Postdoctoral Researcher in Intelligence Studies
About the workplace The position is located in Stockholm at the Department of Defense Systems, Swedish Defence University. The Swedish Defence University hosts a newly established interdisciplinary Platform for Intelligence and Security Services. Learn more about the platform at https://www.fhs.se/forskning/natverk-och-samarbeten/plattform-for-underrattelse--och-sakerhetstjanst.html. Description Intelligence services are characterized by significant uncertainty, an adversary that misleads and protects secrets, and consequences of operations that are substantial. Actions taken affect developments, and decision-making at the national level is difficult to model. Additionally, the events that intelligence analysis must understand and predict are rarely occurring. Together, this creates a challenging information environment in many respects. At the same time, recent technological developments, particularly in artificial intelligence, have raised hopes for using large datasets to improve intelligence analysis. This is often associated with so-called Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), where open or commercially available information is analyzed, but also applies more generally to the various types of data that intelligence services collect. The Department of Defense Systems is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to study the possibilities of using data and systems science methods to improve intelligence analysis. This includes, but is not limited to, various forms of artificial intelligence. The research is applied and may be conducted in collaboration with government agencies and companies, which involves working with practitioners. The Swedish Defence University is making an investment in intelligence and security services within the framework of a newly launched Platform. One development area concerns new technology and large datasets. The postdoctoral work is independent but will be conducted within the framework of the Platform for Intelligence and Security Services and should connect to other ongoing research at the Swedish Defence University, thereby enabling future research applications and education. Duties The postdoctoral researcher is expected to make independent contributions to the research field. Specifically, you are expected to develop methods relevant to intelligence analysis. The work also includes contributing to the research and educational environment in intelligence and security services at the Swedish Defence University. The duties also include dissemination of research results at conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific publications. The work is conducted in close collaboration with other researchers at the Swedish Defence University. Contract research may be included. Administrative tasks and teaching-related tasks will be part of the work, up to 20%. Studying intelligence services presents special challenges due to confidentiality and security protection. However, research within the project should be designed in a way that does not require access to classified information. Who are we looking for? We are looking for you who have: Completed a doctoral degree (or equivalent) by the time of the employment decision in an area relevant to the position, for example data and systems science, data science, or engineering. Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written. It is meritorious if you have: Interest in—and preferably documented experience with—working on the challenges in the information environment that intelligence analysis entails, and who wants to develop methods to address them. An interdisciplinary profile: if you have a doctorate in a technical field, we would like you to also have a basic degree in social sciences or humanities. If you have a doctorate in a social science, intelligence-related field, we would like you to also have a basic degree in a technical or natural science field. Meritorious experiences for this position include: Working with data in areas that have challenges similar to those of intelligence analysis Development of methods for data collection and structuring of quantitative data Data quality Data analysis Use of AI in method development Research in areas relevant to intelligence and security services Working with confidentiality and security protection Publishing peer-reviewed scientific articles Work with intelligence services Applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the employment decision will be prioritized. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been completed earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, service in total defense or similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area. If you are already placed for war deployment in your current employment at an agency and your competence is needed in the Swedish Defence University's war organization, negotiations will take place between the relevant agency and the Swedish Defence University regarding your placement. Start date Start date as soon as possible by agreement. Postdoctoral Researcher with Focus on Design of Management and Collaboration Systems
The Swedish Defence University is an internationally leading academic institution in defense, crisis management, and security. We offer a unique academic environment where the civil and military sectors meet. About the Workplace The position is located at the Institute for Leadership and Management (ILL) in Stockholm. Description of the Research Environment The research environment Leadership and Collaboration for Civil Defense (LedSamCF) at the Swedish Defence University is centered on a research frontier where questions of war leadership, total defense, EU-NATO governance, constitutional preparedness, civil-military collaboration, and social and organizational resilience are central. International research points to the need for adaptive, network-based, and design-oriented ways to lead complex systems, but knowledge is still limited regarding how these principles can be implemented in a civil defense with many independent actors, different legal frameworks, and various technical systems. Against this background, LedSamCF addresses an overarching research question: How can management, collaboration, and other governance be designed, exercised, reviewed, and developed so that civil defense can be implemented effectively and handle simultaneous and overlapping crises and war threats in a legally secure, efficient, and socially sustainable manner? The aim is to build a nationally leading research environment that both develops the scientific knowledge base and delivers concrete solutions for total defense stakeholders. Duties As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily work on research within a theme called "Design of Management and Collaboration Systems" within LedSamCF. The design perspective means that your research aims to develop new or improved solutions or design proposals for current problems and challenges in the field. Together with other researchers in the environment, you will help build up and develop the activities. This involves initiating, planning, and conducting research within the theme in dialogue with the client. This includes planning and conducting data collection, data analysis, writing articles, and presenting and disseminating research results in various ways. You may also contribute to our leadership research conducted on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces. There is an opportunity to work on teaching and supervision up to 20% by agreement. Qualifications Requirements: By the application deadline, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree in a scientific subject assessed as relevant to the position (for example, human-computer interaction, risk and security/crisis management, design science, systems science, psychology, organization, or cognitive science). The applicant's research must be assessed to align with, and contribute to, the current research environment and the institute's research in leadership and management. Advanced knowledge of Swedish and English is required for the position, as it involves extensive contact with various stakeholders in the sector. Experience in designing and conducting research with a design-oriented perspective (what is the problem – a design/solution proposal is developed – evaluation of the design proposal). Applicants must not have previously been employed as a postdoctoral researcher for more than one year in the same or related subject area at the same employer. Meritorious: Experience in research on management and collaboration, including knowledge of decision-making, problem-solving, and the relationship between situational assessment and situational understanding. Experience in designing research with mixed methods and a design-oriented approach. Experience in practice-oriented research in complex security contexts. Publication of articles in highly ranked peer-reviewed journals in, for example, human-computer interaction, risk and security/crisis management, design science, systems science, psychology, organization, or cognitive science. Preferably, you should have completed your degree no more than three years ago. In calculating the three-year period, the last application deadline is the starting point. If there are special circumstances, the degree may have been completed earlier. Special circumstances include, for example, leave due to illness, parental leave, or positions of trust within trade union organizations. Do you not meet all the meritorious qualifications but believe the role suits you? Apply anyway! Personal Qualities To thrive and fit into the role, you should be motivated, organized, and communicative, with a strong ability to take initiative. We expect you to actively participate in the institute's research activities and enjoy collaborating with others. We are also looking for someone who is engaged and present, and who wants to contribute to the Swedish Defence University's professional development, collegial collaborative culture, and social cohesion. It should come naturally to you to share your knowledge and contribute to creating a rewarding and good working environment. Great weight is placed on personal suitability.
