Subject Description The subject area for this position is zoo ecology with a focus on plant-animal interactions in temperate and boreal forest ecosystems within the application areas of forestry, wildlife management, and forest damage. The subject develops the knowledge base about animal ecology and their interactions with humans, landscape, and climate. Responsibilities The incumbent shall be responsible for developing research within the field of zoo ecology, generally and specifically within the subject focus area, in collaboration with other researchers in the faculty and university. The incumbent shall also contribute to pedagogical development within the field. Postdoctoral Fellow in Gender Studies with Educational Science Focus
Position Responsibilities The postdoctoral fellow will conduct independent research in gender studies with an educational science focus on the theme: Youth, Violence, and Gender in Schools. Schools play a central role in efforts to promote safety, democratic values, and gender equality. Issues of violence in young people's close relationships, honor-related violence, youth perpetration of violence, and recruitment into criminal environments underscore schools' responsibility as learning environments and social arenas. Against the backdrop of increasing polarization and the report Schools Against Crime (SOU 2024:14), we aim to strengthen research on violence, safety, and gender in school environments. Research might address, for example, how issues of violence, safety, and vulnerability are shaped in relation to norms, gender relations, and schools' values-based work. Critical perspectives on norm-criticism, safety, and inclusion in school environments are also relevant within the scope of this call's theme. The research must be described by the applicant in a research plan submitted with the application for the position. As a postdoctoral fellow, you are also expected to contribute to the unit's shared research environment and to participate in and support a pedagogical environment. Teaching and supervision at the undergraduate and advanced levels, and possibly doctoral level, as well as certain other research-related administrative tasks may comprise up to 20% of your working time. Postdoctoral Researcher in Human Interaction with Humanoid Unitree G1

The Department of Computing Science is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the project "Human Interaction with the Humanoid Unitree G1" within WASP, led by Lecturer Zoe Falomir. The position is full-time for two years with a planned start in autumn 2026, or by agreement. Project Description and Work Tasks This project proposes the implementation of a cognitive agent in a humanoid robot that collaborates with a human partner to solve a spatial problem (e.g. 3D puzzle). Tasks: The following shall be performed: (i) scene understanding: detection of objects and relationships between objects, and use of these relationships to draw conclusions about new knowledge (i.e. reasoning); (ii) explore the affordances of objects, learn the consequences of performed actions and enrich the knowledge base (i.e. learning through interaction); (iii) use previous experiences to predict actions that may be useful in the present, test them and update the knowledge base (i.e. learning updates). Also writing scientific papers and communicating our research progress at conferences. Methods: Programming of a humanoid platform using ROS2 packages, using SLAM, using imitation learning algorithms to learn pick-and-place tasks, designing HRI experiments with users, evaluating data and sharing code and benchmarks in open repositories. This postdoctoral position is funded by Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). WASP is Sweden's largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and recruitment of teachers. This eligibility requirement must be met by the time of the employment decision. PhD Student in Mathematics with Focus on Combinatorics, Group Theory, and Geometry
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is announcing a fully funded PhD position in mathematics with a focus on combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. The position comprises four years of doctoral education including participation in research projects and doctoral courses. The application deadline is July 18, 2026. Project Description and Responsibilities The PhD student will conduct theoretical research at the intersection of combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. We will investigate questions about rigidity and motion in non-classical geometries using combinatorial, algebraic, and group-theoretic methods, inspired by the mathematical theory of articulated systems and constraint geometry. Possible tools include combinatorics, algebraic methods, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, and rigidity theory, depending on the selected PhD student's background and interests. The project's exact direction will be developed together with the selected PhD student, who will have significant freedom to influence the research within the project's overarching mathematical framework. The selected PhD student will become part of an active research environment in discrete mathematics, geometry, and group theory at Umeå University, with opportunities to interact with researchers active in combinatorics, geometry, group theory, and related areas. The project is integrated into an international network of research collaborations and offers opportunities for conference travel, research visits, and scientific exchange. Qualifications The PhD student will be admitted to doctoral studies in mathematics. Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed a degree at advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. To meet the requirement for special eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in mathematics, the applicant must have at least 60 hp within the field of mathematics, of which at least 15 hp at advanced level. The requirements for prior knowledge stated above are also considered met by those who in another manner acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. Good ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, is required. Experience in combinatorics, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, algebraic methods, and/or rigidity theory is meriting but not required for the position. As a PhD student, you are expected to take an active role in the project and in the department's activities. You are expected to have a scientific approach and good collaboration skills while being able to work independently. You should have a strong drive to continuously develop your knowledge and to develop into an independent researcher. Professor in Environmental Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry is now seeking a professor in environmental chemistry who can bring new expertise, new methods and new perspectives, and who complements and strengthens the existing research environment. The position of professor is permanent and should be filled by June 2027 (or by agreement). A generous start-up package is included. Background Environmental Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry is an internationally recognized research environment with both fundamental and applied research. Research areas include anthropogenic organic and organometallic contaminants, sustainable chemicals and techniques to reduce environmental impact. The professor is expected to develop research and teaching in line with international development of the field as well as in response to societal needs.
