PhD Student in Nature-Inspired Biochar-Enzyme Composites for PFAS Remediation

PhD Student in Nature-Inspired Biochar-Enzyme Composites for PFAS Remediation The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geosciences. Here you will find broad expertise that contributes to solutions for important societal challenges. Our research combines natural sciences and engineering with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. At the department, over 300 people from more than 30 countries work, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. Our six research divisions: • Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Paleobiology • Wind Energy For more information see: www.uu.se/geovetenskaper Project Description: The project, EnzCarb4PFAS, focuses on developing lignin-based biochar materials with high PFAS sorption capacity and immobilizing enzymes on their surfaces to enable simultaneous adsorption and catalytic defluorination. Lignin, a renewable by-product from the pulp and paper industry, is converted into highly porous biochar that concentrates PFAS from contaminated water. Enzyme immobilization on the biochar surface extends enzyme lifespan, improves substrate accessibility, and creates a synergistic system where adsorption brings PFAS into close contact with the enzyme's active sites. The research proceeds through three coordinated work packages: (WP1) screening of extracellular enzymes for PFAS transformation using real contaminated groundwater; (WP2) development and validation of biochar-enzyme composites; and (WP3) pilot-scale testing in lysimeter systems with contaminated water and soil from former fire training sites. The PhD student will work under the main supervision of Assistant Professor Tetyana Budnyak and co-supervision of Professor Fritjof Fagerlund. The project is funded by a Tuffo grant, with co-financing from Uppsala University. The research subject for your doctoral studies is environmental analysis. The project will involve close collaboration with industry partners and other relevant actors, as well as with academic research groups in Sweden and internationally, which gives the PhD student the opportunity to work in a broad, interdisciplinary, and collaboration-oriented research environment. Duties The main task of a PhD student is to pursue doctoral research training, which includes both participation in research projects and research training courses. The duties may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of working time. The duties will include synthesis and characterization of lignin-based biochar materials, screening and immobilization of enzymes, and evaluation of PFAS adsorption and degradation performance in laboratory column experiments and pilot-scale lysimeter systems with real PFAS-contaminated soil and groundwater. Qualification Requirements To be eligible for doctoral-level education, you must have completed a degree at advanced level in chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, materials science, environmental engineering, or related fields completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level including an independent thesis of at least 15 higher education credits, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way. PhD Student in Multimodal Machine Learning for Energy Storage Materials

Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in chemistry. The department has 270 employees and generates annual revenue of 300 million kronor. The department's six programs conduct highly successful research of international caliber. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international collaboration, and we see continued strong growth within our field. The department provides education within engineering and civil engineering programs as well as master's programs. Project Description The development of tomorrow's energy storage materials relies on a fundamental understanding of how their chemical composition and structure change during operation in applications. No single method can capture the complete picture. Instead, researchers must rely on multiple complementary techniques, each providing an incomplete and indirect view of the same underlying process and which are traditionally interpreted manually and separately. Multimodal machine learning offers a principled alternative: integrating heterogeneous data streams from both experiments and simulations into a unified, physically grounded model. The project focuses on developing such a framework and applying it specifically to electrode/electrolyte interfaces in batteries, where surface-sensitive X-ray scattering techniques (X-ray reflectometry, GISAXS, and GIWAXS) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM-D) are combined in operando experiments. The core of the methodology is data assimilation, where the interface's underlying properties (mass, volume, density, porosity, and morphology) are treated as a latent state evolving in time, with each measurement technique contributing a noisy and incomplete observation through its own forward model. The work encompasses sequential Bayesian inference, deep state-space models, and uncertainty-aware representations trained on both experimental data and simulations, such as phase-field simulations of metal nucleation and growth coupled to lattice-Boltzmann modeling of the quartz crystal's acoustic response. Machine learning-accelerated surrogate models make these simulations sufficiently fast to function as transition and observation operators in the inference engine. Finally, the learned latent space is analyzed to extract physical meaning, and the models' generative capability is leveraged to translate data between techniques. The goal is an interpretable and uncertainty-quantified model of how interfaces form and grow, deepening understanding of metal deposition and surface passivation in Li-, Zn-, and Cu-based systems, and transferable to other materials and analytical techniques. The PhD student's task is to develop and implement this framework in close collaboration between chemistry and computer science at Uppsala University and together with our German partners. This involves building and validating inference and simulation pipelines, actively participating in planning and conducting operando experiments – including measurement campaigns at the synchrotron facility PETRA III (DESY, Hamburg) – and developing deep expertise in probabilistic machine learning, data assimilation, scientific computing, and analysis of electrochemical interfaces. The PhD student's focus is research. Some teaching responsibility may be assigned but will not exceed 20% of total working time. The PhD student will also take graduate courses closely connected to the project's research themes. We are looking for a highly motivated person who will contribute to high-quality scientific work in a multidisciplinary research environment, aiming to publish results in leading scientific journals and present them at both national and international conferences. Qualifications Required Applicants must have: - completed a degree at an advanced level, or - completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level (of which 15 credits constitute independent work), with content relevant to doctoral studies, or - in some other way, within or outside the country, acquired substantially equivalent knowledge - very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written - a degree at an advanced level or equivalent as described above in chemistry, materials science, computer science, applied mathematics, engineering physics, or a related field - the ability to express yourself clearly, document your work, and contribute to the community in a research environment Great weight will also be placed on personal qualities such as good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability to manage doctoral studies. Desirable/Meriting Additional Qualifications Practical experience with probabilistic machine learning, Bayesian inference, generative models, data assimilation, or scientific computing is meriting, as are strong programming skills (e.g., Python, PyTorch, or JAX). Experience with electrochemistry, battery research, X-ray scattering techniques, or analysis of experimental time series data is also advantageous. JOB

