Postdoctoral Researcher in Structural Biology

Project Description The project encompasses structural studies of diatom viruses with the aim of increasing knowledge about the viral factories formed in diatoms. Work tasks include cultivating diatoms for viral infection, characterizing infection (e.g., using electron microscopy and determining viral titers), purifying viruses and cellular components, and determining structures using cryo-electron microscopy. Postdoctoral Researcher COMPEL-Energy Sciences: Focus on Thermal Runaway Modeling

Workplace Description This position is affiliated with the Division of Heat Transfer at the Department of Energy Sciences. The division conducts research and education on energy generation, conversion, and use in various electro- and thermomechanical systems where studies of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, reactive flows, and structural mechanics play a central role. In particular, improved understanding of turbulent, reactive, and multiphase flows combined with materials science and new manufacturing techniques are key to improved heat transfer mechanisms and more efficient energy use. The division has approximately 25 colleagues, of whom 15 are doctoral students. At the international level, we collaborate with universities and institutes in Europe, Asia, and North America. COMPEL research spans the entire battery value chain: from materials research, research on new cell concepts and cell manufacturing, battery systems and system integration, recycling, to battery safety. At Lund University with Lund University of Technology, COMPEL is a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening research environments in battery technology and electrification in a way that complements relevant research at other institutions and builds on our strengths. COMPEL at Lund University initially includes researchers from ten departments, and three research areas have been identified for strategic development: materials research, integration of batteries with power electronics, and safe energy storage. On the education side, the number of places in several civil engineering programs is being expanded, and the course offering related to battery technology and electrification is being strengthened. This research environment is a wealth of resources and opportunities for those who want to develop their careers and make a difference in the transition toward a sustainable future. Specific Subject Description This project focuses on the development of GPU-accelerated, high-resolution simulation models for thermal runaway in lithium-ion battery cells, modules, battery packs, and complete battery systems. Thermal runaway is a chain reaction that leads to an uncontrolled release of the energy stored in a battery cell, which can result in fires and other dangerous events that are difficult to contain. As battery systems become larger and more complex, there is an increased need for computationally efficient predictive tools that can describe the underlying physical and chemical processes across multiple scales. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Scania Industrial Battery Systems and partners within COMPEL. The main objective of the postdoctoral project is to develop next-generation GPU-based simulation methodology in OpenFOAM to predict the initiation and propagation of thermal runaway at the cell and module level. Special emphasis will be placed on leveraging modern heterogeneous computing architectures to enable large-scale, high-resolution simulations of reactive flows. The models developed at the cell level will subsequently be coupled to simulations at the module, pack, and system level to improve the ability to predict how thermal runaway propagates in practical battery systems. Work Tasks As a postdoctoral researcher, work tasks primarily involve conducting research. Teaching may also be included in the work tasks, but no more than one-fifth of working time. Within the scope of the employment, there is the opportunity for three weeks of university pedagogical education. The purpose of the employment is to develop your independence as a researcher and create conditions for further advancement. The project therefore aims to characterize species-specific interactions between nematodes and their bacterial partners. Postdoctoral Researcher in Remote Sensing of Forests and Climate Risk Assessment at Mgeo

Special Subject Description Sweden's forests face increasing climate-related pressures in the form of intensified drought, more frequent and damaging storms, and associated risks such as bark beetle infestations. Forest owners and regional authorities need current and spatially detailed information about where climate stress occurs and which forest stands are most vulnerable. However, current monitoring relies largely on field inspections and broad regional assessments, which are often too slow or limited to serve as operational decision-making tools. The Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences is announcing a postdoctoral position within a project aimed at meeting this need. The project's goal is to develop an operational, web-based service that uses satellite observations from Landsat and Sentinel, tree species maps, forest structure data, and climate indicators for continuous assessment of climate risks in Sweden's forests. The service will provide tree species-specific maps of drought stress, a risk index for storm exposure, and indicators of susceptibility to bark beetle infestations. The service is being developed in collaboration with regional authorities and forest owner associations. The project will also investigate the spatial and temporal mechanisms linking windthrow, drought, and bark beetle infestations and establish the scientific foundation for the service. Duties The primary responsibilities within a postdoctoral position involve conducting research. Teaching may also be included depending on how the postdoctoral project progresses, but must not exceed 20 percent of working time. In connection with this, the opportunity is provided to complete three weeks of university-level pedagogical training. The postdoctoral researcher will: Develop and maintain harmonized time series datasets from Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellites and integrate these with complementary data, including airborne lidar, tree species maps, and gridded climate data. Produce spatially explicit climate risk layers, including tree species-specific maps of drought stress, a risk index for storm exposure, and indicators of susceptibility to bark beetle infestations. Contribute to the development of an operational web-based monitoring service, including automated update workflows and a web-based GIS dashboard for users. Investigate which forest, landscape, and climate conditions affect sensitivity to storm damage, using major storm events as natural experiments and employing interpretable machine learning and deep learning models. Publish research results in high-quality international scientific journals. At least two scientific articles are expected. Qualifications Employment as a postdoctoral researcher at Lund University requires a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, within a subject area relevant to the position.
