The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is announcing a fully funded PhD position in mathematics with a focus on combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. Project Description and Responsibilities The PhD student will conduct theoretical research at the intersection of combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. We will investigate questions about rigidity and motion in non-classical geometries using combinatorial, algebraic, and group-theoretic methods, inspired by the mathematical theory of articulated systems and constraint geometry. Possible tools include combinatorics, algebraic methods, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, and rigidity theory, depending on the selected PhD student's background and interests. The project's exact direction will be developed together with the selected PhD student, who will have significant freedom to influence the research within the project's overarching mathematical framework. Qualifications The PhD student will be admitted to doctoral studies in mathematics. Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed a degree at advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. To meet the requirement for special eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in mathematics, the applicant must have at least 60 hp within the field of mathematics, of which at least 15 hp at advanced level. Duties The postdoctoral researcher will work on a project funded by the Swedish Space Agency, with the primary aims of creating a new mapping of bedrock topography and ice thickness for the Greenland ice sheet, and simulating the ice sheet's development through 2300. To achieve this, a new inverse modeling-based method will be used that reconstructs the bedrock topography beneath the ice, while also providing a starting point for predictive modeling. Following recent applications on plateaus and valley glaciers in the Arctic and subarctic (see, for example, Frank and Van Pelt, 2024; Van Pelt and Frank, 2025), and an application to all valley glaciers on Earth (Frank et al. 2026), the method will be optimized in this project for use on the Greenland ice sheet, while utilizing the latest high-resolution satellite data products. Ice flow modeling will be conducted using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM), though machine learning alternatives such as the Instructed Glacier Model (IGM) will also be considered. The project will involve close collaboration with a doctoral student in the same research group at Uppsala University as well as collaboration with international colleagues at Oslo University, Mid Sweden University, the Danish Meteorological Institute, University of Liège, University of Fairbanks, and University of Lausanne. The position includes 20% teaching at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, in earth science (physical geography/hydrology) at undergraduate and advanced levels. Responsibilities The project focuses on the discovery and development of new halide-based solid electrolytes for use in all-solid-state batteries. Halide-based solid electrolytes are a promising materials class due to their high lithium-ion conductivity and potential compatibility with high-voltage cathode materials. However, their practical application is often limited by insufficient chemical and electrochemical stability at the interface between the negative electrode and the electrolyte. The overall goal of the project is to develop a fundamental understanding of the origin of these stability limitations and to use this knowledge to guide the design of new halide-based compositions that combine high lithium-ion conductivity with improved chemical and electrochemical stability. A central objective is to establish relationships between composition, structure, ion transport properties, and stability. The work will include synthesis of new solid electrolytes and investigation of the mechanisms governing their degradation and boundary reactions with battery electrode materials. Based on this understanding, new compositions and material design strategies will be explored to overcome the existing trade-off between high ion conductivity and stability. The research will thus combine material synthesis, structural and electrochemical characterization, and electrochemical testing in battery cells. The primary responsibilities are to conduct research. The position may also include teaching up to 20% of working time, as well as supervision of and collaboration with doctoral and master's students. Qualifications A doctoral degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. The instrument performs quantitative chemical analyses at a micrometer scale and imaging of minerals or materials down to a nanometer scale. Quantitative analyses of elements are possible in the range from beryllium to uranium. Job Responsibilities The research assistant will be responsible for operation and maintenance of the FE-EPMA and general management of the laboratory. In addition to routine operation and customer service, responsibilities will also include development and implementation of new micro-analytical methods such as in-situ chemical dating, trace element-based geothermobarometry, and basic analysis of volatile elements (depending on demand). Responsibilities will also include assisting students using the EMPA and training related to the role focus. Qualification Requirements Master's degree in mineralogy and/or petrology. Experience with Field Emission Electron MicroProbe and conventional electron microprobe is required. Lignin, a renewable by-product from the pulp and paper industry, is converted into highly porous biochar that concentrates PFAS from contaminated water. Enzyme immobilization on the biochar surface extends enzyme lifespan, improves substrate accessibility, and creates a synergistic system where adsorption brings PFAS into close contact with the enzyme's active sites. The research proceeds through three coordinated work packages: (WP1) screening of extracellular enzymes for PFAS transformation using real contaminated groundwater; (WP2) development and validation of biochar-enzyme composites; and (WP3) pilot-scale testing in lysimeter systems with contaminated water and soil from former fire training sites. The PhD student will work under the main supervision of Assistant Professor Tetyana Budnyak and co-supervision of Professor Fritjof Fagerlund. The project is funded by a Tuffo grant, with co-financing from Uppsala University. The research subject for your doctoral studies is environmental analysis. The project will involve close collaboration with industry partners and other relevant actors, as well as with academic research groups in Sweden and internationally, which gives the PhD student the opportunity to work in a broad, interdisciplinary, and collaboration-oriented research environment. Duties The main task of a PhD student is to pursue doctoral research training, which includes both participation in research projects and research training courses. The duties may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of working time. The duties will include synthesis and characterization of lignin-based biochar materials, screening and immobilization of enzymes, and evaluation of PFAS adsorption and degradation performance in laboratory column experiments and pilot-scale lysimeter systems with real PFAS-contaminated soil and groundwater. PhD Student in Vascular Biology The Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) is part of the Medical and Pharmacy Science area at Uppsala University and has approximately 160 employees and around 230 registered doctoral students, many of whom are clinically active physicians and nurses. The doctoral student will work on a project focused on the treatment and understanding of the mechanisms behind abdominal aortic aneurysm. The current project is translational and is conducted in close collaboration with Professor Dick Wågsäter's research group in vascular biology. Methods used include animal models of vascular disease, cell cultures from both mice and humans, immunostaining of tissue, and molecular biological methods and genetic analyses. The project will primarily focus on further deepening the understanding of some of the new mechanisms the research group has discovered. The project will combine work with methods in biomedical laboratory science, immune cell analysis, in vitro and in vivo work, as well as work with large datasets from proteomics and RNA sequencing data. The applicant is further expected to actively participate in teaching and mentoring of students corresponding to a maximum of 20% of full-time work. Qualification Requirements Eligible for admission to doctoral-level education is someone who has completed a degree at the advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 university credits, of which at least 60 university credits at the advanced level, or who has otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge domestically or abroad. For this position, it is required that you have a 3-year basic degree in biomedical analyst education and master's-level education corresponding to 60 university credits at the advanced level in a relevant field (biomedical laboratory science, medicine, biomedicine, pharmacy, medical science, or equivalent). We are looking for a motivated candidate with an interest in biomedical laboratory science, immunometabolism, and physiology. Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills such as communication and collaboration abilities. Applicants must have good knowledge of English and Swedish in speech and writing. You are expected to be able to work independently but also collaborate with other group members. Applicants should have experience with basic methods in biomedical laboratory science, physiology, and immunology such as sample handling and collection, immune cell isolation, bioinformatics, microscopy, cell culture, histology, and cell and molecular biological methods. Meritorious/Desirable Qualifications Documented work with laboratory animals is meritorious. Experience with bioinformatics, large datasets (e.g., RNAseq or proteomics), various imaging methods, as well as documented teaching experience is desirable but not required. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability.
