PhD Student in Practical Philosophy in the DEMCAMP Project

About the Education DEMCAMP investigates how applied ethics can contribute to understanding and addressing the vulnerabilities that refugees experience in refugee camps in the Global South. The project develops a normative theory of democracy that can respond to the economic, legal, and political systems that emerge in the camps. Within the project, the doctoral student will write a thesis on the democratization of humanitarian organizations and their role in refugee camps, particularly organizations such as UNHCR. "Democratization of Refugee Camps" (DEMCAMP) is a project funded by the Swedish Foundations' Starting Grant, via the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. The research leader of the project is Felix Bender. DEMCAMP asks what applied ethics has to say about the many refugees who do not live in the Global North but remain in the Global South and, more specifically, in refugee camps. The project investigates how we can understand and adequately respond to the vulnerabilities that refugees experience in camps. The project develops 1) a theory that better captures the vulnerabilities that refugees experience in refugee camps and 2) a normative democratic theory that can address these vulnerabilities. DEMCAMP shows that in refugee camps we can observe the emergence of economic, legal, and political systems that each function according to their own rules and logics, leading to refugees experiencing a set of vulnerabilities that remain invisible if refugee vulnerability is defined externally by humanitarian organizations, such as UNHCR, and only then applied to refugee camps. To adequately respond to the vulnerabilities that refugees experience, refugee camps need to be democratized. Description of the Operations The position is located at the Department of Heat Transfer at the Department of Energy Sciences. The department primarily focuses its research and education on topics related to energy production, conversion, and energy use. This includes both applied subjects such as engines and batteries, and fundamental topics in heat transfer and fluid mechanics. We particularly focus on improving understanding of turbulent reactive flow, multiphase flow, and new fuels. In recent years, we have been involved in several projects in high-speed combustion for civil aviation, and the advertised position is partly based on this work. Approximately 25 colleagues currently work at the department, including 15 PhD students. At the international level, we collaborate with universities and institutes in Europe, Asia, and North America. Subject and Project Description Magnetism was one of the earliest scientific discoveries and remains one of the most technologically significant research areas. The field continues to develop rapidly, and one of the most promising future research directions is investigating materials that exhibit magnetic frustration – a fascinating physical phenomenon where magnetic moments cannot arrange themselves in the most energetically favorable way, forcing the system to make various compromises. Magnetic frustration can give rise to a range of unconventional quantum mechanical ground states with applications in quantum computers, next-generation energy storage devices, and high-temperature superconductivity. The primary research area for this position is investigating frustrated systems leading to partially ordered magnetic ground states, such as the so-called spiral spin liquid. The partial ordering in such systems means that experimental data display both long-range and short-range characteristics. These aspects are, however, rarely analyzed together, meaning that physical understanding often remains incomplete. In this project, you will synthesize materials with new magnetic properties using various methods. Detailed investigations of the materials' structural and magnetic properties will be conducted in both our local laboratories and at large-scale research facilities using neutron-, X-ray-, and muon-based experiments. Additionally, a particular focus will be on developing custom computational codes or adapting existing programs to strengthen our ability to model more complex material systems. The DECENT project aims to investigate how decentralized infrastructure solutions – such as microgrids, small-scale wastewater treatment, multimodal transport, short food supply chains, or distributed finance – overcome the historical legacies of large-scale infrastructure systems and deliver public services in more modular ways. The PhD students will study decentralization from a configurational socio-technical perspective, focusing on aspects such as: local and global industry dynamics, geography of innovation, sustainable transitions, and/or urban experimentation. At the department, we use and develop a wide range of synchrotron, neutron, and lab-based techniques. We are also involved in developing beamlines, experimental stations, experimental techniques, and accelerator systems for the MAX IV laboratory, and we maintain close ties with the European Spallation Source (https://www.ess.eu), a new European neutron facility under construction adjacent to MAX IV. MAX IV is a national large-scale laboratory that is part of Lund University and is located within cycling distance of the Physics Institute. A significant part of this project will be conducted at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, which is Europe's leading research facility for science using neutrons. Subject and Project Description Electron interactions in materials constitute a rich and complex source of physical problems, partly due to the challenges in handling the large number of many-body interactions. These interactions give rise to fundamental quantum mechanical states such as superconductivity and magnetism. New quantum states of matter are discovered regularly. External perturbations can drive a magnetic state into a new phase, which provides important information about the internal exchange interactions. The main research focus of this position is to investigate how heat transport in crystals can be affected by a magnetic field. This is observed in the thermal Hall effect, which is the thermal counterpart to the Hall effect. In many materials, an orthogonal heat gradient arises when a heat gradient is applied and a magnetic field is subsequently applied. The mechanisms behind this are still unknown. In this project, this will be investigated with a focus on thermal carriers, using inelastic neutron scattering to identify and characterize potential carriers, with the aim of explaining how they couple to an external magnetic field. With this information, we will be able to test theoretical explanations and clarify what types of mechanisms are possible in such quantum materials. The project will involve experimental work at large-scale facilities (synchrotron and neutron sources) around the world. Data analysis of the XPCS method will require handling large datasets. Space Lasers for Better Climate Projections Every major volcanic eruption and large-scale forest fire is a natural experiment in climate impact — they inject millions of tons of particles into the stratosphere that shade the planet and temporarily cool the climate. This doctoral project focuses on the stratosphere and, specifically, on understanding how volcanic eruptions and forest fires affect stratospheric aerosol and what this means for climate. Accurately quantifying these effects is crucial for reliable climate projections — and there remains significant potential to better utilize the unique perspective that satellite lidar offers within the multi-instrument climatologies for stratospheric aerosol used in international climate model intercomparisons. A satellite lidar such as CALIOP — fundamentally a laser fired from orbit — offers a fundamentally different and complementary view of stratospheric aerosols compared to other satellite techniques. This project will utilize a unique 17-year dataset from CALIOP to critically evaluate and improve how lidar observations of stratospheric aerosol are currently included in multi-instrument climatologies, and to produce refined lidar-based estimates of stratospheric aerosol burden and its climate impact for use in the next generation of international climate model intercomparisons (CMIP). The goal is to create a richer and more complete picture of how volcanic eruptions and forest fires burden the stratosphere with aerosols and the resulting cooling of Earth's climate. Beyond this primary objective, the project opens toward broader scientific exploration of the stratosphere. The group's research spans multiple aspects of stratospheric composition and its climate relevance, including trace gas measurements that complement aerosol measurements, as well as development of new data products from ATLID — the lidar instrument on ESA's recently launched EarthCARE satellite, which applies a new generation of spaceborne laser remote sensing to stratospheric aerosol research. The Research Project What's Next for Frontier Particle Physics? is a five-year research project conducted at Lund University with Adam Koberinski as the principal investigator (PI). Particle physics is at a crossroads. On one hand, the Standard Model of particle physics has withstood decades of rigorous testing and exhibits some of the most precisely confirmed predictions in the history of science. On the other hand, the Standard Model itself appears to indicate that it should not work as well as it does, and physicists expect the model to be incomplete. This suggests that there is something problematic in our current understanding of the Standard Model – but what? Conceptual questions of this kind are particularly well-suited for philosophy of science analysis. The project constitutes a threefold philosophical investigation of contemporary particle physics aimed at diagnosing the theoretical and experimental challenges facing the Standard Model. The project comprises (1) an in-depth study of the foundations of theoretical particle physics, (2) a comprehensive analysis of how and why particle physics has been so successful over recent decades, and (3) an analysis of particle physics experiments seeking new, yet unknown physics.
