PhD Student in Meteorology Would you like to work with the atmospheric boundary layer, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Would you like an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a position as a PhD student at Uppsala University. The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. Here there is broad expertise that contributes to solutions for important societal issues. Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas; rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development. Our research combines natural science and engineering with social science and is often interdisciplinary. At the department, over 300 people from more than 30 countries work, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. Our six research divisions: • Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Paleobiology • Wind Energy For more information, see: www.uu.se/geovetenskaper The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). This is done through micrometeorological field measurements and advanced atmospheric models. Job Responsibilities The position is part of a larger project focused on understanding how weather affects radar wave propagation over the Baltic Sea and its coastal zones. The studies involve processing existing data and collecting new measurement data in the coastal zone to understand the impact, particularly from atmospheric gradients of moisture and temperature, on radar wave propagation with a main focus on so-called ducts. Complementary oceanographic measurements of waves and water temperature as well as high-frequency turbulence measurements in the atmosphere will also be used to evaluate the description of the near-surface layers in coupled atmospheric models that affect radar wave propagation. Job tasks include collection of meteorological measurements using existing systems for moisture gradient measurements at the Östergarnsholm measurement station and use of new technology such as UAVs, as well as modeling of relevant meteorological coastal processes and phenomena. Qualification Requirements Eligible for doctoral education is someone who has completed a degree at advanced level within natural science with focus on meteorology or equivalent. Other technical or natural science degrees can also be considered, especially in oceanography. completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level including an independent work of at least 15 higher education credits, or in some other way acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. It is also a requirement to have knowledge of mathematics and physics as well as basic computer skills.
