Prison Chaplain with the Church of Sweden Västerås

Half of the position is based at Tillberga Correctional Facility, where you will work approximately two to three days per week. The need for pastoral care is substantial, and you will meet clients in individual conversations, devotions, and services – including one service per month on weekends. You will be part of an ecumenical spiritual care team (NAV) and will collaborate with correctional staff. There are excellent opportunities to help shape the role yourself. The other half of the position, you will work as a curate assigned to Norrbo and Tillberga parishes, serving the entire North pastoral area. This includes traditional pastoral duties such as baptisms, weddings, funerals, and Sunday mass, as well as devotions and shorter weekday services. On weekends or during a funeral, you may very well serve in a different part of the North pastoral area than Norrbo and Tillberga. You will be part of the team at Norrbo and Tillberga parishes, which consists of approximately 14 people and is led by a unit manager. You will collaborate with colleagues within the North pastoral area and more broadly within the pastorate. To apply for the position, you must be ordained as a priest in the Church of Sweden and be qualified to perform the duties of the office. A Category B driver's license and access to a car are required, as well as strong skills in Swedish and English and basic IT knowledge. It is desirable if you have pastoral care training and in-depth experience with pastoral conversations, and particularly desirable with experience in institutional pastoral care, preferably within criminal justice or similar services. For you to thrive in this role, we believe you are a confident and stable person with good self-awareness and high integrity, who remains calm in pressured situations and clearly distinguishes between the personal and the professional. You are self-directed and take responsibility for structuring and driving your own work – not least at the correctional facility, where you largely lead and plan your own time. You are flexible and able to adapt when circumstances change. At the same time, you work well with others: you listen, communicate, and resolve any conflicts constructively. Finally, you are outgoing and relationship-building in professional contexts and meet people with empathy. The position is a permanent employment with 100% service hours, which includes day, evening, and weekend shifts. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. The selection process includes a personality test (TQ). Work at the correctional facility also requires a criminal record check, drug and alcohol testing, and a security clearance with registry check. About Tillberga Correctional Facility: Tillberga Correctional Facility has approximately 130 places in security class 3. The facility offers an attractive environment with well-functioning programs and meaningful employment through a wood factory that keeps clients occupied. The Swedish Christian Council (SKR) coordinates spiritual care and services within Swedish corrections, and each facility has a spiritual care committee (NAV).
