Research Assistant in In-Cell NMR of RNA Dynamics
The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University is a broad international environment for research and teaching. At IMBIM, basic research is conducted in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumor biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology, and virology. The department's research is primarily fundamental in nature, but has clear connections and significance for health and disease in both animals and humans. For more information, visit Research – Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology – Uppsala University. The position is located in the Petzold group, which studies RNA structure, dynamics, and function using NMR spectroscopy, chemical probing, and computational methods. Project Description The project aims to understand how RNA structure and dynamics contribute to gene regulation in the cellular environment. A particular focus is on developing and applying in-cell NMR to quantify RNA conformational dynamics, including exchange between ground and excited states, directly in living human cells. Using enzymatic circularization of RNA to counteract intracellular degradation, and optimized relaxation-based data acquisition (selective excitation, SOFAST, and R1ρ relaxation dispersion), the project will map how the cellular environment shapes the structural ensemble of biologically relevant RNA molecules. Duties The work is primarily experimental (laboratory and NMR work) and includes: Preparation and purification of isotope-labeled RNA and DNA samples for NMR (in vitro transcription, large-scale production, and enzymatic circularization of RNA hairpins) Introduction of nucleic acids into human cell lines (e.g., electroporation) and preparation of in-cell NMR samples, including controls for cell viability and leakage (supernatant control) Collection and optimization of solution NMR experiments for nucleic acids, including imino proton detection with selective excitation/SOFAST and measurement of longitudinal relaxation (selT1) Measurement of RNA dynamics using 1H and 15N R1ρ relaxation dispersion to quantify populations, exchange rates, and chemical shifts of excited states, in vitro and in-cell Quantification of intracellular nucleic acid concentration and subcellular localization Processing, curve fitting, and analysis of relaxation and dispersion data Documentation and presentation of results Work is conducted in close collaboration with experimental and computationally-oriented researchers in the group. Qualifications The applicant should have a master's degree in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, or a related field. Documented practical experience with biomolecular NMR and with preparation of RNA and/or DNA samples for structural studies is required. Experience with in-cell NMR of nucleic acids Experience with RNA dynamics, relaxation dispersion (R1ρ), and analysis of excited states Experience with enzymatic RNA production and circularization and isotope labeling Experience with mammalian cell culture and electroporation/transfection Familiarity with NMR pulse sequences and data analysis (e.g., TopSpin, curve fitting) Scientific writing and publications The applicant should be analytical, meticulous, and have good collaboration skills. Excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required. About the Position Fixed-term employment until August 31, 2027. Full-time position. Postdoctoral Researcher in Air-Sea-Ice Interactions
The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. Here you will find broad expertise that contributes to solutions for important societal challenges. Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and advanced models. Our research and education cover many different areas: rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development. Our research combines natural science and engineering with social science and is often interdisciplinary. The department employs over 300 people from more than 30 countries, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. Our six research divisions: • Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Paleobiology • Wind Energy For more information, see: https://www.uu.se/institution/geovetenskaper The successful candidate for this position will be employed at the Air, Water and Landscape Science (LUVAL) program at the Department of Earth Sciences. Responsibilities Turbulent flows at the air–sea–ice interface in the marginal ice zone (MIZ)—the transition zone between open water and pack ice—are critical for polar weather, ecosystems, and climate on both local and global scales. The presence of sea ice floes, varying in size from centimeters to hundreds of kilometers, creates an exceptionally heterogeneous surface with varying roughness and temperature profiles. These characteristics significantly affect momentum and heat fluxes across the air–sea–ice interface and other processes. Despite this importance, our understanding of turbulent flows at the interface in the MIZ remains fragmented and poorly represented in current weather and climate models. The postdoctoral project will focus on: implementing new turbulent parameterizations for the marginal ice zone (MIZ) in Earth system models (regional or global), and assessing the impact of MIZ processes on polar extreme cyclones and their broader consequences for polar climate. Requirements PhD in atmospheric or ocean science, or a related field, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD in the above subject. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Preferably, the degree should have been completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special circumstances, the degree may have been completed earlier. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, etc. Documented experience with numerical modeling, preferably with tools such as WRF, EC-Earth, or sea ice models. Strong competence in scientific programming and computational modeling. Ability to independently drive research projects while actively contributing to collaboration in international and interdisciplinary research teams. Merits Good knowledge of Linux/Unix environments and strong expertise in Python and Bash scripting are highly desirable. Candidates are encouraged to actively contribute with their own ideas, methods, and perspectives to the project. We especially value creativity, engagement, and strong research capabilities. About the Position This is a fixed-term position for 2 years. Full-time. Start date: November 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
