Postdoctoral Researcher in Strong Convection and Large-Scale Atmospheric Dynamics
The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education spanning the atmosphere, ocean, and physically-based climate science. We offer educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and oceans that are relevant to weather and climate. Research activities are broad and encompass processes ranging from the deep ocean to the upper atmosphere, and from the tropics to the poles. We utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interaction with observations. Additionally, the department develops and leads observation-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments. MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, including the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Baltic Sea Centre, and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department is an international workplace, and more than half of the staff have backgrounds outside Sweden. More information about us can be found at www.su.se/department-of-meteorology. Project Description This research project investigates the bidirectional interactions between strong convection and large-scale atmospheric circulation. While synoptic flow patterns create environments that favor extensive strong convection, there is growing evidence that the latent heating associated with organized convection can in turn modify upper tropospheric flows and thereby affect the downstream development of the jet stream and the dynamics of Rossby waves. These feedback mechanisms may contribute to the emergence and persistence of weather events with significant societal consequences, such as atmospheric blocking and heat waves. Using targeted numerical experiments with the ICON model, the postdoctoral researcher will identify the causal mechanisms linking convection and large-scale circulation, and quantify the strength of these interactions. The project will also evaluate the importance of convection-scale feedbacks for global climate simulations and for the predictability of medium-range weather and seasonal forecasting. The project combines convection-permitting and large-scale numerical modeling, dynamical diagnostic methods, Lagrangian analysis, and statistical attribution to investigate atmospheric interactions across multiple scales. Simulations will be conducted on high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. Post-processing and analysis of model data will be primarily conducted in Python. Responsibilities Responsibilities include performing numerical simulations using ICON, processing and analyzing large atmospheric datasets using HPC, and developing and implementing analysis workflows for model results. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, present research results at international conferences and workshops, and mentor and support bachelor's and master's level students in their thesis work. Eligibility Requirements To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a relevant doctoral degree. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Selection Criteria The doctoral degree should be completed in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, or another relevant field. It is a merit if the doctoral degree or equivalent was completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are particular reasons, an earlier completed degree can also be considered a merit. Particular reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, military service, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or relevant practice/assignments for the field. Special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence within the field of employment. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate very good ability to express themselves orally and in writing in English, ability to work independently and take own initiative, and good collaboration skills. About the Position The position is full-time and is permanent, but for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are particular reasons. Start date January 1, 2027, or by agreement. The start date can be brought forward but not delayed. Stockholm University is committed to being a workplace free from discrimination and providing equal rights and opportunities for all. Contact Information about the position is provided by Assistant Lecturer Monika Feldmann, [email protected]. Information about the recruitment process and employment conditions is provided by Administrative Director Sara Engström, [email protected]. Application You apply for the position via Stockholm University's recruitment system. Attach a cover letter and CV as well as any attachments requested in the application form. As an applicant, you are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete and submitted to the university by the application deadline. Instructions for applicants can be found on the webpage: how to apply for a position. Stockholm University contributes to the development of a sustainable democratic society through knowledge, enlightenment, and the pursuit of truth.