Doctoral Student in Computational Image Analysis

Are you interested in developing new methods for image analysis and machine learning for precision medicine and clinical decision support? Do you want to be part of a research team with skilled and inspiring colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that offers secure and favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a doctoral position at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University. The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in both research and education at all levels. We are currently Uppsala University's third largest department, with over 350 employees, of whom 120 are teachers and 120 are doctoral students. Approximately 5,000 undergraduate students take one or more courses at the department each year. More information about us can be found on the department's website. The project is led by Professor Nataša Sladoje, within the research group MIDA – Methods for Image Data Analysis – at the Department of Information Technology and is conducted together with other researchers at the Centre for Image Analysis who develop computational methods with a particular focus on deep learning and image analysis. The project builds on close collaboration with researchers at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology (IGP) at Uppsala University as well as SciLifeLab, the national infrastructure for life science. Project Description Immunotherapy has become a life-saving option for patients with advanced cancer. However, only a minority of patients develop a sustained response. Many researchers are working to better understand the complexity of anti-cancer immunity and develop diagnostic methods that accurately predict treatment benefit and enable personalized cancer treatment planning. Modern AI-based methods are essential to advance this research frontier. This project is an important part of our broader initiative to develop and apply innovative, interpretable data-driven analysis methods to significantly increase our understanding of how immune cell interactions affect the cancer microenvironment. We will apply these analysis methods to high-information multimodal microscopy data and develop techniques to integrate correlated structural and molecular analysis in three-dimensional tissue space. This integration will enable improved prediction of disease progression and response to specific treatments. Duties The doctoral student will primarily focus on their own research training. Other work at the department, including teaching and administrative duties, may be included within the scope of employment (max 20%). Qualification Requirements Basic eligibility is held by those who: have completed a degree at advanced level in computer science, image analysis and machine learning, technical physics, data analysis, applied mathematics, molecular biotechnology, or a related field, or have completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level including an independent work of at least 15 higher education credits, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. The university may grant an exception from the requirement of basic eligibility for an individual applicant if there are special reasons. (7 ch. 39 § HF). For specific eligibility requirements, see the curriculum for the subject. Specific requirements are met by having completed courses in areas relevant to image analysis and machine learning, covering at least 90 higher education credits. Relevant courses include, for example, image processing, computer vision, machine learning, deep learning and neural networks, as well as courses in Python, GPU programming, mathematical modeling, and statistics or equivalent. We seek candidates with: A strong academic background and solid understanding of computation and analysis; Good knowledge of Python programming and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow; Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English; Creativity, thoroughness, and a structured approach to problem-solving; Good collaboration skills, drive, and independence. Desirable/Meriting Additional Qualifications Meriting qualifications include: Interest in biomedical research and experience applying image analysis in medicine; Experience with version control using Git, typesetting with LaTeX, and using Linux computers; Experience with convolutional and transformer-based neural networks for image analysis; Experience with graph-based methods and graph neural networks; Experience with explainable and interpretable AI (XAI). Provisioning for doctoral students is found in the Higher Education Ordinance 5 ch §§ 1-7 and in the university's rules and guidelines. Application The application must contain: Curriculum vitae (CV); Copy of degree/diploma and transcript of course record with grades; Thesis work (or a draft of this, and/or other self-produced technical or scientific text), scientific publications, and other relevant documents in electronic format; Contact information (name, email addresses, and phone numbers) of at least two references, with indication of the context, duration, and nature of the relationship to the candidate. Reference letters may be enclosed as supporting documents but are not required at the time of application. A personal letter (maximum one page) that includes: Your motivation for applying for this position; A short bullet list of three main academic or scientific achievements; Earliest possible start date (with reasons if applicable). About the Position The position is temporary, according to HF 5 ch § 7. The scope is full-time. Start date: 1 October 2026 or by agreement. Work location: Uppsala Information about the position is provided by: Prof. Nataša Sladoje (email: [email protected]). Welcome to submit your application by 20 August 2026, UFV-PA 2026/2366.
