Assistant Professor in Media and Communication Studies
at the Department of Informatics and Media and the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies
The Department of Informatics and Media (IM) brings together researchers in three subject areas: media and communication studies, information systems, and human-computer interaction.
The research profile in media and communication studies is broad and encompasses questions related to digitalization, discourse studies, the role of media in society, and organizational communication. The Department also has extensive teaching responsibilities in degree programs and individual courses within the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (IRES) is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. IRES has a widely recognized, integrated multidisciplinary long-term research program with deep focus on recent developments in Russia and the broader post-Soviet sphere. We also analyze more specific themes such as security and insecurity, decolonization, illiberalism, resource conflicts, and the interaction between humans and nature.
Employment Period
Employment as Assistant Professor can be held for a maximum of four years with the possibility of promotion to Associate Professor. An employee hired as Assistant Professor shall, after written application, be promoted to Associate Professor if, following expert review, they are deemed to meet the qualification requirements established by the respective subject or faculty board and as stated in the information about the vacant position. Additional criteria for promotion to Associate Professor are found in Uppsala University's Employment Regulations and the Faculty of Social Sciences' supplementary guidelines (section 2f).
Duties
Research and teaching in Media and Communication Studies with focus on Russia and Eurasia. Teaching includes course responsibility, supervision, and course administration. The position may also include administrative tasks. The teaching component amounts to a maximum of 50 percent.
Qualifications
Eligible for employment as Assistant Professor is a person who holds a doctoral degree or has attained equivalent scientific competence and meets the requirements for teaching aptitude. Applicants who hold a doctoral degree or have attained equivalent competence no more than five years before the application deadline are particularly encouraged to apply. Furthermore, the applicant must meet the requirements prescribed in Uppsala University's Employment Regulations (§ 39) and the Faculty of Social Sciences' guidelines (section 2 e).
Teaching aptitude, scientific competence, and professional skills must be relevant to the subject matter of the position and the duties included in the employment.
According to Uppsala University's Employment Regulations, a general qualification requirement for teachers is that the applicant must have the ability to collaborate and otherwise meet the suitability requirements necessary to perform the position well.
For eligibility, documented ability to teach in Swedish and English is required. An applicant who at the start of employment only masters one of these languages must, within two years, be able to teach in the other language as well. It is also a requirement that the applicant can use as a working language one of the languages of the post-Soviet region.
