PhD Student in Technology
Department of Energy and Technology Doctoral Research Subject: Technology Description of the Doctoral Project: We are seeking a motivated PhD student to develop knowledge about how production systems for fast-growing hardwood trees should be modified to better adapt to a future where both the risk of and effects of unexpected events – as well as their negative consequences – increase. The work focuses on the climate impact of these unexpected events. The project is part of the activities at the competence center Trees for Me. Changes in the external environment linked to the consequences of climate change and political instability have become increasingly clear and evident in recent years. For example, the extent of forest fires, storms, and insect attacks has increased, and the consequences for forests have in some cases been catastrophic. However, there are measures that can reduce the risk of, and/or the effects of, most of these events; examples of such measures include changes in tree species selection and forest management strategies. Measures to reduce the occurrence and effects of unexpected, undesired events typically involve increased costs and/or reduced revenues in the short term. They also affect the system's overall climate impact. Converting forest management to completely eliminate the effects of all conceivable disturbances is not feasible; measures must instead be weighed against the risk of a disturbance occurring and the potential damage such an event could cause. Trees for Me is a competence center focused on fast-growing hardwood trees – such as poplar, aspen, hybrid aspen, and birch – for sustainable forests, materials, and energy. Around 20 partner organizations from academia, research institutes, industry, and the public sector collaborate within the center. The goal is to develop scientifically grounded, innovative solutions for – and build future competence in – a new and resilient system for supplying forest biomass, intended for processing into high-value material and energy products. In the second phase of Trees for Me, approximately ten new PhD students and postdoctoral researchers are now to be recruited. They will collaborate with actors across the entire forest value chain to build research competence and knowledge for the benefit of the energy and forest sectors. Duties: The PhD student is expected to read and critically review scientific literature in English and to publish and present results in scientific journals and at conferences. The PhD student shall also participate in doctoral training courses and contribute to the department's activities. Eligibility: Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed an advanced level degree, completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level, or who in some other way within or outside the country have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 § 39). Specific eligibility for admission to doctoral training in the subject of Technology is held by those who have knowledge equivalent to at least 90 higher education credits in courses in technology-relevant subjects. These must include an independent work and at least 30 higher education credits must be at advanced level. For others, specific eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis with regard to the research task. Furthermore, you must have knowledge of English equivalent to a passing grade in English B/6 from Swedish upper secondary school. Your Background: Qualification Requirements: Advanced level degree (engineering or master's degree) in forest science, technology, natural resource economics, or a related field. Very strong ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Meritorious Qualifications: Knowledge within agriculture and forestry Bio-based products and energy Risk analysis Life cycle assessment (LCA) and modeling If one or two of these competencies are lacking, it is possible to supplement the knowledge base after admission. Great weight is placed on personal qualities, such as collaboration skills, analytical ability and problem-solving skills, motivation, and ability to work independently. PhD Student in Nature-Inspired Biochar-Enzyme Composites for PFAS Remediation
PhD Student in Nature-Inspired Biochar-Enzyme Composites for PFAS Remediation The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geosciences. Here you will find broad expertise that contributes to solutions for important societal challenges. Our research combines natural sciences and engineering with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. At the department, over 300 people from more than 30 countries work, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. Our six research divisions: • Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Paleobiology • Wind Energy For more information see: www.uu.se/geovetenskaper Project Description: The project, EnzCarb4PFAS, focuses on developing lignin-based biochar materials with high PFAS sorption capacity and immobilizing enzymes on their surfaces to enable simultaneous adsorption and catalytic defluorination. Lignin, a renewable by-product from the pulp and paper industry, is converted into highly porous biochar that concentrates PFAS from contaminated water. Enzyme immobilization on the biochar surface extends enzyme lifespan, improves substrate accessibility, and creates a synergistic system where adsorption brings PFAS into close contact with the enzyme's active sites. The research proceeds through three coordinated work packages: (WP1) screening of extracellular enzymes for PFAS transformation using real contaminated groundwater; (WP2) development and validation of biochar-enzyme composites; and (WP3) pilot-scale testing in lysimeter systems with contaminated water and soil from former fire training sites. The PhD student will work under the main supervision of Assistant Professor Tetyana Budnyak and co-supervision of Professor Fritjof Fagerlund. The project is funded by a Tuffo grant, with co-financing from Uppsala University. The research subject for your doctoral studies is environmental analysis. The project will involve close collaboration with industry partners and other relevant actors, as well as with academic research groups in Sweden and internationally, which gives the PhD student the opportunity to work in a broad, interdisciplinary, and collaboration-oriented research environment. Duties The main task of a PhD student is to pursue doctoral research training, which includes both participation in research projects and research training courses. The duties may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of working time. The duties will include synthesis and characterization of lignin-based biochar materials, screening and immobilization of enzymes, and evaluation of PFAS adsorption and degradation performance in laboratory column experiments and pilot-scale lysimeter systems with real PFAS-contaminated soil and groundwater. Qualification Requirements To be eligible for doctoral-level education, you must have completed a degree at advanced level in chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, materials science, environmental engineering, or related fields completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level including an independent thesis of at least 15 higher education credits, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way. We place high value on personal qualities and are interested in individuals who are determined, structured, well-organized, have strong analytical skills, and are interested in project planning and leadership. The PhD student must be able to work effectively both independently and in groups, lead and drive scientific projects while collaborating with other researchers. We are seeking a PhD student who is strongly motivated to complete doctoral studies within this interdisciplinary subject and who approaches tasks in a focused manner. We expect the PhD student to be proficient in both spoken and written English to communicate effectively with all colleagues and to publish internationally. Desirable/Meritorious Qualifications Applicants who expect to obtain their MSc in the near future are also encouraged to apply. It is meritorious, but not required, if the candidate has some experience in one or more of the following areas: experience with PFAS analysis, water purification technologies, or environmental remediation methods, characterization of physicochemical materials knowledge of data analysis and visualization Regulations for PhD students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§ 1-7 and in the university's rules and guidelines. In this recruitment, we have replaced the cover letter with questions that you answer in connection with your application. Your answers will be used as part of the selection process.
