Welcome to apply for a position as a doctoral researcher at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University. The doctoral researcher will be placed in the Secure Learning and Control Laboratory, an interdisciplinary research group conducting fundamental and applied research at the intersection of cybersecurity, control theory, and machine learning. Duties The doctoral researcher will primarily focus on their own doctoral education. Other duties at the department, including teaching and administrative work, may be included within the scope of employment (max 20%). In addition, the duties include the following: Interdisciplinary research on security for cyber-physical systems, with focus on secure control under uncertainty and in the presence of realistic adversaries. Publication of scientific results in leading scientific journals and at prominent international conferences. Contribution to network-wide activities and completion of (transnational) academic and/or industrial research visits within Europe. Qualification Requirements Basic eligibility for doctoral education is held by those who: have completed a degree at an advanced level in electrical engineering, engineering physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at an advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. For specific eligibility requirements, see the course plan for the subject. In addition, the following are required: Very good academic results from previous higher education. Good knowledge of control systems and system theory. Good programming experience (e.g., in C, C++, Python, Julia, or Matlab). High quality of the advanced-level thesis work (or equivalent) or other independent written work. Very good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English. Personal qualities such as creativity, attention to detail, and/or a structured problem-solving approach. To be eligible as a doctoral researcher within MSCA (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions), you must not have completed a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment and must not be enrolled in a doctoral program. MSCA's mobility rule means that applicants must not have been resident or had their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country where the host organization is located (Sweden) for more than 12 months during the three years immediately preceding the recruitment date. Desired/Meritorious Qualifications Documented analytical skills of high quality. Personal qualities such as initiative, ability to cooperate, and ability to communicate effectively with both international and national project partners, as well as the ability to work both independently and in teams. Meritorious are knowledge in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, cybersecurity, or computer systems. Provisions for doctoral researchers are found in the Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chapter §§ 1-7 as well as in the university's rules and guidelines. The letter must contain a section titled "Suitability for this position," in which the applicant briefly describes how their background, knowledge, and experience meet the requirements and evaluation criteria. Curriculum vitae (CV). Copies of degree certificates and transcripts, including grades (with translation to English or Swedish if the original documents are in another language). Advanced-level thesis work (or a draft if the work is not yet completed) and/or another self-produced technical or scientific text that demonstrates the applicant's research and analytical capabilities. Applicants may also attach up to two letters of recommendation. About the Employment The employment is time-limited, according to HE 5 Chapter § 7. The position is full-time. Start date: September 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala Doctoral researchers employed through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie program receive salary in accordance with the program's rules for doctoral researchers during the grant period (36 months). This means that the gross salary (i.e., after deduction for employer contributions but including income tax) amounts to approximately 37,000 SEK per month, depending on exchange rates (excluding any possible family allowance). The employee's national and local taxes will be deducted from this gross salary before the net salary is paid to the doctoral researcher. At the end of the project, an additional salary payment may be made if the average exchange rate during the entire project is higher than the calculated exchange rate. During the remainder of your studies, you will be employed on a regular doctoral contract, with salary according to the agreed salary scale for doctoral researchers plus a salary supplement of 1,800 SEK/month.
