Superintendent for the Institute for Police Work
Do you want to help build police education at Uppsala University? We are now recruiting a superintendent who, together with colleagues at Uppsala University and the Police Authority, will be involved in developing the newly established Superintendent's Office for Police Work. The work will be both exciting and challenging, and will require flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit. The new superintendent's office is part of the Institute for Police Work which, together with the Faculty of Law, forms the Faculty of Law, which is Northern Europe's oldest law faculty and existed when the university was founded in 1477. Job Responsibilities As superintendent, you have a key role in ensuring that operations at the Superintendent's Office for Police Work function effectively, safely and with good quality, both in daily work and from a long-term perspective. You are responsible for creating structure, coordination and good conditions in an operation characterized by collaboration between different actors. As superintendent, you are responsible for leading and coordinating work within the superintendent function and create good conditions for police education. The position includes management of employees within the superintendent's office for police work as well as close collaboration with employees at the Police Authority. You work closely with both the Police Authority and various functions within Uppsala University, where collaboration and clear communication are central. We are looking for a PhD student who wants to conduct world-class research on glioblastoma: a brain tumor whose mortality is not driven by spread to other organs, but by its ability to continuously change biological character and invade brain tissue. Responsibilities The fundamental problem we want to solve is to understand how cells in a brain tumor choose to change character — and how we can use that knowledge to actively direct them toward more treatment-sensitive states. We call this state steering. Unlike conventional cancer therapy, which aims to kill tumor cells with broad-acting therapies, state steering aims to reprogram them. Through reprogramming, a range of effects are achieved, such as reduced invasion, increased sensitivity to radiation, or senescence. You will work with two main types of data collected as part of the strategic research center CNS×3: large-scale intervention experiments, where we systematically map how genetic and pharmacological perturbations affect tumor cell plasticity, and image-based tracking data, where individual tumor cells are monitored in real time as they migrate through brain tissue. The goal is to build AI models that combine these data sources and can predict how a given treatment affects tumor behavior and outcomes. Existing tools such as hidden Markov models (HMM), which are used to analyze individual cell movements in image data, are special cases of this framework. The new contribution, rewire-seq, is a more general and data-scalable version that combines large-scale intervention experiments with image-based cell tracking to provide a coherent picture of tumor dynamics. A key component of the project is cyclic experimentation: the model's predictions directly guide the choice of the next experiment, and results are fed back into the model — a process that makes the research progressively more precise. You will work closely with experimental colleagues in a team-based environment and together transform biological questions into computational solutions with clinical relevance. Qualification Requirements Eligible for education at the research level is a person who has - completed a degree at advanced level in computational biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, applied mathematics, biophysics, molecular biology, or similar, or - completed at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or - acquired in essence equivalent knowledge in some other way. The project requires solid understanding of the mathematics underlying AI and machine learning — for example linear algebra, probability theory and statistical inference. You should have concrete experience with demanding data analysis, for example in genomics, image analysis or biochemical screening data. The project builds on close collaboration with researchers at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology (IGP) at Uppsala University as well as SciLifeLab, the national infrastructure for life science. Project Description Immunotherapy has become a life-saving option for patients with advanced cancer. However, only a minority of patients develop a sustained response. Many researchers are working to better understand the complexity of anti-cancer immunity and develop diagnostic methods that accurately predict treatment benefit and enable personalized cancer treatment planning. Modern AI-based methods are essential to advance this research frontier. This project is an important part of our broader initiative to develop and apply innovative, interpretable data-driven analysis methods to significantly increase our understanding of how immune cell interactions affect the cancer microenvironment. We will apply these analysis methods to high-information multimodal microscopy data and develop techniques to integrate correlated structural and molecular analysis in three-dimensional tissue space. This integration will enable improved prediction of disease progression and response to specific treatments. Duties The doctoral student will primarily focus on their own research training. Other work at the department, including teaching and administrative duties, may be included within the scope of employment (max 20%). Qualification Requirements Basic eligibility is held by those who: have completed a degree at advanced level in computer science, image analysis and machine learning, technical physics, data analysis, applied mathematics, molecular biotechnology, or a related field, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level including an independent work of at least 15 higher education credits, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. The position is linked to the research program MÅSTE, Multidisciplinary Commitments for Sweden's Gen IV Technology and Expertise, which addresses key scientific and technical challenges for future Gen IV reactor systems. We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in nuclear engineering, reactor physics, nuclear physics, computational physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning
