Although proteins constitute a large proportion of the soil nitrogen pool, the processes governing their breakdown into amino acids are still poorly understood. A critical knowledge gap exists in understanding soil protein composition and properties and their role in regulating the nitrogen cycle. This doctoral project will address this challenge by characterizing the composition of proteins in soil and investigating the mechanisms governing nitrogen turnover. The doctoral candidate will primarily work in the laboratory and analyze natural soils from mesocosm and field experiments.
