Structural Mechanics Expert

Do you have solid knowledge of structural mechanics and the finite element method (FEM) and want to apply your expertise in an important context? About the Position In the role as an expert in structural mechanics and protection against nuclear weapons effects, you will: - Develop and apply FEM models to describe structural response of constructions under dynamic and extreme loads. - Develop and apply descriptions of materials under extreme loads. - Apply physical models for shock waves, thermal radiation, and other effects from nuclear weapons together with FEM models to assess nuclear weapons effects on structures and materiel. - Serve as a link between your own technical calculations and the application of results as well as further development within other parts of FOI and with clients. About the Unit Activities in the nuclear weapons threat area include both assessments of various actors' capabilities and intentions to develop and use nuclear weapons, as well as assessment of nuclear weapons effects and protection. This position is directed toward the unit's work developing models for nuclear weapons effects and responses of structures and materiel, as well as producing input for technical assessments of possible protective solutions. One of the central aspects within the nuclear weapons threat area is to provide expert support on nuclear weapons effects to the Swedish Armed Forces and other authorities within total defense. The unit also provides technical expert support to the Government Offices and other relevant authorities on arms control, disarmament, non-proliferation, and international export control regarding nuclear weapons. Staff members from the unit regularly participate as technical experts in Swedish delegations to international meetings within the unit's area of responsibility. You will work as a researcher at the Nuclear Weapons Threat unit, which is part of the CBRN Protection and Security Department at FOI in Kista. The unit collaborates with several different parts of FOI. Within the area of nuclear weapons effects, we collaborate with the Weapons Protection and Security Department, which works both experimentally and theoretically on issues related to facility protection and assessment of effects and vulnerabilities. Requirements We are looking for someone who has: - A civil engineering or master's degree in structural mechanics or equivalent education in a related field, - worked in development and have solid experience with the finite element method and structural mechanics calculations, - good knowledge of Swedish and English both orally and in writing. You have strong analytical abilities and can break down overarching questions into more specific assessments and calculations.
