The position involves conducting application-inspired basic research on thin film materials where the main goal is to develop new environmentally friendly surface coating processes with maintained layer quality, functionality and reduced energy consumption. The project is carried out in close collaboration with Swedish industry. Publication in scientific journals and presentations at international conferences are also expected from the successful candidate. The project encompasses process development, plasma analysis, and the synthesis and characterization of thin films. It focuses on controlling and understanding the structure and properties of the coatings at the atomic and nanometer scales. Materials science is inherently interdisciplinary, involving close collaboration with theorists and researchers at other universities in Sweden and abroad. Our close cooperation with industry offers an additional opportunity for those who do not wish to remain in academia after completing their doctoral studies. About you We are looking for someone with a strong interest in experimental thin film physics who can work independently with advanced laboratory equipment. About the Job Organic solar cells (OSCs) are based on semiconducting carbon-based materials that absorb visible light and convert solar energy into electrical energy. Compared to commercial silicon solar cells, organic solar cells have unique advantages. For example, they can be manufactured through inexpensive printing technology (organic semiconductors can be dissolved in organic solvents and thus used as ink), they can be made semi-transparent in various colors, and can be used architecturally by being integrated into buildings, which provides both aesthetic and environmental benefits. OSCs also have a shorter energy payback period compared to other solar cell technologies (the energy needed for the production of OSC devices is repaid after six months of use under typical sunlight conditions in northern Europe). Organic solar cells have traditionally been limited by their relatively low efficiency (approximately 10%). However, the situation has changed significantly in recent years with a recently reported efficiency of over 20%. The main reason for this significant improvement is the application of fullerene-free acceptor materials. Despite the rapid progress in efficiency, little is known about the physics and photophysics of this new type of fullerene-free solar cells. The candidate will focus on understanding generation and recombination, particularly photoluminescence quantum yield, in fullerene-free OSCs, with the goal of paving the way for rational design of donor and acceptor materials for further improved efficiency. The position is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) at Linköping University and is located at the intersection of cybersecurity and AI, with a particular focus on security and privacy for AI-based real-time, networked, and safety-critical systems. Your Responsibilities The research will investigate how AI can be designed, implemented, and used in a secure and reliable manner in environments with high demands for real-time performance, robustness, security, and privacy. You will work on challenges at the intersection of cybersecurity and AI, including security in AI and machine learning systems, adversarial attacks, privacy-preserving machine learning, secure and distributed learning, detection and handling of attacks against AI-based systems, and the robustness of AI systems operating in dynamic environments and resource-constrained environments. The research will also consider the interplay between AI security and the underlying communication and computing infrastructure. Depending on research direction, application areas may include aviation and other critical infrastructure, where networked systems must operate securely and reliably with real-time requirements. Solid research experience in cybersecurity, particularly in communication network security, distributed systems, real-time systems, or critical infrastructure, is therefore highly relevant for the position. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily conduct research. Teaching may also be part of your responsibilities, but limited to at most one-fifth of your working time.