At the Department of Systems and Control, we develop both theory and concrete tools for designing systems that learn, reason, and act in the real world based on a seamless combination of data, mathematical models, and algorithms. Our research integrates expertise from machine learning, optimization, control theory, and applied mathematics, spanning diverse application areas such as medicine, energy systems, biomedical systems, neuroscience, and security. The department maintains a broad network of long-standing international collaborators worldwide, including University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London, University of Sydney, University of Newcastle, and Aalto University. Responsibilities This project focuses on developing, analyzing, and applying new methods in reinforcement learning and model predictive control (MPC), both stochastic and deterministic formulations. The emphasis will be on developing methods for robust reinforcement learning and/or MPC formulations. We are particularly interested in environments where the cost or reward function is non-ergodic. In these situations, expected costs/rewards do not capture the behavior of individual rollouts, requiring new designs. We will develop and analyze generally applicable algorithms and models together with our collaborators. The postdoctoral researcher will be jointly supervised by Assistant Professor Dominik Baumann (Aalto University) and, regarding MPC aspects, we will collaborate with Assistant Professor Johannes Köhler at Imperial College London. SEMSANS uses polarized neutrons to encode small scattering angles without the need for a well-collimated neutron beam, measures autocorrelation functions over mesoscopic length scales, and investigates structural properties ranging from the micrometer to the nanometer range. The method is based on modulation of the neutron beam's polarization using a pair of magnetic Wollaston prisms – superconducting triangular field regions – placed upstream of the sample. The postdoctoral researcher will work on the design and implementation of the Wollaston prisms and a "spin exchange optically pumped" (SEOP) neutron spin analyzer. Both will be developed at a test instrument at ISIS. Once the new features are implemented, they will be utilized on the Larmor and IMAT instruments at ISIS. When ESS becomes available with its new long neutron pulses, the method will be integrated and used on the imaging instrument ODIN and the SANS instrument SKADI, both at ESS. This will enable unique studies of vortex lattices in intermediate mixed superconductors, characterization of vesicles in model cell systems, and resolution of hierarchical cellulose microstructures in collaboration with project partners. The goal is to develop methods that enable faster and more reliable exploration of large design spaces in core and fuel optimization. Welcome to apply for a position as a doctoral researcher at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University. The doctoral researcher will be placed in the Secure Learning and Control Laboratory, an interdisciplinary research group conducting fundamental and applied research at the intersection of cybersecurity, control theory, and machine learning. Duties The doctoral researcher will primarily focus on their own doctoral education. Other duties at the department, including teaching and administrative work, may be included within the scope of employment (max 20%). In addition, the duties include the following: Interdisciplinary research on security for cyber-physical systems, with focus on secure control under uncertainty and in the presence of realistic adversaries. Publication of scientific results in leading scientific journals and at prominent international conferences. Contribution to network-wide activities and completion of (transnational) academic and/or industrial research visits within Europe. Qualification Requirements Basic eligibility for doctoral education is held by those who: have completed a degree at an advanced level in electrical engineering, engineering physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at an advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. For specific eligibility requirements, see the course plan for the subject. In addition, the following are required: Very good academic results from previous higher education. Good knowledge of control systems and system theory. Good programming experience (e.g., in C, C++, Python, Julia, or Matlab). High quality of the advanced-level thesis work (or equivalent) or other independent written work. Very good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English. Personal qualities such as creativity, attention to detail, and/or a structured problem-solving approach. To be eligible as a doctoral researcher within MSCA (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions), you must not have completed a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment and must not be enrolled in a doctoral program. MSCA's mobility rule means that applicants must not have been resident or had their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country where the host organization is located (Sweden) for more than 12 months during the three years immediately preceding the recruitment date. Desired/Meritorious Qualifications Documented analytical skills of high quality. Personal qualities such as initiative, ability to cooperate, and ability to communicate effectively with both international and national project partners, as well as the ability to work both independently and in teams. Meritorious are knowledge in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, cybersecurity, or computer systems. Provisions for doctoral researchers are found in the Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chapter §§ 1-7 as well as in the university's rules and guidelines. Advanced-level thesis work (or a draft if the work is not yet completed) and/or another self-produced technical or scientific text that demonstrates the applicant's research and analytical capabilities. Applicants may also attach up to two letters of recommendation. About the Employment The employment is time-limited, according to HE 5 Chapter § 7. The position is full-time. Start date: September 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala Doctoral researchers employed through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie program receive salary in accordance with the program's rules for doctoral researchers during the grant period (36 months). This means that the gross salary (i.e., after deduction for employer contributions but including income tax) amounts to approximately 37,000 SEK per month, depending on exchange rates (excluding any possible family allowance). The employee's national and local taxes will be deducted from this gross salary before the net salary is paid to the doctoral researcher. At the end of the project, an additional salary payment may be made if the average exchange rate during the entire project is higher than the calculated exchange rate. During the remainder of your studies, you will be employed on a regular doctoral contract, with salary according to the agreed salary scale for doctoral researchers plus a salary supplement of 1,800 SEK/month.
