Postdoctoral Fellow: Psychology, Forest Management, and Biological Diversity

Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology We are seeking an engaged and motivated postdoctoral researcher who wishes to participate in an interdisciplinary research collaboration between the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå University, and University of Massachusetts. As Sweden and the EU work toward ambitious goals for biological diversity and ecosystem restoration, understanding the human dimensions of forest management becomes increasingly important. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to research at the intersection of psychology, economics, and forestry, with the aim of supporting decision-making for more resilient and sustainable forest landscapes. The full job announcement can be found at: https://www.slu.se/om-slu/jobba-pa-slu/lediga-jobb/ About the position The EU's Nature Restoration Regulation and Sweden's environmental quality objectives place increasing demands for landscapes with greater biological diversity. In Sweden, approximately 300,000 individuals and families own about 50 percent of productive forest land, which covers roughly two-thirds of the country's area. These family forest owners will need to implement a large portion of the measures required to strengthen biological diversity in Sweden's forests. Within the framework of an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, we are investigating three central research questions: What prominent elements in family forest owners' cognitive models describe their perceptions of and assessment strategies regarding biological diversity in their own forest holdings? Do family forest owners have the ability, opportunities, and motivation to change their behavior toward forest management practices that enhance biological diversity? Can interventions offering economic compensation promote family forest owners' transition to forest management practices that enhance biological diversity? To address these questions, we are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who wishes to work with researchers in applied economics, psychology, and forest science. The selected candidate will contribute to integrating behavioral science perspectives and knowledge of natural resource management into relevant research designs, developing research questions, applying appropriate analytical methods, and writing scientific publications. The position is a full-time appointment for two years. An important task is to develop interview protocols for studies with family forest owners, support data collection, and lead analyses of the collected data. The position is based at SLU campus in Umeå. Your background Applicants must hold a doctoral degree obtained within the past three years in a relevant field, such as applied economics, cognitive science, psychology, or a strong interdisciplinary program. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, military service, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments for the field. Applicants are expected to have excellent ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, and a clear motivation to pursue an academic career. The ability to work independently, take own initiatives, and collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary and international research environments is of great importance. Advantageous qualifications include documented ability to integrate behavioral science perspectives in research on decision-making, experience writing scientific manuscripts, and advanced and documented knowledge in R, Stata, or equivalent analytical software for statistical modeling. Good knowledge of Swedish and experience using surveys and/or interviews as data collection methods are also advantageous. About us The Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology at SLU brings together broad expertise in engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences. About Us The Department of Law at Umeå University is expanding and currently has over 65 employees. The department is responsible for education in the Law Program, several other educational programs, and a large number of standalone courses. At the Department of Law, 13 doctoral students work on research and teaching. For more information about our activities, see our website: Department of Law. Description The serious security situation has not only led to the Swedish military defense being rebuilt at a rapid pace, but the same applies to civil defense. One aspect of rebuilding civil defense is to ensure supply preparedness. To be able to secure the supply of all kinds of goods, services, and construction contracts in connection with crisis, heightened alert, and war, well-developed cooperation between public and private actors is required. At the same time, such collaborations must be designed so that they comply with, among other things, public procurement legislation and EU state aid law. The Department of Law is now seeking a doctoral student who, as part of a project co-funded by the Swedish Competition Authority, wishes to develop a doctoral project with a focus on the overarching theme of effective civil preparedness from a broader competition perspective. Education at the research level corresponds to four years of full-time studies (240 credits). A person employed as a doctoral student also participates in undergraduate education or other departmental activities up to 20% of working time. In such cases, the doctoral student employment is extended accordingly so that four years of full-time studies in research level education is guaranteed. For more information about the content of doctoral education in Legal Science, see the general study plan. You can read more about what it means to be a doctoral student at Umeå University: Research Level Education. Eligibility Requirements and Assessment Criteria Basic eligibility to be admitted to research level education is held by those who have completed a degree at the advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at the advanced level. To meet the requirement of special eligibility for admission to research level education in Legal Science, the applicant must have completed law education and earned a law degree/juris candidate degree or equivalent. An application can be supplemented with diploma documentation after the final application deadline. Special eligibility is also held by those who can claim other completed education or special professional experience, if the education or professional experience is deemed to provide competence in the subject of research level education that is equivalent to a law degree/juris candidate degree with respect to both knowledge in the subject of research level education and general legal knowledge of relevance to the same subject. Those who before July 1, 2007 have higher education of 120 credits (equivalent to 180 credits) and meet the special eligibility requirement are also considered to have eligibility for admission to research level education. Eligible applicants are assessed based on their ability to benefit from doctoral education. The assessment of an applicant's ability to benefit from doctoral education is based partly on their general competence based on educational background, the quality of independent work and other relevant merits, and partly on the scientific quality of the research plan. Application You apply via the e-recruitment system Varbi and your application must be submitted by September 15, 2026. Your application should consist of: a brief description of why you are interested in and suited for the position, a research plan within the overarching theme of effective civil preparedness from a broader competition perspective (further information about what a research plan should contain can be found here), CV/resume, transcript of grades from higher education studies, master's thesis and any other publications you wish to reference. Further information about doctoral student employment and the structure of the education is provided by the research education coordinator Lena Enqvist, 090-7869979, [email protected] Salary is set in accordance with the established salary scale for doctoral student positions.
