PhD Student in Energy Sciences with Focus on Compressible Reactive Flow

Popis:

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading universities. Here there are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our endeavor to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's living conditions. Description of the Operations The position is located at the Department of Heat Transfer at the Department of Energy Sciences. The department primarily focuses its research and education on topics related to energy production, conversion, and energy use. This includes both applied subjects such as engines and batteries, and fundamental topics in heat transfer and fluid mechanics. We particularly focus on improving understanding of turbulent reactive flow, multiphase flow, and new fuels. In recent years, we have been involved in several projects in high-speed combustion for civil aviation, and the advertised position is partly based on this work. Approximately 25 colleagues currently work at the department, including 15 PhD students. At the international level, we collaborate with universities and institutes in Europe, Asia, and North America. We also coordinate two national competence centers, AdTherM and CESTAP, focused on heat transfer in industrial applications and sustainable aviation fuels, respectively. Our facilities are located in the newly renovated M-building on LTH's campus in Lund. More information about the Department of Heat Transfer can be found here. The student will also have close collaboration with the Department of Aviation and Aeronautical Sciences, which is located in Ljungbyhed. This institution is dedicated to promoting safe, efficient, and sustainable aviation through high-quality research and education. The department works closely with industry partners to develop innovative technologies, improve air transportation systems, and prepare future aviation experts. Its focus areas include aviation engineering, aviation operations, flight safety, and environmental sustainability. Project Description The position is part of a project funded by the Swedish Energy Agency. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Energy Sciences, the Department of Aviation and Aeronautical Sciences, and Siemens Energy AB. The project is a feasibility study for biofuels in rotating detonation engines with the goal of designing a laboratory-scale combustion chamber for this purpose, which will eventually be built in our lab. The project will involve one PhD student, one postdoctoral researcher, two senior researchers, and industry partners from Siemens Energy AB. Duties and Responsibilities The main duties of a PhD student are to engage in doctoral research, and therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. You will work on the design of a rotating detonation combustion chamber. Your main responsibility will be to evaluate the design and dimensioning of the combustion chamber and the injector system, but you may also become involved in other aspects of the design. Your work will largely rely on models and simulation tools, both simpler models and 2D/3D computational fluid dynamics. Occasional laboratory work may also be included. You will also travel nationally and internationally to present your work at conferences and to collaborate. The duties include teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of working time. Qualifications Requirements for admission are: a completed degree at advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or by some other means within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. good ability to benefit from doctoral studies. Requirements for employment are: a master's degree in engineering, e.g., mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, technical mathematics, technical physics, aeronautical and astronautical engineering, or similar knowledge of compressible flow, CFD, and CAD very good spoken and written knowledge of English Merits for employment are: priority is given to applicants who obtained their degree at most three years before the application deadline knowledge of detonations or high-speed combustion experience with simulations of compressible and/or reactive flow good analytical and mathematical skills good spoken and written knowledge of Swedish being self-directed, creative, and cooperative is advantageous Great weight will be placed on how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is judged to have the ability required to complete doctoral studies.
