Job Responsibilities Demographic vegetation models are some of our most advanced and promising tools for understanding how the world's forests are likely to change in the future. This position will contribute to the use of such models in two projects funded by the EU research and innovation program Horizon Europe. To be able to rely on the demographic vegetation models' predictions, they need to be thoroughly compared with real-world observations. In the AI4PEX project, we have compiled extensive data to test such models, as well as a set of methods for this evaluation. The employee will conduct analyses in which simulation results from an international ensemble of demographic vegetation models are compared with this data. In the OBSGESSION project, we use the demographic vegetation model LPJ-GUESS to investigate how disturbances, particularly bark beetle attacks, affect Europe's forests. The employee will conduct simulations with LPJ-GUESS and analyze the results. In both projects, the employee will also prepare reports, written documentation, and archive code related to the work, as well as contribute to authoring a peer-reviewed scientific article in the field. The work involves developing analysis code, interpreting model results, and discussions with collaborators around the world. The exact work plan will be established in consultation with the supervisors. The position also includes associated administrative and communication tasks.
