PhD Candidate in Hydrology - Flow and Transport in Fractured Rock
PhD Candidate in Hydrology with focus on flow and transport in fractured rock Would you like to work on groundbreaking research in hydrogeology, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Would you like an employer that invests in sustainable employee engagement and offers secure and attractive working conditions? Welcome to apply for a position as a PhD candidate at Uppsala University. The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in earth sciences. Here you will find broad expertise that contributes to solutions for important societal challenges. Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas; rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development. Our research combines natural sciences and engineering with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. At the department, over 300 people from more than 30 countries work, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. Our six research divisions: • Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Paleobiology • Wind Energy For more information see: www.uu.se/geovetenskaper The successful candidate will be part of the research program Air, Water and Landscape Science (LUVAL) (https://www.uu.se/en/department/earth-sciences/research/air-water-and-landscape-science). Duties The doctoral project will focus on uncertainty quantification in modeling flow and transport of dissolved substances in fractured rock. The work will include numerical modeling of flow and transport, analysis of uncertainties in model predictions, and development of effective methods to assess their significance for the safety of geological repositories. The methods will be demonstrated under conditions representative of a Swedish repository site, with the goal of improving the robustness and transparency of long-term safety analyses for disposal of radioactive waste. Qualification Requirements Eligible for education at the research level is the person who has a master's degree (second cycle) in hydrogeology, hydrology, rock mechanics, geophysics, geotechnics, water engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or another relevant field, has completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level including an independent work of at least 15 higher education credits, or in some other way has acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. In addition to the above eligibility requirements, you must have a solid foundation in mathematics and physics as well as experience in numerical modeling or scientific programming. Desirable/Meriting Qualifications Knowledge of flow and transport in soil and rock, fractured media, uncertainty quantification, statistical methods, or machine learning is meriting. Regulations for doctoral candidates are found in the Higher Education Ordinance 5 chapter §§ 1-7 and in the university's rules and guidelines.
