PhD Candidate in Medical Imaging of Pelvic Floor Injuries During Childbirth

Project Description Doctoral Program: Engineering and Health We are seeking a motivated individual with a strong interest in biomedical engineering development and research who wants to contribute to advancing future diagnostics and treatment in women's health. You will work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment at KTH's Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems, where engineers, clinicians, and researchers collaborate to solve important medical challenges. In this project, you will work closely with clinical partners at Karolinska University Hospital and leading international researchers in medical image analysis and biomechanical simulation. Our research focuses on biomechanical imaging and modeling to improve diagnostics, treatment, and prevention of various types of injuries and diseases. In this project, we are developing new technologies to improve diagnostics, prevention, and rehabilitation of childbirth-related injuries to women's pelvic floor musculature, an area that has long been understudied despite affecting millions of women worldwide. The project combines advanced medical imaging, including ultrasound, MRI, and elastography, with image analysis, image registration, and personalized simulation models of the pelvic floor. The goal is to increase understanding of injury mechanisms, identify risk factors, and enable future patient-specific treatment strategies. The project is funded by InspireLab, KTH's initiative for research and innovation to increase gender equality in society. Project Description Doctoral Field: Physics, specialization in Nuclear Energy Engineering The Nuclear Power Safety Group of the Division of Nuclear Science and Engineering researches accident phenomena that are essential for risk assessment of current and future nuclear reactors. The group also performs safety analysis for nuclear power plants, including analysis of design-basis accidents and severe accidents. The research projects involve extensive international collaboration. We are seeking a PhD student to conduct cutting-edge research on severe accident management in light water reactors. The PhD project is supported by funding from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM). The work involves (i) digitizing the paper-based, table-lookup-like procedures in selected Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMG), which facilitates the implementation of SAMG during severe accidents; (ii) developing an AI-supported tool for diagnosing plant damage using measured and estimated data (e.g., simulation results from US NRC codes); and (iii) combining the digitalized SAMG with the AI-supported tool for effective accident management. Project Description Graduate Research Subject: Electrical and Systems Engineering The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) and addresses fundamental questions in quantum information science, with applications in quantum communication, quantum computing, and other forms of quantum information processing. The overarching goal is to establish the ultimate limits on what resources are required and what performance can be achieved in such tasks, as well as to develop explicit protocols that achieve or approach these limits. A central challenge is to express these limits in mathematically tractable and computationally accessible forms. PhD Student in Characterization of Electrochemical Interfaces

Project Description Doctoral Field: Chemistry This PhD project investigates the behavior of electrolytes in nanoporous electrodes, with particular emphasis on how pore size, morphology, and surface chemistry govern ion trapping and charge storage. A central goal is to distinguish and quantify the contributions from ions inside the pores versus ions outside the pores, to provide molecular insight into ion–electrode interactions. The project focuses on ionic liquid electrolytes as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems. You will study ion transport during charging and discharging in batteries and supercapacitors using advanced NMR methods, complemented by targeted computational modeling. This integrated approach enables identification of the dominant ion transport mechanisms in carbon-based electrodes and supports the development of robust structure–property relationships for high-performance electrochemical components. Project Description Research Education Subject: Engineering Mechanics FLOW is a strong research environment with researchers conducting both basic and applied research in fluid mechanics at the Department of Engineering Mechanics. We are seeking a PhD student with an experimental focus in fluid mechanics for the Fluids and Surfaces group within FLOW. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated candidate to contribute to a cutting-edge research project, funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The project aims to increase understanding of how complex films, including biological and living films, interact with surrounding fluid flows. Such films occur extensively both in nature and in technical applications, from mucus in the lungs to biofilms on medical devices and ship hulls. When exposed to shear and potentially time-varying flows, the films can deform into complex shapes, exhibit unusual material properties, and evolve over time. Thus, they constitute a dynamic and continuously changing boundary for the flow. Simultaneously, the films affect the overlying flow and can alter both friction drag and transport and exchange of various substances. Despite their significance, the coupled interaction between complex films and fluid flows remains poorly understood. This limits our ability to predict and control these systems and presents significant challenges in medical, industrial, and geophysical applications. In this project, the PhD student will work with and further develop a unique experimental platform for studying complex films under controlled yet complex flow conditions. The experimental work will be complemented with continuum modeling of complex materials, data-driven methods, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In terms of cost and power output, the electrode is a critical component that must meet high requirements for electrical conductivity, large active surface area, electrocatalytic activity, and chemical and mechanical stability. To enable continued electrode development, more research is needed to understand the relationship between electrode surface properties and battery power output. This project aims to create fundamental and technical understanding of electrodes in flow batteries by combining innovative surface treatment of electrodes with two-dimensional transition metal carbides at KTH with the development of carbon fiber nanostructures at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Simultaneously, dietary habits are a critical factor for human health and environmental sustainability. The transition to sustainable food systems requires addressing complex challenges within physical and communication infrastructure as well as individual behavior, social norms, and policy frameworks. We are seeking postdoctoral researchers with a strong background in and interest for network-based control systems, mathematics, machine learning, and applications in food systems. Project Description The dissertation work will be conducted within the framework of the ERC-funded project "Social Inequalities in Bereavement: From Demographic Rates to Lived Experience (DEM-LOSS)," led by Professor Isaac Sasson. The loss of family members is a universal human experience that profoundly affects social and psychological well-being. Declining mortality in high-income countries has made this experience more predictable across the life course, but there is considerable variation between social and socioeconomic groups in when and to what extent individuals lose family members. The DEM-LOSS project aims to establish the demographic and social determinants of this type of loss across the life course, to document social differences within and between countries, and to understand how this in turn shapes how individuals feel, think, and act. The study is conducted at multiple sites, including Tel Aviv University and Stockholm University. The study will examine the loss of family members across several social and national contexts, including Sweden, Israel, and other countries. Responsibilities At the Hultgren Laboratory at the Department of Materials Science, we are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with research interests in microstructural characterization of sustainable metallic materials using transmission electron microscopy and complementary methods. Through a generous grant from the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability – WISE (https://wise-materials.org/) and KTH, we are now establishing a state-of-the-art high-capacity scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) with unique in-situ/operando capabilities at the Hultgren Laboratory. The equipment brings unique capacity to Swedish transmission electron microscopy infrastructure (https://artemi.se/) with an integrated laser heating system, enabling high-temperature studies and in-situ investigations of thermomechanical processing using an in-situ straining holder. It will also be possible to combine other types of in-situ holders, such as reaction chambers, in combination with the laser heating. The system will also be equipped with Automated Crystallographic Orientation Mapping (ACOM), which enables unique high-resolution and high-capacity local crystallographic and strain analysis. The postdoctoral researcher will join our research team in materials characterization to conduct research with the goal of improving material sustainability. By contributing improved fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationships in metallic materials through advanced characterization, we support the development of new metallic materials and their manufacturing processes. Job Responsibilities We are seeking postdoctoral researchers who can contribute to several projects related to thermohydraulics and safety of small modular reactors (SMR). The work will involve analysis to support the design and development of large-scale experimental facilities to be built and operated at KTH and Oskarshamn. Various facilities will be designed to address important thermohydraulic phenomena relevant to both water-cooled and lead-cooled SMRs. The work will be part of national projects supported by the Swedish Energy Agency and has strong connections to collaborative projects in Europe.
