Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Elements

Job Responsibilities We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who wants to contribute to the next generation of energy-efficient and sustainable transport systems through world-class research in tribology and machine elements. Friction losses in vehicle systems still account for a significant portion of global energy consumption. In heavy vehicles alone, approximately 180 billion liters of fuel are consumed annually due to friction, while the transport sector faces significantly stricter climate requirements. The EU's target of 90% reduced CO₂ emissions from new heavy vehicles by 2040 sets entirely new demands for energy efficiency and innovative technical solutions. This project focuses on an often overlooked but highly promising component: grease-lubricated wheel bearing systems. The project aims to develop and implement a systematic and realistic method for evaluating new grease formulations, using a specially designed test rig that will be designed and built specifically for this purpose. The project is conducted in close collaboration with leading actors throughout the entire value chain, including Traton/Scania, Europe's leading grease producer Axel Christiernsson, and KTH. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of academic research and industrial application, with direct potential to contribute to future sustainable transport solutions. This position is part of KTH's PROCEED initiative for research activities in Södertälje, which provides a unique opportunity for research collaboration with Traton/Scania and AstraZeneca. To enable close collaboration and cooperation, regular physical presence in Södertälje is an important part of the position. The position offers excellent opportunities to build a strong international network, develop your own research, and contribute to industry's green transition. Qualifications Requirements Completed doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made Scientific competence Documented knowledge and experience in machine elements and/or tribology Merits At the application deadline, no more than three years since the doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree was completed Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with particular focus on gender equality Collaboration skills Independence We will place great emphasis on personal qualities. We play an active role in Sweden's sustainable energy supply and contribute to Europe's transition toward a fossil-free energy system. As one of Sweden's largest landowners, we have a unique position – with both power-generating facilities and energy-intensive industry in our portfolio. This gives us great opportunities to influence, develop and think differently, not least in digitalization, AI and data-driven working methods and development of our electricity market business. Your future challenge As a Product Owner in the electricity market, you will be part of a small team with extensive internal and external contacts. You will work closely with our development teams and business operations both within the business area and other parts of the group. To optimize our electricity trading, both our electricity production and the industry's consumption need to be taken into account. This gives us access to large amounts of data and complex issues, but also the opportunity to convert analysis into real business value. You help capture needs, contribute to structuring them and follow the development of solutions that create value in our business. The role suits you who want to work at the intersection of electricity market, analysis and technology – and who wants and has the ability to develop in line with the task. Your main areas of responsibility: Support product ownership for solutions related to electricity market and data Contribute to gathering and structuring the business's needs Help formulate requirements and documentation for development teams Participate in the dialogue between operations and development Follow up and contribute to solutions that deliver business value Help develop working methods around data and analysis To succeed in the role We see that you have a degree in civil engineering in, for example, Energy Systems, Engineering Physics, Industrial Engineering or another suitable field. We will place great emphasis on the personal qualities that we believe are important to succeed in the role: Communicative and constructive in dialogue with different types of roles Trust-inspiring and attentive Business-interested and want to understand the whole picture Have an analytical and structured working approach Are genuinely interested in working data-driven and close to technology Social and collaboration-oriented Curious, responsible and willing and have the ability to develop over time You will become part of our journey toward an even more digital and analytically driven business, where your ability to see patterns, understand connections and convert data into decisions, together with your colleagues, makes a real difference. We work long-term both with the business and our employees where we with courage, commitment and responsibility develop ourselves, each other and the business. We make the forest grow and thrive Holmen's operations are based on the power that exists in the forest. The trees that grow, the water that rushes through the rivers and the wind that blows in the treetops. That is the core of Holmen, a business built on the forest's cycle and the renewable products we can create from it. Our business areas are Forestry, Energy, Wood Products, Cardboard and Paper. We are 3,500 employees who with courage, commitment and responsibility create a sustainable future. Green energy from our land Holmen produces renewable energy from wind and water.
