The Department of Chemistry within Life Sciences conducts research and education in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. More than 100 people, including approximately 45 doctoral students, work at the department. New staff members and students are recruited from around the world, and English is the primary working language. Project Description
The Streuff group is internationally recognized for developing innovative synthesis methods, particularly in the field of early transition metal catalysis. The project focuses on investigating and developing single-electron transfer reactions with low-valent titanium catalysis and related reagents/catalysts. Additional projects in areas such as new bond cleavage and defunctionalization reactions, clarification of reaction mechanisms in catalysis, and total synthesis are also available and can be discussed at a later stage.
Duties
The primary responsibility of a doctoral student is to pursue doctoral studies, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral coursework. The duties may also include teaching and other departmental work, but not exceeding 20% of working time.
Qualification Requirements
Eligibility for education at the doctoral level is granted to those who have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at advanced level, or who have acquired equivalent competencies in another way. To be admitted to doctoral education in chemistry with a focus on organic chemistry, approved courses in chemistry or chemistry-related areas are required, comprising at least 90 hp, including at least 40 hp organic chemistry at advanced level, or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way. Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
A natural sciences master's degree in organic chemistry or equivalent.
Great weight will be placed on personal qualities such as good collaborative skills, motivation, and independence, as well as how the applicant is assessed to have the abilities required to benefit from and develop within the doctoral education program based on their experience and competencies.
Desirable/Meritorious Qualifications
Knowledge and practical experience with NMR spectroscopy will be regarded as a very strong merit.
The selection of applicants will be based on undergraduate academic profile and any additional research experience in areas relevant to the research project. Such experience should be documented and included in the application, for example through articles published in international peer-reviewed journals or through employment at companies or other institutions working in the specific research field. Great weight will be placed on personal qualifications required for the project.
In filling these positions, we strive to recruit those individuals who, through a comprehensive assessment of competencies, skills, and documented merits, are deemed most suitable to conduct and develop the current project and contribute to positive development of the department.
Doctoral students are typically engaged for some teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels. Previous experience with teaching/mentoring, even from environments outside schools/universities, as well as other outreach activities may therefore be meritorious.
