Project Description
The project encompasses structural studies of diatom viruses with the aim of increasing knowledge about the viral factories formed in diatoms. Work tasks include cultivating diatoms for viral infection, characterizing infection (e.g., using electron microscopy and determining viral titers), purifying viruses and cellular components, and determining structures using cryo-electron microscopy.
Work Tasks
As a postdoctoral researcher, your primary responsibility will be to conduct research. Teaching may be included in your work tasks, but no more than one-fifth of your working time. Within the framework of the employment, you will be offered the opportunity to participate in three weeks of higher education pedagogical training.
Work tasks also include:
Research within the subject area.
Supervision of thesis students and doctoral candidates.
Seeking external research funding.
Qualifications
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree, within the subject area of the position and completed no more than three years before the employment decision date. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been completed earlier.
Other requirements:
Very good knowledge of English, spoken and written.
Documented practical experience with structure determination using cryo-electron microscopy.
Documented practical experience with work involving viruses.
Documented practical experience with cultivation of prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic algae.
Assessment Criteria
This is a merit-based position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a research career, and evaluation of applicants will be based primarily on their scientific merits and potential as researchers.
Particular emphasis will be placed on scientific competence within the subject area.
When employing a postdoctoral researcher, the following will form the basis for assessment:
Strong ability to develop and conduct high-quality research.
Pedagogical ability.
Additional merits:
Practical experience with in situ structure determination using cryo-electron tomography.
Practical experience with non-cryogenic electron microscopy techniques.
Practical experience with cloning, expression, purification, and characterization of proteins.
Practical experience supervising students.
Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, initiative, and independence, as well as how your experience and competence is assessed to complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and contribute to its future development.
Terms
The employment is limited to a maximum of 2 years and is full-time. The employment is limited according to the agreement "Agreement on Time-Limited Employment as Postdoctoral Researcher," between the labor market parties dated 2022-02-01 (Swedish Agency for Government Employers, OFR:s, and Saco-S).
