The subject area encompasses basic concepts and principles across different branches of chemistry, such as atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry, and basic inorganic chemistry. The subject is a central part of education for all natural science and technical programs at the Department of Chemistry and provides the foundation for further studies in chemistry and related fields. Special Subject Description General Chemistry involves extensive teaching, and to continue ensuring high quality, there is a clear need to recruit an instructor with documented expertise in this area. Beyond teaching, the role also includes academic advising for students at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Job Responsibilities As a University Lecturer, you will play an important role in developing and delivering instruction in a stimulating and laboratory-based learning environment. The work combines teaching, mentoring, and development of undergraduate education in close collaboration with colleagues and students. The role includes: - Teaching, mentoring, and examining at both basic and advanced levels, and actively contributing to educational delivery through exercise sessions and laboratory instruction - Introducing students to the laboratory environment and the use of course instruments - Supervising doctoral students who teach in undergraduate laboratories - Contributing to the development and delivery of course components, including renewing teaching content and instructional methods - Participating in collegial collaboration and pedagogical development work - Contributing to a safe, inclusive, and professional learning and work environment where students, doctoral researchers, and colleagues are treated fairly, respectfully, and equitably - Contributing to administration related to teaching activities - Participating in safety work related to teaching activities - Helping to ensure that undergraduate laboratories maintain the proper standard through organization, maintenance, cleaning, and quality monitoring of the laboratory environment - Participating in the team's shared responsibility for staffing mornings and late afternoons to ensure the laboratory is always staffed In work tasks involving academic advising, you will: - Introduce, support, and guide students individually and in groups - Conduct individual study planning for students with pedagogical support in consultation with Student Health Services, Study Workshop, and Pedagogical Student Support at LU - Be responsible for ongoing student communications - Represent the department in networks related to academic advising - Participate in outreach activities as a representative of our educational programs - Collaborate with industry and society - Be responsible for study visits and alumni activities The distribution of work tasks within the team may change over time. Qualifications Eligibility To be eligible as a University Lecturer, the following is required: - A completed degree at the advanced level or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way, along with other competencies relevant to the subject orientation of the position and the work tasks involved in the employment - Demonstrated pedagogical skill - Five weeks of higher education pedagogical training or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way, unless there are special reasons not to require this Other Requirements: - Ph.D. in a relevant subject area - Experience teaching at the higher education or university level in chemistry-focused undergraduate courses - Strong laboratory experience - Excellent knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written - Curiosity about pedagogical development and ability to actively contribute to the renewal of course content, teaching methods, and student-centered learning environments - Ability to take responsibility for a safe, inclusive, and ethically sustainable learning environment, particularly in laboratory instruction and interaction with students - Strong pedagogical empathy, meaning good ability to recognize and address individual needs of students and doctoral researchers - Clear student focus - Service-oriented and clear in communication - Strong collaboration skills - Good initiative - Ability to work independently - Organized and thorough Evaluation Criteria For employment as a University Lecturer, the following will serve as the basis for evaluation: - Strong subject knowledge relevant to the position's content and work tasks - Strong pedagogical ability, meaning good ability to conduct and develop teaching and other pedagogical activities at different levels and with varying instructional methods - Extensive professional or other relevant experience Additional Merits: - Experience planning and delivering instruction in a laboratory environment - Experience developing laboratory teaching components - Familiarity with current undergraduate courses offered by the Department of Chemistry is advantageous Consideration will also be given to strong collaboration skills, initiative, independence, and professional judgment, as well as how the applicant, through experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen the department and contribute to its future development.
