomes, and whether they can be used as biomarkers. Analyses are performed using existing longitudinal biobank material and in a prospective cohort. The PhD student will be part of the national research school BioLabX (Biomedical Analysts for Excellence), which educates future teachers and researchers in healthcare and medical science. The work is primarily laboratory-based and builds on immunological methods and high-sensitivity flow cytometry for characterization of extracellular vesicles at the individual vesicle level. The work includes handling of clinical samples from biobank and prospective collection, setup and validation of antibody panels, analytical quality assurance, and integration of EV data with hemostasis measurements and clinical outcome data. The position includes higher education pedagogy training as well as teaching and mentoring of students in biomedical laboratory science programs at Uppsala University, corresponding to a maximum of 20 percent of full-time. Qualification Requirements To be eligible for admission to doctoral level studies, an applicant must have completed an advanced level degree, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level, or otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country. Applicants are expected to have a 3-year undergraduate degree from biomedical analyst education and a master's degree corresponding to 60 higher education credits at advanced level in a relevant field (biomedical laboratory science, medicine, biomedicine, pharmacy, medical science, or equivalent). We are looking for a motivated candidate with interest in biomedical laboratory science, extracellular vesicles, and hemostasis. Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills such as communication and collaboration abilities. Applicants must have good knowledge of Swedish and English in speech and writing. You are expected to be able to work independently but also collaborate with other group members. The applicant is expected to actively participate in teaching and mentoring of students corresponding to a maximum of 20% of full-time. Applicants should have experience with basic methods in biomedical laboratory science and immunology, as well as sample handling and preanalytical handling of clinical samples. Desirable/Meriting Experience Experience with flow cytometry is meriting, as is work with extracellular vesicles, hemostasis, and coagulation. Experience with clinical studies is meriting, as is documented participation in teaching. Great weight is placed on personal suitability. The application should contain a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, CV, copies of diplomas and identification, and any translations thereof. If available, also submit letters of recommendation or contact information for previous research supervisors. Provisions for PhD students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§ 1-7 and in the university's rules and guidelines. About the Position The position is time-limited, according to HF Chapter 5 § 7. Full-time. Start date by agreement. Location: Uppsala. Nurse for the Emergency Department for Infectious Diseases

Department of Infectious Diseases We are Akademiska Hospital – one of Sweden's leading university hospitals. As a regional hospital and provider of highly specialized care, we serve healthcare to two million people in central Sweden. Here, something is always happening – a new life is born, a grandmother is operated on, a colleague is celebrated as a hero. With us, you will experience both challenging trials and fantastic moments, in a strong community with colleagues. Welcome with your application! Our Operations At the emergency department for infectious diseases, we receive adult patients with serious infections. This can involve acute conditions requiring immediate care, but also complicated infections where investigation and sometimes prolonged treatment may be necessary. Our emergency department is open between 07:30 – 21:30 every day of the week. The breadth and variety of patients we care for makes the work interesting and enjoyable. Many of the diagnoses we handle are common in society, such as respiratory tract infections, wound infections, sepsis, or meningitis, while other infections are rarer, such as tropical medicine diseases. As a patient, you can seek care directly through our emergency intake, but you can also be referred here or arrive by ambulance transport. We examine, investigate, and treat our patients during their visits with us. The work pace is often high and patient flow can sometimes be intensive, making the work days content-rich. The knowledge you gain with us is valuable and useful. Having experience in infectious disease nursing is beneficial in most specialties as a nurse, and is an excellent credential for those who dream of working internationally. The field of infectious disease nursing is constantly facing new challenges with outbreaks of both domestic and global infections. We are therefore looking for someone who has a genuine interest in infectious disease nursing and who wants to help develop our operations to meet both today's and future care needs. Our goal is that with our combined expertise and experience, we will offer our patients world-class care! Your Assignment As a nurse at the emergency department for infectious diseases, you work in a team together with doctors, nurses, and nursing assistants. The nurse's responsibility is to manage patient flow and logistics around the patient, so that acute care becomes person-centered and patient-safe. This includes triage, specimen collection, and prioritization of patients. You also have a key role in the continued handling of the patient focused on investigation, diagnostics, and treatment. The work involves extensive patient contact and requires a developed understanding of the patient's care needs. You become the patient's security and support in a situation that can be stressful for both the sick person and their relatives. Most of our patients are cared for at the infectious disease clinic for a limited time, but some come to us for treatment over many years, for long-term or recurring infections. Our nurses are offered the opportunity to rotate toward our day care unit where we receive patients for scheduled nurse visits for OPAT/outpatient antibiotic therapy, wound care, vaccination, and immunodeficiency treatment. Your Qualifications You are a licensed nurse with particular interest in acute and infectious disease nursing, or alternatively a specialist nurse in infectious disease nursing. We would like you to have a few years of experience in the profession, but it is not a requirement. It is meritorious if you have previous experience working in an emergency department or in infectious disease nursing. Your Competencies You are comfortable working in an acute flow, with constantly new patient contacts. You have the ability to remain calm in acute situations and are able to prioritize your work tasks when there is high workload. You are accustomed to working independently, but enjoy being part of a team. We place great emphasis on personal qualities and the desire to develop through continuous learning. What We Offer Our goal is that you as an employee with us will be satisfied, develop, and feel joy in your work. Here you will work in a stable work group with experienced colleagues, several of whom are specialist-trained. We apply healthy working hours and work actively to adapt the schedule to individual wishes and needs as much as possible. The position includes work on evenings and weekends. We hire on an ongoing basis, so do not hesitate to submit your application.
