PhD Candidate in Computer Engineering with Focus on Wireless Communication
Do you want to contribute to how future autonomous environments communicate? Mid Sweden University is seeking two PhD candidates for VINES — a 6G collaboration between Sweden and USA funded by Vinnova, VR, and NSF. You will become part of a leading Scandinavian research group in wireless communication and work at the intersection of 6G, deterministic networks, and industrial automation. Smart manufacturing and collaborative robotics require networks that are both fast and predictably reliable. VINES makes converged 5G/6G and TSN systems robust end-to-end based on real industrial challenges. The research combines ML-based prediction, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), and deterministic scheduling to prevent production disruptions. These fully funded four-year positions include a research visit at University of Connecticut or University of Iowa, preparing you for a world-class R&D career in academia or industry. Responsibilities As a PhD candidate, your main task is to conduct research and doctoral studies. The positions encompass 100% research in theoretical modeling, algorithm development, simulation, and experimental evaluation. You collaborate with the team on system-level solutions, joint publications, and international conferences. Research Profile 1: Predictive wireless resilience and perception-driven deterministic scheduling Focus on dynamic industrial environments: channel-aware proactive resource management, risk-sensitive disruption prediction, ISAC-based environment awareness, and adaptive feedback to maintain URLLC performance under changing conditions. Research Profile 2: Cross-domain deterministic scheduling and end-to-end resource management Focus on converged wireless and TSN infrastructures: cross-domain scheduling, hierarchical resource partitioning, resource reservation, runtime verification, and local reconfiguration to guarantee low latency, jitter, and high reliability. Qualifications Basic eligibility for doctoral-level education requires a degree at advanced level, completion of course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits with at least 60 at advanced level, or equivalent knowledge acquired within or outside the country. Special eligibility requires at least 90 higher education credits in Computer Engineering or equivalent knowledge acquired within or outside the country. A degree as Certified Engineer or Master's degree in wireless communication, electrical engineering, signal processing, computer engineering, engineering physics, or a related field provides suitable background for these positions. Selection Criteria Selection is based on academic merits, thesis work, research experience, programming skills, and interview. Very good knowledge of English in speech and writing is required, as well as good simulation and programming skills (C/C++, Python, MATLAB, or equivalent). Profile 1 (Wireless Resilience): Desirable background in wireless communication, radio resource management, optimization, signal processing, or ML. Experience with 5G/6G, URLLC, ISAC, or adaptive resource allocation is particularly meritorious. Profile 2 (Deterministic Networks): Desirable background in computer networks, real-time networks, deterministic networks, scheduling, or distributed systems. Experience with TSN, network calculus, wireless/TSN convergence, or resource orchestration is particularly meritorious. Personal Qualities We seek candidates who collaborate well in international projects with multiple partners. You are driven, take own initiative, and can work independently while contributing to the project's common goals. A structured work approach, analytical problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills are important for effective collaboration with both academic and industrial partners. Other Selection Criteria Very good knowledge of English in speech and writing is required to communicate effectively in an international research environment. Good programming and simulation skills relevant to network or wireless modeling are required. Since the project involves close international collaboration, candidates must be prepared and able to undertake international travel and research visits (including to the USA). Processing Processing of the employment follows the procedures specified in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance and continues in accordance with Mid Sweden University's employment regulations. Employment and Start Date The PhD position constitutes employment equivalent to four years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a doctoral degree. Start date 2026-11-01 or by agreement. A new PhD position is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. Provisions regarding PhD employment are found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7. Place of Employment: Sundsvall Salary: According to Mid Sweden University's salary scale for PhD candidates. Information For further information about the research positions, please contact Prof. Mikael Gidlund ([email protected]) or Associate Prof. Aamir Mahmood ([email protected]). For questions regarding the department, contact Patrik Österberg, Head of Department ([email protected]). Application Application documents should be in Swedish or English. The application must include a certified CV, copies of official grades and diplomas, a brief description of the applicant's research interests and motivation for doctoral studies, and other documents the applicant wishes to submit. Applicants should clearly indicate whether they are primarily interested in Research Profile 1, Research Profile 2, or both. Welcome to submit your application via our recruitment system no later than 2026-09-30.
PhD Student in Engineering Physics
We conduct research and education in physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, technical design, engineering physics, and subject didactics in mathematics and natural sciences. Here you will find unique and world-leading research within the center formations FSCN Research Centre and Sports Tech Research Centre. At the research center Fibre Science and Communication Network (FSCN), research is conducted on advanced materials and process technology. The work is interdisciplinary and aims to develop resource-efficient processes and improve the functionality of bio-based materials and energy materials. Work Tasks The employment concerns own doctoral education, with research up to 100%. Teaching and administrative work may be included with a maximum of 20%. The current doctoral studies will be conducted within a project focused on the development of aluminum-based batteries, with focus on the electrolyte, positive electrode, and negative electrode. To advance the technology, a fundamental scientific understanding of these key components is required. A central goal is therefore to investigate the mechanisms for energy storage in aluminum batteries under varying operating conditions. As a PhD student, you conduct independent research under the guidance of your supervisors. The work tasks include mainly synthesis and characterization of battery materials, electrochemical evaluation, data analysis, and theoretical analysis. You will also collaborate with the project's national and international partners, conduct courses at the doctoral level, present research results at international conferences and research seminars, and publish the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Qualifications Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed a degree at an advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits with at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or in another way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.
