Prison Chaplain with the Church of Sweden Västerås

Are you a confident and stable priest who enjoys traditional pastoral duties and is also drawn to meeting people during one of life's most difficult times, through services and pastoral conversations in a prison setting? Then this could be the position for you. Welcome to apply for the position of prison chaplain with the Church of Sweden Västerås! Half of the position is based at Tillberga Correctional Facility, where you will work approximately two to three days per week. The need for pastoral care is substantial, and you will meet clients in individual conversations, devotions, and services – including one service per month on weekends. You will be part of an ecumenical spiritual care team (NAV) and will collaborate with correctional staff. There are excellent opportunities to help shape the role yourself. The other half of the position, you will work as a curate assigned to Norrbo and Tillberga parishes, serving the entire North pastoral area. This includes traditional pastoral duties such as baptisms, weddings, funerals, and Sunday mass, as well as devotions and shorter weekday services. On weekends or during a funeral, you may very well serve in a different part of the North pastoral area than Norrbo and Tillberga. You will be part of the team at Norrbo and Tillberga parishes, which consists of approximately 14 people and is led by a unit manager. You will collaborate with colleagues within the North pastoral area and more broadly within the pastorate. Here you are welcomed to a team with an open and inclusive culture that works in a worship-centered rural community, characterized by commitment, rich youth and volunteer work, and great creative joy – proud that the church is a living part of the local rural community. To apply for the position, you must be ordained as a priest in the Church of Sweden and be qualified to perform the duties of the office. A Category B driver's license and access to a car are required, as well as strong skills in Swedish and English and basic IT knowledge. It is desirable if you have pastoral care training and in-depth experience with pastoral conversations, and particularly desirable with experience in institutional pastoral care, preferably within criminal justice or similar services. For you to thrive in this role, we believe you are a confident and stable person with good self-awareness and high integrity, who remains calm in pressured situations and clearly distinguishes between the personal and the professional. You are self-directed and take responsibility for structuring and driving your own work – not least at the correctional facility, where you largely lead and plan your own time. You are flexible and able to adapt when circumstances change. At the same time, you work well with others: you listen, communicate, and resolve any conflicts constructively. Finally, you are outgoing and relationship-building in professional contexts and meet people with empathy. The position is a permanent employment with 100% service hours, which includes day, evening, and weekend shifts. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. The selection process includes a personality test (TQ). Work at the correctional facility also requires a criminal record check, drug and alcohol testing, and a security clearance with registry check. About Tillberga Correctional Facility: Tillberga Correctional Facility has approximately 130 places in security class 3. The facility offers an attractive environment with well-functioning programs and meaningful employment through a wood factory that keeps clients occupied. The Swedish Christian Council (SKR) coordinates spiritual care and services within Swedish corrections, and each facility has a spiritual care committee (NAV). All prospective NAV staff must undergo a security clearance check by the Swedish Security Service. For more information about NAV, see http://www.skr.org If you have any questions about the position, you are welcome to contact one of us: Contact person week 33: Ida Hugosson, Unit Manager Önsta, 021-404126, mailto:[email protected] Contact person weeks 34 and 35: Jan Ryde, Rural Unit Manager, 021-767 72, mailto:[email protected] We look forward to your application! About the Church of Sweden Västerås The Church of Sweden Västerås has approximately 78,000 members. Around 230 dedicated employees work here, all part of a well-resourced modern organization with good working conditions, excellent development opportunities, and competitive benefits. Here you will have many colleagues and numerous meetings and contacts with other people through our various activities. We operate in 26 churches and on 23 cemeteries as well as throughout the community. The Church of Sweden Västerås offers many different professions. You might primarily think of our specialized roles – priests, deacons, church musicians, and parish educators – but we also have custodians, cemetery workers, communications professionals, accountants, and many others with diverse backgrounds. You do not need to be a member of the Church of Sweden or be religious to work with us, unless you work in one of the specialized professions. However, you must share our fundamental values, which are rooted in the Christian faith. When you choose to work with us, you contribute to creating a better life and a fairer society for many, by providing help and support to people who are struggling. Qualifications You are a positive, responsible, and service-oriented person who enjoys working both independently and with others. You have good communication skills, are comfortable interacting with people, and feel at ease in a physical and varied work environment. The position requires upper secondary education and good Swedish language skills. Since an annual lifesaving test is part of the job, good physical fitness is necessary. It is advantageous if you have experience with similar work, as well as training in swimming instruction, lifesaving, or CPR. A B-class driver's license is also advantageous. We place great emphasis on personal suitability. We are looking for someone who is confident, flexible, cooperative, and who values order, safety, and good customer service.
