Postdoctoral Researcher in Stratospheric Dynamics and Turbulence
The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education spanning the atmosphere, ocean, and physics-based climate science. We offer educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and oceans that are relevant to weather and climate. The research is broad and encompasses processes ranging from the deep ocean to the upper atmosphere, and from the tropics to the poles. We utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interaction with observations. Additionally, the department develops and leads observation-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments. MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, including the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Baltic Sea Centre, and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department is an international workplace, and more than half of our staff have backgrounds outside Sweden. More information about us can be found at Meteorologiska institutionen. Project Description Turbulence is a fundamental property of atmospheric flows that transports heat and momentum across different scales. Turbulence constantly stirs the atmosphere in the planetary boundary layer near Earth's surface. In the stratosphere, turbulence is rarer, sporadic, and more difficult to predict and model. We want to understand how large-scale atmospheric processes govern when and where outbreaks of stratospheric turbulence occur. We also want to evaluate how stratospheric turbulence is represented in global atmospheric models, where the largely non-turbulent stratosphere is often modeled using equations developed for the continuously moving part of the boundary layer. Duties In your role as a postdoctoral researcher, you will have considerable freedom to design your project within the two overarching project goals and freedom to choose an observation-based, modeling-based, or combined approach. For an observation-based focus, in situ data from aircraft, rockets, and balloons will likely be used. A modeling-based focus will likely concentrate on global simulations at kilometer scale, particularly from ICON and IFS, as well as the forthcoming ERA6 reanalysis. Useful simulations are already available for analysis, meaning you will not need to run any models yourself unless you wish to develop a new modeling experiment. The research includes analysis of observations and/or model results, building and maintaining collaborations, visualization and presentation of scientific results, and authoring scientific publications. You will be part of a newly established research group at MISU and will therefore receive a high degree of individualized support. If you wish, the project leader can also provide guidance in applying for your own external funding. Qualification Requirements To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have completed a PhD or hold a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD. The degree must be completed no later than when the employment decision is made. Evaluation Criteria The PhD should be completed in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, or another relevant field. If the degree is from another area, the applicant should describe their motivation for changing fields and how their expertise can be applied to the position. It is meritorious if the PhD or equivalent has been completed at most three years before the application deadline. If there are special circumstances, an earlier completed degree may also be considered meritorious. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within labor organizations, service in civil defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or relevant practice/assignments for the field. In the appointment, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence within the field of employment. The applicant is furthermore expected to have very strong programming skills (preferably in Python), excellent spoken and written English, and an interest in working in a team and building collaborations. About the Employment The position is full-time for at least two and at most three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Employment begins 2027-01-01 or by agreement. It is possible to move up the start date, but not to postpone it. Stockholm University is committed to being a workplace free from discrimination and providing equal rights and opportunities for all. Contact Further information about the position is provided by Assistant University Lecturer Rachel Atlas, [email protected]. For information about the recruitment process and employment terms, you are welcome to contact Administrative Director Sara Engström, [email protected]. Application You apply for the position through Stockholm University's recruitment system. Attach a cover letter and CV as well as the attachments requested in the application form. As an applicant, you are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete and submitted to the university no later than the application deadline. Instructions for applicants can be found on the webpage: to apply for a position. Stockholm University contributes to the development of a sustainable democratic society through knowledge, enlightenment, and the pursuit of truth.
