Lignin, a renewable by-product from the pulp and paper industry, is converted into highly porous biochar that concentrates PFAS from contaminated water. Enzyme immobilization on the biochar surface extends enzyme lifespan, improves substrate accessibility, and creates a synergistic system where adsorption brings PFAS into close contact with the enzyme's active sites. The research proceeds through three coordinated work packages: (WP1) screening of extracellular enzymes for PFAS transformation using real contaminated groundwater; (WP2) development and validation of biochar-enzyme composites; and (WP3) pilot-scale testing in lysimeter systems with contaminated water and soil from former fire training sites. The PhD student will work under the main supervision of Assistant Professor Tetyana Budnyak and co-supervision of Professor Fritjof Fagerlund. The project is funded by a Tuffo grant, with co-financing from Uppsala University. The research subject for your doctoral studies is environmental analysis. The project will involve close collaboration with industry partners and other relevant actors, as well as with academic research groups in Sweden and internationally, which gives the PhD student the opportunity to work in a broad, interdisciplinary, and collaboration-oriented research environment. Duties The main task of a PhD student is to pursue doctoral research training, which includes both participation in research projects and research training courses. The duties may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of working time. The duties will include synthesis and characterization of lignin-based biochar materials, screening and immobilization of enzymes, and evaluation of PFAS adsorption and degradation performance in laboratory column experiments and pilot-scale lysimeter systems with real PFAS-contaminated soil and groundwater. Qualification Requirements To be eligible for doctoral-level education, you must have completed a degree at advanced level in chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, materials science, environmental engineering, or related fields completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level including an independent thesis of at least 15 higher education credits, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way. The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other areas, cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. One of the guiding principles at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the activities are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala University Hospital. About the Role As Fresh Food Sales Manager, you are responsible for planning, leading, and developing the fresh food department – both strategically and operationally. You have full responsibility for operations, sales, and profitability within the departments of deli meats, cheese, meat, delicacies, and fish. You lead and develop your team through a present and coaching leadership style where you create engagement, clarity, and participation. You have personnel responsibility for the department and are responsible for monitoring key figures, sales, waste, self-inspection, and set goals. Your team consists of approximately 20 engaged employees, where five sales leaders are responsible for each area within the fresh food department. Together, you create structure, development, and a strong customer experience through close collaboration in daily operations. As part of the store's management team, you report to the store manager and participate in planning operations going forward, setting goals, and driving the store's development. You are a visible and proactive leader in daily operations who sees opportunities, takes initiative, and creates conditions for an inspiring fresh food department. With the customer in focus, you lead the team toward the store's most important goal – creating the best customer experience. You ensure that the department is attractive, well-stocked, and sales-driven, and that employees have the right conditions to provide our customers with a top-class service experience. Your Background We are looking for someone with experience from grocery retail in a leadership role. You are a confident and engaged leader with a strong business focus and a genuine interest in people, food, and sales. You are driven to develop the business and your team and have the ability to create engagement through clarity, participation, and a coaching leadership style. You work proactively, see opportunities, and take responsibility for creating results and satisfied customers.
